"Über den Ausgang des Heiligen Geistes": Eine Schrift eines anonymen Russen als Beilage im Brief von Simon Budny an Heinrich Bullinger vom 18. April 1563
Simon Budny (ca. 1530–1591) was a Reformed pastor who became a wellknown leader of the Anti-Trinitarian movement in Lithuania. In 1563, Budny wrote a letter to Heinrich Bullinger asking for his opinion on the filioque, which was the object of intense discussion in Lithuania. Budny enclosed a small work written by an anonymous Russian Orthodox author titled De processione Spiritus sancti that contains the main exegetical and theological arguments against the filioque (Zurich Staatsarchiv, E II 367, 231–242). This contribution includes an historical introduction, an edition, a German translation, and a text analysis. I propose that the anonymous author of this text may be the famous Russian theologian Maksim Grek (1470–1556) or one of his students, because the language, the content, the argumentation, the Biblical and Patristic proofs are similar to his Anti-Roman-Catholic works written between 1518 and 1525
Institutionelle Trägheit? Mittelalterliches Erbe in reformierten Bibliotheken
This article examines the preservation of medieval books in Reformed libraries in the territory of present-day Switzerland. Given the persistence of late medieval practices and approaches in Protestant academia, it examines whether the example of libraries reveals a kind of institutional inertia, i.e. whether the pressure of existing collections and the normativity of de facto established practices gave the medieval library heritage a weight that slowed down radical change and disruption. It is shown that the medieval legacy did indeed exert a kind of formal pressure on the design of reformed libraries, which can even be traced down to the formulation of doctrine. However, the article also argues that the resulting continuities are by no means negative, but in some cases led to highly original approaches.This article examines the preservation of medieval books in Reformed libraries in the territory of present-day Switzerland. Although the doctrines of both the Anabaptists and the «Altgläubige» are rejected in the Swiss Reformed confessional writings of the 1530s, researchers emphasise their «ecumenical character», such as the First Helvetic Confession of 1536. Which positions were labelled heretical and how they could be dealt with was repeatedly discussed in different ways – not only in the confessional writings such as the Berner Synodus of 1532 and the Basler Bekenntnis of 1534, but also in the correspondance. Castellios Dialogi sacri: Ein 250 Jahre lang weitherum benutztes europäisches Lateinlehrbuch eines höchst umstrittenen Autors
This essay deals with the Dialogi sacri by Sebastian Castellio. They comprise 137 dialogues on stories from the Old and New Testaments, which served as textbooks in Latin schools for 250 years. The selection of material has never been analyzed before, although it is very idiosyncratic. Most of the important stories are missing, such as the dialogues on the Exodus, the Sinai tradition, the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. They only appear indirectly as announcements or rather promises from God. With sideway glances at Castellio’s entire theological work, the author is able to shed new light on his doctrine of God and his image of man and demonstrates the reason for the gaps in Castellio’s dialogues, which hint to his theology oriented towards the promissio Dei.This essay deals with the Dialogi sacri by Sebastian Castellio.
