Are Croatian Insurance Companies Meeting the Efficiency Frontier?
The insurance industry plays a vital role in the enhancement of national financial and economic development and growth, by providing individuals and businesses with broad spectrum of financial security products and being a key player in the process of financial intermediation (Karim & Jhantansana, 2005). Insurance companies are one of the leading institutional investors that are beneficial to the economy through the various roles that they play. The importance of insurance companies is increasing mainly due to the various services they offer and the complexity of their operation
The Efforts of the Republic of North Macedonia in Improving the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence by Harmonizing the National Legislation with International and European Standards
The need for permanent discussion of gender-based violence (GBV) in academic circles and its sociological and criminological analysis, stems from the fact that gender-based violence is often a trigger and cause for multiple violations of basic human rights and vital interests. In particular, gender-based violence is a violation of human rights because it seriously threatens the safety, health and life of an individual. It is an umbrella term for any harmful act that is perpetrated against a person’s will and that is based on socially ascribed (i.e. gender) differences between males and females. It includes acts that inflict
physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering, threats of such acts, coercion, and other deprivations of liberty. GBV stems from unequal power relations between men and
women and the resulting discrimination against women. For the reasons that women and girls are still the most frequent victims of genderbased violence, despite the fact that it is already recognized as a violation of human rights,we believe that a permanent monitoring of criminological elements, development of national legislations and implementation of good practices in this area are necessary. On the one hand, for keeping up with the new trends and developing the tools for adequate response, but also to determine the omissions that are being made in practice – which lead to constant statistics with no prospect of their reduction – and are alarming us for the need of improvement

Silver nanoparticles: toxicity and inhibitory effects against aflatoxins
Among the numerous nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, like silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), are the most employed. Significant focus has been given to their dual role
due to their versatile properties. Beneficial, on the one side, as potent antimicrobial properties determine different applications in medicine, agriculture and food safety, to potentially harmful on the other side. Mycotoxins, secondary metabolites produced by toxigenic strains of fungi, are highly toxic substances recognized for their influence on processes of mutagenesis and carcinogenesis, hepatotoxicity,
immunosuppression and estrogenic properties in animals and humans, posing severe threats to health through contaminated food and feed. Thus, this paper explores the toxicity mechanisms of AgNPs and their inhibitory effects on aflatoxins, a class of mycotoxins produced mostly by Aspergillus species that pose significant health risks. The interaction between AgNPs and aflatoxins is examined,
highlighting the potential of AgNPs in mitigating aflatoxin contamination. The article gives a summary of the synthesis, properties and dual roles of AgNPs in the toxicity and inhibition of aflatoxins, concentrating on their possible uses and safety concerns at the end. It is found that, there are elements that affect AgNP’s toxicity, like particle solubility, surface area, surface charge, size, concentration, formulation, tendency to agglomerate and exposure duration. Therefore, assessing the safe levels of AgNP exposure and developing guidelines for their use in different fields are crucial for minimizing the risks. It can be summarized that the biosynthesized AgNPs generated through green synthesis, owing to their biocompatibility and low toxicity, could be applied in harmless concentrations as
strong antifungals and anti-mycotoxins. This can offer significant potential for enhancing food safety due to their strong antimicrobial properties, which can inhibit the growth of foodborne pathogens and extend shelf life. However, the potential for nanoparticle migration into food must be considered, which raises critical concerns about human health, regulatory challenges and environmental
impact

Mucocele of the appendix
Mucocele of the appendix is dilation of the appendiceal lumen and its filling with mucin.
Due to the unspecific symptoms and rare occurrence, caution in diagnosis and treatment is
required because of possible intraoperative and postoperative complications. We are presenting a
patient at the age of 46 with the observed mucocele of the appendix during colonoscopy, which
was confirmed by ultrasound of the abdomen and CT of the abdomen. The mucocele sized 80
mm х 20 mm х 10 mm was treated operatively with right hemicolectomy. The patient has normal
findings at control examinations.
Key words: mucocele; appendix; mucinous neoplasms; low-grade appendiceal mucinous

Targeting the MAPK signaling pathway: implications and prospects of flavonoids in 3P medicine as modulators of cancer cell plasticity and therapeutic resistance in breast cancer patients
Cancer drug resistance poses a significant challenge in oncology, primarily driven by cancer cell plasticity, which promotes tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, and therapeutic evasion in many different cancers. Breast cancers (BCs) are a prominent example of that, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases and 670,000 BC-related deaths registered worldwide annually. Triple-negative BC is especially challenging for treatments demonstrating particularly aggressive disease course, an early manifestation of metastatic disease, frequent drug-resistant cancer types, and poor individual outcomes. Although chemosensitizing agents have been developed, their clinical utility in oncology remains unproven. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway is considered a critical regulator of intracellular and extracellular signaling highly relevant for both — genetic and epigenetic modifications. Dysregulation of the MAPK signaling pathways plays a significant role in conferring chemoresistance in BC. Contextually, targeting the MAPK pathway represents a promising strategy for overcoming drug resistance and enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer agents in BC treatment. On the other hand, flavonoids, a prominent class of phytochemicals, are key modulators of MAPK signaling. Flavonoids interact with the ERK, JNK, p38, and ERK5 pathways of the MAPK signaling cascade and present a promising avenue for developing novel anti-cancer therapies and re-sensitizing agents for the treatment of BC. Compounds such as quercetin, kaempferol, genistein, luteolin, myricetin, EGCG, baicalein, baicalin, nobiletin, morin, delphinidin, acacetin, isorhamnetin, apigenin, silymarin, among others, have been identified as specific modulators of MAPK signaling, exerting complex downstream effects in BC cells increasing therewith drug efficacy and suppressing tumor growth and aggressivity. These properties reflect mechanisms of great clinical relevance to overcome therapeutic resistance in overall BC management. This article highlights corresponding mechanisms and provides clinically relevant illustrations in the framework of 3P medicine for primary (protection of individuals at high risk against health-to-disease transition) and secondary care (protection against metastatic BC progression). 3PM novelty makes good use of patient phenotyping and stratification, predictive multi-level diagnostics, and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to the individualized interpretation of big data — all proposed for cost-effective treatments tailored to individualized patient profiles with clear benefits to patients and advanced BC management
Geopolitical aspects of the EU enlargement process: Macedonian and Ukrainian case
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, European integration became the primary policy focus for almost all Eastern European states. The European Union expanded to twenty-five members in 2004, added three more by 2013 and lost one in 2020. Today, the EU has twenty-seven member states, and eight European countries holding candidate status.
This paper analyses the European integration process of North Macedonia and Ukraine, both of which have recently opened accession negotiations. The significant disparity in the pace of their integration processes - remarkably slow in the case of North Macedonia (seventeen years from obtaining candidate status to the start of accession negotiation) and exceptionally fast in the case of Ukraine (one and a half year from obtaining candidate status to the to start accession negotiation) – serves as the focal point for examining the EU’s approach to enlargement policy.
The study aims to examine whether the geopolitical interests of EU member states are becoming increasingly influential in shaping decisions regarding European integration, and to identify which specific geopolitical motives are most influential in a decision-making process.
To address these questions, a comparative approach is applied, analyzing the European agreements signed with both states, as well as the EU’s role and interest in resolving the internal and external disputes that North Macedonia and Ukraine have encountered and continue to face.
By comparing these specific cases the study contributes to research on theories of European integration and debate on whether institutional criteria or geopolitical and strategic interest drive EU enlargement
Challenges in the fight against corruption in the EU integration process - case study: North Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro
An effective fight against corruption is a condition for the rule of law, building a state with functional institutions and respecting human freedoms and rights. Achieving positive results is a challenge for both developed democracies and countries in transition.
The paper analyzes the normative and institutional frameworks for fighting corruption in three countries from the Western Balkans, North Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, as well as their strategic documents for fighting corruption. Despite the results achieved in the last few decades, the problems with corruption are still complex, and in this direction the focus of this paper is research into the reasons for such a situation as well as the challenges for the future.
In the efforts for faster integration into the EU, the three countries are implementing reforms with the aim of more effectively fighting corruption, but there is one key factor for achieving this goal, and that is the existence of political will to fight corruption. This aspect is particularly emphasized in the paper because without political will it is impossible to achieve visible successes in the fight against corruption. The authors emphasize that the best laws can be written, quality strategic documents can be adopted, but if they are not implemented, it is as if they do not exist.
The paper pays special attention to the transition process in North Macedonia as well as to the implementation of the current National Strategy for the Prevention of Corruption and Conflict of Interest. In addition, the authors present several proposals for changes in the normative and institutional framework of North Macedonia for the fight against corruption.
The methodological approach is a combination of several methods, content analysis, comparative legal research, historical and statistical methods
Sociolinguistics to Language Variations
In daily life, we employ languages for a variety of reasons. The majority of individuals speak multiple
languages, and they can be classified as multilingual (speaking more than two languages) or bilingual
(speaking two languages). As Wardhaugh explains, language can be simply described as a system or
code that societies use to communicate with one another. They are compelled to cooperate by figuring
out their shared code, even if this system may be the same for two persons or completely different.
Communities and their cultures influence any linguistic or speech changes. In addition to studying the
relationship between language and society, sociolinguistics also addresses phenomena that are
specifically related to this field of study, such as pidgins and creoles
