Analysis of Historic Multi-leaf Masonry Behaviour Under Compressive Load Through Digital Image Correlation (DIC)
This research investigates historic multi-leaf masonry with a particular focus on the out-of-plane strains of historic masonry walls subjected to compressive loading. The specimens analyzed consist of two distinct types: three double-curtain walls with non-collaborating layers and three walls with two external curtains and an internal core. The primary objective is to study the behaviour of masonry under compressive load by comparing experimental results obtained using the traditional method of Linear Variable Displacement Transducers (LVDTs) with those derived from the novel technique of Digital Image Correlation (DIC). This comparison aims to identify the failure modes of multi-leaf masonry and to analyze the strains that develop when the walls are compressed. Another key aspect explored in this study are the data acquisition methodologies. Specifically, the research seeks to validate the innovative digital tool, DIC, employed in conjunction with the traditional LVDT method. It assesses the reliability of the DIC results by comparing them with those obtained from LVDTs, highlighting its numerous advantages. Unlike the traditional methodology, DIC, which employs optical cameras, does not require physical contact with the specimen during testing. It provides continuous data throughout the experiment and allows for the measurement of displacements and deformations across the entire specimen, as opposed to the localized areas monitored by LVDTs. Furthermore, this research contributes valuable insights into multi-leaf masonry and failure loads, which are essential for characterizing this type of masonry
A robust intermittency equation formulation for transition modeling in Spalart–Allmaras simulations of airfoil flows over a wide range of Reynolds numbers
This paper introduces a new robust formulation for local correlation-based laminar-to-turbulent transition models. This mechanism is incorporated into Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations, coupled with the Spalart–Allmaras (SA) turbulence model, considering both γ and (formula presented) transition frameworks. In this context, special attention is placed on numerical stabilization of the γ transport equation, which is identified as the root cause of instabilities observed in both γ and (formula presented)-based models. To this end, the intermittency equation is reformulated in logarithmic form and further stabilized through an energy-based limiting to bound excessively high positive values. In order to suppress unphysical pressure oscillations in the transition region, a gradient-driven artificial viscosity is also introduced. Additionally, the SA equation is augmented with strain-rate-modulated production and rotation correction terms. The presented approach has demonstrated consistent effectiveness and robustness in the simulation of flow fields around airfoils over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, making it suitable for practical aerodynamic design applications

Evaluating the Impact of Various Agronomic Management Practices on Food Loss at the Primary Production Stage Using Proximal and Remote Sensing
Reducing food loss is critical for enhancing food security and sustainability. Food loss at the primary production stage is caused by crop abiotic and biotic stresses (e.g., water, irradiation, temperature, nutrients, and pest, disease, weeds, respectively). Our research in the context of the European project FOLOU aims to evaluate the impact of both stresses on yield of maj or crops. Three distinct management strategies were identified and implemented to achieve this objective: Business as Usual (BAU), Enhanced Conventional (ECV), and Zero Stress (ZST). These strategies were designed and applied to assess their impact on crop yield and health, utilizing multiple data sources such as remote sensing data and crop phenological and physiological surveys. The merging of these different types of data allows for the monitoring and analysis of crop health, growth stages, and yield outcomes. This study aims to quantify the impact of stress factors on yield, and consequently on food production loss, by comparing the effects of BAU, ECV, and ZST on wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum (Desf.) Husn.), In this paper the preliminary results on wheat yield gap and remotely sensed data are presented. The results provide valuable insights for farmers and policymakers aiming to implement sustainable intensification of farming practices, to minimize the gap between potential and actual yields and reduce food loss at the primary production stage
Substitution of slag with waste-derived precursors for alkali-activated mortars
In this study, three wastes (almond shell biomass ash (ABA), mining sand (MIN), and municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI)) were investigated as innovative precursors for alkali-activated mortars. Initially, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was partially substituted with ABA, MIN, and MSWI FA at increasing percentages (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by mass) in pastes activated with 4M and 8M NaOH solutions. Then, the most promising wastes and substitution levels were selected to manufacture mortars using calcareous sand. Mortars were cured under controlled conditions (temperature of 20 ± 1 °C and relative humidity > 95%) and their compressive strength (Rc) was evaluated after 2, 7, 28, and 90 days of curing. Results demonstrated that the NaOH molarity influences workability and mechanical performances of the mortars. ABA emerged as the most promising precursor due to its high potassium content. Indeed, the replacement of GGBFS with 25% ABA contributes significantly to the development of mechanical strength since the additional potassium increases the availability of alkali
Systemic inflammatory response markers improve the discrimination for prognostic model in hepatocellular carcinoma
Background/purpose of the study: We aimed to evaluate the performance of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and their combination (combined NLR-PLR, CNP) in predicting overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in a large cohort of unselected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Methods: Training and validation cohort data were retrieved from the Italian Liver Cancer (ITA.LI.CA) database. The optimal cut-offs of NLR and PLR were calculated according to the multivariable fractional polynomial and the minimum p value method. The continuous effect and best cut-off categories of NLR and PLR were analyzed using multivariable Cox regression analysis. A shrinkage procedure adjusted over-fitting hazard ratio (HR) estimates of best cut-off categories. C-statistic and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were calculated to evaluate the discrimination properties of the biomarkers when added to clinical survival models. Results: 2,286 patients were split into training (n = 1,043) and validation (n = 1,243) cohorts. The optimal cut-offs for NLR and PLR were 1.45 and 188, respectively. NLR (HR 1.58, 95% CI 1.11–2.28, p = 0.014) and PLR (HR 1.79, 95% CI 1.11–2.90, p = 0.018) were independent predictors of OS. When incorporated into a clinical prognostic model that includes age, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), the CHILD–Pugh score, and the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system, CNP had a significant incremental value in predicting OS (IDI 1.3%, p = 0.04). Data were confirmed in the validation cohort. Neither NLR nor PLR significantly predicted RFS in the training cohort. Conclusions: NLR, PLR, and CNP independently predicted shorter OS in HCC patients. The addition of CNP to the survival prediction model significantly improved the model’s accuracy in predicting OS

Il presente articolo intende apportare un contributo allo studio dell’inserimento dell’Italia nel mercato internazionale del legname fra XIX e XX secolo. L’idea di fondo è quella di affiancare a un approccio macro, tendente a richiamare alcuni processi di medio periodo, caratterizzanti la struttura produttiva italiana nel settore e la relazione con i mercati esteri, una prospettiva di tipo microeconomico e qualitativo, che permetta di comprendere più nel dettaglio i meccanismi di costruzione e di funzionamento del mercato in questo comparto
Inequality and transmission channels of monetary policy in a macro agent-based model
This study examines the impact of monetary policy on income and wealth inequality through several transmission channels, including income composition, earnings heterogeneity, saving redistribution, portfolio composition, and household debt. Using an agent-based stock-flow-consistent model, the study finds that a permanent increase in the policy rate raises unemployment and reduces firm dividends, hitting net debtors harder than net savers and worsening income inequality. In addition, the savings redistribution channel contributes to the increase in the income of net savers. Furthermore, the study shows that a higher policy rate also leads to lower asset values accumulation, especially for the poorest households, thereby exacerbating wealth inequality through the portfolio composition channel
