‘Ties that would Divide’: Explaining the NU’s Exit from Masyumi in 1952
This article explains the political and historical roots of the making of Muslim political identities in Indonesia. It seeks to answer the question: why Muslim communities in Indonesia are inclined to grouping in such social differences between traditionalist (NU) and modernist (Muhammadiyah) organizations. These two organizations emerged as a model of social division based on religio-cultural groupings of Indonesian Muslims that emerged during the process of national identity construction in the late colonial period. Concerned with the historical development of Islamic organizations in the post-independent Indonesia, this article specifically examines the role of Masyumi in creating both unity and conflict in Muslim society, which occurred in the 1950s. However, this article’s principal explanation for the emergence of Muslim cleavages is the subsequent moment of elite conflict in response to the most important political development in Indonesia: the first national elections in 1955.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v19i2.36
Ḥarakah al-Ṭullāb wa al-Siyāsah: Dirāsat fi Mawqif al-Ṭullāb al-Muslimīn al-Indūnīsiyīn min al-Siyāsah bi Indūnīsīyā
Since the very beginning of Indonesian nationalism, students have been instrumental in Indonesian politics. The proto-nationalist student organization, Budi Utomo, established in 1908, was one of the central proponents of the nationalist movement at the turn of the century. Students also played a critical role in the political developments since 1965, when Orde Lama (Old Order) ended and the Orde Baru (New Order) began. The present article focuses on those students who were involved in the Muslim youth organization PII (Pelajar Islam Indonesia, Indonesian Muslim Students' Association), particularly on its dynamic political attitudes during the Old Order and New Order.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v8i1.69

Fiqh, Women and Human Rights: Competing Methodologies
This paper attempts to, firstly, examine in some depth various writers' investigations into Islam, women and human rights. Secondly, and more importantly, it attemps provide a clear conceptual framework within which to articulate a foundation for the subject in the future. Such a re-conceptualisation is necessary to anchor future attempts at law reform within an Islamic jurisprudential heritage. By re-locating the debate within the Islamic heritage, any articulation of human rights and Muslim women will have the authority of a fiqh-inspired methodology. For muslim women engaged in the struggle for human rights, such a strategy will be more successful than either employing secular "Western" feminist discourse or by claiming the right to interpret the original Islamic sources whilst ignoring fiqh history, methodology and terminology.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v10i1.64
