The purpose of this article is to give a textual analysis of the manuscript and assess its contribution to the history of the Ḥaḍramī migration to the Netherlands East Indies and the Ḥaḍramī awakening that took its shape in the first half of the twentieth century. This paper describes the stories about the relationship between Sufi with the king in the process of Islamization of a society that is a lot of coloring the literature in the Muslim world. This happens due to the fact that the relationship between the world religions (spiritual) with the world powers (the material) is always a problem that is somewhat typical. On the one hand, people tend to assume that a Sufi should not approach politics, because it is contrary to the ascetic world she lived.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v3i3.79

This conference was organized with the idea to discuss some crucial issues that challenge global society, in particular, state-government in facing an increasingly globalised world. Society becomes more diverse and complex as a result of infiltration of other cultures and people movements. This situation poses serious challenges for state-government and civil society to ensure that complex social cohesion will not lead to tension and conflict both among members of the society and between the state and the society.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v18i2.43

Introduction: Islamic Law in South-East Asia

    No full text
In this paper the author confines herself to a specific set of material so as to narrow the issue. All too often this is not done and, as a consequence, argument very quickly degenerates into generalities, mostly driven by personal and/or political bias. Such is illustrated in Ahmad's discussion of Western feminist comment on Islam, Muslim women and human rights where, in quite influential books, we find a combination of inappropriate theory with no understanding of fiqh. The theory looks convincing to a Western reader because it is Western. The insidious nature of the assumptions involved is demonstrated in Ahmad's discussion of Iranian and Malaysian Muslim feminist writings in which we can find an "internalised orientalism". All that this means is that Western feminist theory has set the agenda and determines the method of argument, a position which is not acceptable.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v10i1.63

Fatwas on Inter-faith Marriage in Indonesia

    No full text
This article presents a study on the fatwas (legal opinion) concerning inter faith marriage in Indonesia. The fatwas under the discussion are those issued by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) in post-Independence Indonesia. Those fatwas are of special significance, both in terms of Islamic legal discourses and -perhaps more importantly- Muslims' perceptions and attitudes towards other religious communities in Indonesia. Issued by authoritative bodies of Indonesian Islam, more in particular the NU, the fatwas could be said as presenting the voices of Indonesian Muslims in their encounters with the issues of religious tolerance and plurality.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i3.65
