Adaptive Fractal Gene Regulatory Networks for Robot Control

Adaptive Fractal Gene Regulatory Networks for Robot Control for citing: "However, the recent work of Quick (2003) is highly relevant, describing the evolution of a simple GRN for control of a Khepera robot. Quick emphasises the need for GRNs to be embodied (linked or coupled) to their environments, with changes in environment causing changes in the GRN (Quick 2003). He successfully evolved light-finding behaviour, although there seem to be evolvability issues with his simple representation of genes and proteins.

A Taxonomy for artificial embryogeny Good *historical* overview (list most older works), term Artificial Embryogeny introduced, show functional similarities between L-systems/grammar and cell chemistry approaches, propose benchmarks taxonomy: 5 major dimensions of development (names very cell chemistry biased): -cell fate (differentiation mechanism) -targeting (where to interact; fixed / relative) -heterochrony (timing and order of events, e.g. centrol toe of horses developed so fast that other 4 toes became irrelevant) -canalization (slight gene changes do seldomly cause related or connected components to fail in nature) [proposed mechanisms: stochastic events during development to increase stability; flexible resource allocation among developing parts and overproduction of cells (should have apoptosis then), see p.114] -complexification (new genes, e.g. by duplication) [variable length genotypes -> speciation; sexual matching -> historical marking (global gene numbering)] [gene duplicate results must be carefully integrated (not too much disturbance)
