Proposing a Knowledge Engineering Based Approach for Process Capability/Maturity Models Customization
No full textSoftware Process Capability/Maturity Models (SPCMMs) are repositories of best practices for software processes suitable for assessing and/or improving processes in software intensive organizations. Yet, although there is a trend to customize such models to specific domains, little research is done on how such SPCMMs should be developed with quality. In this paper, we, therefore, propose a systematic approach to support the customization of SPCMMs for specific domains. The approach is developed based on standard development processes integrating Knowledge Engineering techniques and experiences on how such models are currently developed in practice. First feedback from piloting the approach in the customization of ISO/IEC 15504, CMMI and MPS.BR for the SaaS scenario indicates that the approach can be useful for creation of SPCMMs
Excavation of an Enclosure Site at Rossnaree, (Brú na Bóinne) Co. Meath 10E0242. Preliminary Report Excavation 2010
No full textThis report details the first season of excavation in summer 2010 of the site of a Neolithic lithic scatter and early medieval enclosure at Rossnaree in the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site in Co. Meath. It was first discovered as a dense scatter of lithic (chipped stone) material on the surface of a tilled field close to the River Boyne, NGR 299200 273150, at the point where the famous ‘Bend of the Boyne’ begins . This was subsequently investigated using various geophysical techniques at which time it became apparent that there was a substantial multivallate enclosure at the site. This enclosure was reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland and an RMP number was subsequently issued (ME019-080---)
Medi SPICE: An Update
No full textThis paper provides an update on the development of a software process assessment and improvement model (Medi SPICE) specifically for the medical device industry. The development of Medi SPICE was launched at the SPICE 2009 Conference. Medi SPICE will consist of a Process Reference Model and a Process Assessment Model. The Medi SPICE Process Assessment Model will be used to perform conformant assessments of the software process capability of medical device suppliers in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 15504-2: 2003. Some significant amendments have been made to the Medi SPICE architecture from what was proposed at the SPICE 2009 Conference. These amendments will be presented in this paper
An Agile Process Model for Product Derivation in Software Product Line Engineering
No full textSoftware Product Lines (SPL) and Agile practices have emerged as new paradigms for developing software. Both approaches share common goals; such as improving productivity, reducing time to market, decreasing development costs and increasing customer satisfaction. These common goals provide the motivation for this research. We believe that integrating Agile practices into SPL can bring a balance between agility and formalism. However, there has been little research on such integration. We have been researching the potential of integrating Agile approaches in one of the key SPL process areas, product derivation. In this paper we present an outline of our Agile process model for product derivation that was developed through industry based case study research
Applying E-learning Technologies to Library Information Literacy Instruction
No full textAcademic libraries have adopted and adapted the e-learning technologies for delivery of their Information Literacy programmes. This chapter describes some of the ways in which academic librarians have been very inventive in using emerging technologies to enhance their instructional content. By using a case study of DkIT the chapter details how information literacy and the elearning technologies emerged together. E-learning platforms like the virtual learning environments (VLE) are the natural place for libraries to use as portals for their IL instruction.
This chapter argues that using the VLE (with the inherent instructional interaction made possible by this technology), and adopting some amalgam of the newer teaching styles like problem-based learning and blended learning techniques completes the IL circle for librarians. Librarians now have the tools at their disposal to finally fulfil the promises we undertook when we embarked on our information literacy programmes
Culture in Global Software development - a Weakness or Strength?

Research carried out to date has raised concerns over how to manage cultural differences in global software development. Our empirical research in India, a major outsourcing destination, has helped us investigate this complex issue of global software development. A triangulated study based on a questionnaire, telephonic interviews and structured face-to-face interviews
with 15 Project Managers and Senior Executives has revealed how they cope with the demands of cultural differences imposed by a geographically distributed environment. This research study brings forward various techniques initiated by these project managers to deal with cultural differences that exist within geographically distributed software development teams. We also discuss different strategies and make a case to explain how to build on and take advantage of cultural differences that exist in global software development

Impact of naturally spawning captive-bred Atlantic salmon on wild populations: depressed recruitment and increased risk of climate-mediated extinction
No full textThe assessment report of the 4th International Panel on Climate Change confirms that global warming is strongly affecting biological systems and that 20–30% of species risk extinction from projected future increases in temperature. It is essential that any measures taken to conserve individual species and their constituent populations against climate-mediated declines are appropriate. The release of captive bred animals to augment wild populations is a widespread management strategy for many species but has proven controversial. Using a regression model based on a 37-year study of wild and sea ranched Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) spawning together in the wild, we show that the escape of captive bred animals into the wild can substantially depress recruitment and more specifically disrupt the capacity of natural populations to adapt to higher winter water temperatures associated with climate variability. We speculate the mechanisms underlying this seasonal response and suggest that an explanation based
on bio-energetic processes with physiological responses synchronized by photoperiod is plausible. Furthermore, we predict, by running the model forward using projected future climate scenarios, that these cultured fish substantially increase the risk of extinction for the studied population within 20 generations. In contrast, we show that positive outcomes to climate change are possible if captive bred animals are prevented from breeding in the wild. Rather than imposing an additional genetic load on wild populations by releasing maladapted captive bred animals, we propose that conservation efforts should focus on optimizing conditions for adaptation to occur by reducing exploitation and protecting
critical habitats. Our findings are likely to hold true for most poikilothermic species where captive breeding programmes are used in population management
