A Common Awareness and Knowledge Platform for Studying and Enabling Independent Living – CAPSIL
The population of the world is growing older, and the
balance of old to young is shifting so that by 2050 over
30% of the population is expected to be over 60 years
old[1], with particularly high ratios of old to young in
the EU, USA and Japan. CAPSIL is an FP7
Coordinating Support Action that incorporates a
strategic international coalition of University and
Industrial partners that already have extensive teams
developing hardware/software/knowledge solutions to
independent living based on user requirements. CAPSIL
has two fundamental goals:
1. To carry out an analysis of the state of the art
with regards to technology, healthcare and public policy
in the EU, US and Japan for enabling independent living
for older adults. Based on this analysis, develop a
detailed roadmap for EU research to achieve
effective and sustainable solutions for independent living
2. To support aging research by proposing procedures to incorporate all of these diverse solutions into WiKi entries (CAPSIL WiKi). It is our hope that these CAPSIL WiKi’s will enable researchers and the ICT industry to get the information they need to quickly and easily test solutions for prolonging independent living within the many and various heterogeneous communities.
In this paper we will summarise the principal findings of the CAPSIL Roadmap and present an overview of the main research gaps and recommendations for policy and research development. Finally, we will introduce the CAPSIL WiKi infrastructure
Contagion of Physiological Correlates of Emotion between Performer and Audience: An Exploratory Study
Musical and performance experiences are often described as evoking
powerful emotions, both in the listener/observer and player/performer. There is
a significant body of literature describing these experiences along with related
work examining physiological changes in the body during music listening and
the physiological correlates of emotional state. However there are still open
questions as to how and why, emotional responses may be triggered by a performance,
how audiences may be influenced by a performers mental or emotional state and what effect the presence of an audience has on performers. We present a pilot study and some initial findings of our investigations into these questions, utilising a custom software and hardware system we have developed.
Although this research is still at a pilot stage, our initial experiments point towards
significant correlation between the physiological states of performers and audiences and we here present the system, the experiments and our preliminary data

Developing Trust In Virtual Software Development Teams
Today globally distributed software development has become the norm for many organizations and the popularity of implementing such an approach continues to increase. In these circumstances a strategy often employed is the use of virtual software development teams. Due to the collaborative nature of software development this has proved a difficult and complex endeavor. Research has identified distance in its various forms as an important factor which negatively impacts on global software development and on virtual software team operation in particular. In this context, the aspects of distance have been defined as temporal, geographical, cultural and linguistic. A key element for the success of any team based project is the development of trust and cooperation. Each aspect of distance can negatively impact on the development of trust and hamper cooperation particularly in the virtual team environment. An additional factor which this research identified is the importance and negative impact fear plays. The serious implications of these factors are due to the need for dependence on asynchronous and online communication which is inherent to global software development and the operation of virtual software teams in particular. The findings presented here are the results from four independent studies undertaken over a twelve year period which consider each of these issues. Having identified the problems associated with trust and communication, how these issues were successfully addressed and managed on a multimillion dollar project which was heading for failure is outlined

The PI-PLC inhibitor U-73122 is a potent inhibitor of the SERCA pump in smooth muscle
In this issue MacMillan & McCarron (2010) demonstrate that the PLC inhibitor U-73122 can potently inhibit Ca2+ release from isolated smooth muscle cells independent of its effect on PLC. Their data suggest that the PLC inhibitor can block the SERCA pump in smooth muscle and cast doubt on the reliability of U-73122 as the main pharmacological tool to assess the role of the PI-PLC pathway in cellular signalling
Medi SPICE Development
This paper outlines the development of a software process assessment and improvement model (Medi SPICE) for the medical device industry. The paper details how medical device regulations may be satisfied by extending relevant processes and practices from ISO/IEC 15504-5. The paper also describes the proposed phases of delivery for Medi SPICE.
Medi SPICE will define a a Process Reference Model (PRM), Process Assessment Model (PAM) and Organizational Maturity Model (OMM). The Medi SPICE Process Assessment Model will be used to perform ISO/IEC 15504 conformant assessments of the software process capability of medical device suppliers in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 15504-2: 2003. The Medi SPICE Process Assessment Model will be based on ISO/IEC 15504-5: 2006 extended to provide coverage of additional software development practices that are required to achieve regulatory compliance within the medical device industry. The processes will be defined within an Organizational Maturity Model conformant with ISO/IEC TR 15504-7:2008

Testing is frequently reported as a crucial stage in the software development process. With traditional approaches acceptance testing is the last stage of the process before release. Acceptance Test Driven Development (ATDD) promotes the role of an expert customer in defining tests and uses tool support to automate and execute these tests.
