    Data Security Overview for Medical Mobile Apps Assuring the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of Data in Transmission

    Mobile medical apps are a growing mechanism for healthcare delivery through an increasingly complex network of information technology systems connecting patients, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and medical devices. Characteristically, these apps are designed to gather measure and transmit sensitive personal health data, which is required to be kept secure through regulations and legislation. With the integration of mobile medical apps into the healthcare industry, the multitude of sensitive personal health data transmitted across various applications, technologies and networks is increasing. This raises questions about compromised patient privacy and the security of the data associated with the mobile apps. The detections of increased app hacking by security companies and researchers are especially significant amidst today’s rapid growth in healthcare mobile apps. Consequently, security and integrity of the data associated with these apps is a growing concern for the app industry, particularly in the highly regulated medical domain. Until recently, data integrity and security in transmission has not been given serious consideration in the development of mobile medical apps. This paper provides an overview of existing mobile medical apps data security issues and security practices. We discuss current regulations concerning data security for mobile medical apps. The paper introduces our current research in data security for mobile medical apps. There are currently no procedures or standard practices for developers of mobile medical apps to assure data integrity and security. The paper introduces the concept of a process model to assist mobile medical app developers to implement data security requirements to assure the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of data in transmission. The research is grounded on the only published medical device security standard IEC/TR 80001-2-2:2012

    Comparison of design alternatives with respect to the slope stability of the Calaveras Replacement Dam Sunol, California USA

    The Calaveras Dam, in Sunol California was deemed to be susceptible to failure during a moderate earthquake in the region when it was examined in 2001. As a result of the 2001 study, a replacement dam was designed to withstand a magnitude 7.25 maximum credible earthquake (MCE). The accepted design consisted of an earth and fill dam using materials sourced from borrow areas within the site boundaries. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate design alternatives to the accepted design for the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project (CDRP). This was accomplished by conducting in depth research into earth dams and the materials that they are comprised of. Next, the materials available onsite were investigated using historic borehole logs and site investigation reports. Using the information found through research, an asphalt core and concrete face dam were modelled using the computer software package Slide 6.0 to determine their stability. This dissertation found that while the two design alternatives showed acceptable slope stability they would not be as effective or safe as the design earth and fill dam. The circumstances in which these alternatives may be chosen may be if the core material available on site was not suitable for use under the design specifications, however, it was found that the core material used from borrow area E in the existing design, met all of the design specifications. Therefore, In this case, importation of an impermeable core would not be necessary. Next, if the core material was found to be susceptible to cracking under seismic loading an alternative core would be necessary. However, due to constraints on the length of this dissertation it was decided that seismic considerations on slope stability would be omitted as seismic considerations could form the basis for a dissertation in itself. Next, the asphalt core dam and concrete core dams would require the importation of significant amounts of fill material. This is costly and has significant implications on the safety of those using Calaveras Road. Therefore, it was concluded that the existing earth and rockfill dam design was the safest most effective method of construction of the three considerations for the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project

    An analysis of the impact of formative peer assessment and screencast tutor feedback on veterinary nursing students' learning

    This paper examines the ways in which the learning environment can be enhanced for higher level learners by means of feedback via screencasting and peer assessment. A group of final year veterinary nursing students in DkIT were given tutor feedback via screencasting and encouraged to formatively peer assess each other’s work. Their attitudes to these feedback methods and their reflections on the usefulness of these methods for their learning form the basis of this paper. Deep learning, improved communication leading to greater social cohesion in the learning group and increased self-confidence are positive outcomes which such methods can evince if learner fear and apprehension is carefully addressed and controlled

    Research Findings from an Industrial Trial of a Traceability Assessment and Implementation Framework

    Software systems are becoming increasingly complex. Within safety critical domains such as medical device software, this increasing complexity is placing growing demands on manufacturers who must ensure their software not only meets functional requirements but is also safe and reliable. However, the Food and Drugs Administration who regulate medical device software in the United States report a significant increase in recalls between years 2003 and 2012 and have cited software difficulties as one of the frequent causes of recalls. Furthermore a recent analysis of traceability documentation submitted to the Administration has revealed that the traceability data was incomplete, incorrect, and conflicting in many cases. This is problematic as traceability plays an important role in the development of safe and reliable software. In this paper we present the validation, through industry trial, of a traceability assessment and implementation framework which we have developed to assist medical device organizations implement traceability in an efficient and regulatory compliant manner. Our findings show that implementation of the framework within two organizations improved their traceability process and that both organizations found the framework to be both useful and usable

    A new role has emerged over the last few decades in relation to families and children which in some cases is being filled by Social Care workers. This is the role of Access/Contact supervisor. Changes in the structures of families which in turn is being driven by changes in family law and societal attitudes are creating a demand for formalised access arrangements. This is particularly true where there is conflict between the children’s parents. Child welfare agencies are trying to strike a balance between the rights of children in care to have contact with their parents and the need to protect these children from potential harm. This is another area where demand for Supervised Access/Contact has grown, indeed it is from the world of child welfare that the role first emerged. The role involves being present while one or more parent who does not reside the child or children visits the child or children. The reasons for having the Access/Contact visit supervised can vary and therefore the role can vary accordingly. The role is somewhat controversial in that there is an ongoing debate as to whether or not it may be damaging to children in some circumstance to even consider allowing abusive parents to have access to their children however well it may be supervised. With disagreement among academics there has been calls for more research into the role and on the effects that parental access has on the children concerned. This project looked at the Role of Access/Contact supervisor in relation to Social Care and the education of Social care workers. This was done through a mixture of methodologies. Semi-structured interviews with social Care workers who were working in the role of Access/Contact supervisors were used to gather qualitative data. These interviews looked at the workers understanding of the role and its relationship with the Social care profession. A survey of Social Care students was also used to gather quantitative data on how education dealt with the topic. What was discovered by this project is that the Irish workers interviewed had a very clear understanding of their own role. The role is very much a social care one, however, there were differences in how the role was carried out in different organisations and some of the differences were quite significant. The workers in question were well equipped in general terms of skills and theories by their education, however, role specific training within social care education was not greatly in evidence

    The digital media sector is one of the most dynamic sectors of a knowledge economy, with the creative origination that underpins the creative media industries affording much potential for experimentation. The Picteilín conference provides a platform for Irish and European academics, postgraduate students, and practitioners to share knowledge and expand the boundaries of research that pivots on digital and creative media. Hosted by the Creative Media Research Group at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), Picteilín aims to provide a platform for communication between researchers, and ultimately to provide impetus and a common basis for the future of research in Creative Media. The interchange of research results takes place through keynotes, oral presentations, film screenings and poster sessions. A strength of Picteilín is that it maximizes synergies between disciplines. The conference not only promotes multidisciplinary research, by bringing researchers from music, games studies, computing, traditional media and digital media together to talk about issues from each of their perspectives, but it also promotes and reflects on interdisciplinary research. Picteilín 2016 focuses on the theme of “Narrative, Interactivity, and Emergent Digital Practices” is the fourth of a series of conferences hosted by the Creative Media Research Group
