Marketing: A Sociological Approach
International audienceMarketing involves a wide range of professions, activities and tools and it plays an increasingly important role in our lives. But what exactly is marketing and how did it come to assume such importance? Who are the marketing professionals, what exactly do they do and what influence do they have in our economy and society?Over the last forty years, sociologists have studied marketing and analysed its practices, techniques and consequences, producing a formidable body of knowledge about the nature of marketing and its impact. This book provides a concise account of these contributions and an introduction to the most important sociological concepts for understanding marketing such as consumption, the market, the organization and culture. Mellet presents marketing not just as a set of techniques but as a pervasive social activity performed by different actors in specific contexts according to particular rules and views. He unpacks the activity of marketing, showing who marketers are, how they think, what they do and how they shape and construct not only markets but also the world we live in.Written in a clear and accessible style, this book is the perfect introduction to marketing from a sociological perspective and it will be used on courses on marketing and the sociology of culture
Local Conceptions of Authority and Political Legitimacy in Africa
International audienceThe state in Africa has been the object of ongoing analysis and debate. Those who qualify it as ‘failed’, ‘weak’, ‘fragile’ or ‘neo-patrimonial’ rely on a strict Weberian definition which views the state as the monopolist of legitimate physical violence, an autonomous bureaucratic apparatus, the embodiment of popular sovereignty, and a spatially and territorially coherent entity. These features represent an essentially Western ideal type. As an alternative, scholars have explored its long historical formation, the interpenetration of the bureaucratic realm and the social world (Mitchell, 1991), and the everyday making of the state through processes of negotiation, contestation and bricolage. Other scholars have examined the fabric of informal political order, emphasizing, sometimes uncritically, ‘the strength of weak states’. This essay reviews the two books listed above by Portia Roelofs and Peer Schouten, which are part of the ongoing discussion on state-making theory. Both authors reflect on this theory from a local perspective, employing popular understandings of accountability, legitimacy and forms of sovereignty.Roelofs book on Nigeria and Schouten's on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are excellent cases through which to examine these issues and to rethink some of the significant challenges Africa faces. These include an outward-looking political economy based on mineral wealth in parts of the territory (for example, oil in Nigeria and coltan, copper and gold in Eastern Congo); decades of armed conflicts, indicating the difficulty of the central state in controlling its national territory; widespread forms of patronage understood as the distribution by politicians of private goods to citizens; and the imposition of structural adjustment programmes by the International Monetary Fund which drastically reduced the state bureaucracy and its capacity to govern societies
International audienceThe issue of constitutional revision, both in its practical applications and its very conceptualization, has experienced a resurgence in recent legal doctrine. This revival has coincided with a significant evolution in the field of fundamental rights, which are caught between being challenged by anti-liberal constitutionalism and expanding in the wake of environmental and digital constitutionalism. Starting from the idea that the Constitution is "the supreme law of the land", the dominant normative constitutionalism distinguishes between the organic and dogmatic parts of a constitution. While this distinction has the merit of clarity, it must be handled with caution. In fact, constitutional provisions are interdependent, as an analysis in terms of system effects reveals. Considering constitutional revision in one of its parts is bound to have an impact on the other, sometimes at the cost of jeopardizing the very objectives of the revision. Therefore, the constituent power, whose voluntarism is expressed mainly through constitutional revisions, must be attentive to these types of considerations, as must the citizens in whose name this power is exercised.
The politicization of the civil service in the Islamic Republics of Iran and Pakistan
International audienceThe chapter provides a comparative historical analysis of the politicization of the civil service in Iran and Pakistan by emphasizing the central issue of patronage political practices, whereby political patrons seek to maximize political control over the strategic bureaucratic positions of territorial administrators and provincial governors in particular, by shaping appointments and transfers. If the chapter shows that the modes of bureaucratization of the civil service over time frame the opportunities available for political patronage, it also argues that the extent of political patronage does not account for its effects on state capacity; rather, the chapter investigates the factors that regulate the stability of patronage bonds over time. To do so, it explores why the less pronounced politicization of civil service careers in Pakistan appears to hold more negative effects than in Iran, where patronage bonds display heightened stability over time
Information about immigrants' deservingness reduces misperceptions and opposition to immigration
International audienceAnti-immigration attitudes remain widespread across Western societies, raising concerns for social cohesion. This study investigates whether correcting misperceptions about immigrants' perceived deservingness—using cues such as intent to contribute and efforts to overcome socioeconomic challenges—can counter anti-immigration prejudice. In study 1 (n = 480), a factorial survey experiment showed that low-status immigrants were viewed more favorably when they exhibited deservingness traits. Studies 2a (n = 1,506) and 2b (n = 1,255), conducted as 1-week longitudinal studies during the 2024 European and French parliamentary elections, revealed that an information treatment emphasizing deservingness cues strongly reduced misperceptions about immigrants, modestly reduced opposition to immigration, and had a smaller effect for anti-immigration voting. These findings suggest that while immigrants are often perceived negatively, emphasizing perceived deservingness can mitigate prejudice, presenting a promising strategy for reducing anti-immigration bias
