Caste, Social Justice, and the Politics of Inclusion in the 2024 Indian General Election

    No full text
International audienceThis paper delves into caste as one of the defining issues of the 2024 Indian General Elections, as the two contending alliances—the Indian National Congress (INC)-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)—made competing claims about their inclusive character. While INDIA foregrounded caste as a central factor in the pursuit of social justice, the NDA’s idea of inclusivity focused on political inclusion through the representation and integration of Hindu castes under a common religious and ethnic umbrella. INDIA emulated NDA’s strategy of courting non-dominant segments of voters by including a larger number of lower caste candidates on their list while keeping some space for representation of religious minorities. The author argues that if INDIA ended up beating the NDA in the game of inclusion, both alliances’ efforts remained limited by longstanding features of Indian electoral politics that go against more substantive forms of political inclusion. The representation of minorities and women within non-NDA parties keeps decreasing, and the data on assets reveals that competitive pressure still pushes political parties to favor independently wealthy candidates

Par effraction. Rendre visible la question animale

    No full text

    No full text

Immigrant-native pay gap driven by lack of access to high-paying jobs

    No full text
International audienceImmigrants to high-income countries often face considerable and persistent difficulties in the labour market, whereas their native-born children typically experience economic progress. However, little is known about the extent to which these immigrant–native earnings differences stem from unequal pay when doing the same work for the same employer versus labour market processes that sort immigrants into lower-paid jobs. Here, using data from nine European and North American countries, we show that the segregation of workers with immigrant backgrounds into lower-paying jobs accounts for about three-quarters of overall immigrant–native earnings differences. Although within-job pay inequality remains notable for immigrants in several countries, our results demonstrate that unequal access to higher-paying jobs is the primary driver of the immigrant–native pay gap across a range of institutionally and demographically diverse contexts. These findings highlight the importance of policies aimed at reducing between-job segregation, such as language training, job training, job search assistance programmes, improving access to domestic education, recognizing foreign qualifications, and settlement programmes aimed at enhancing access to job-relevant information and networks. Policies that target employer bias in hiring and promotion decisions are also likely to be effective, whereas measures aimed at ensuring equal pay for equal work may have more limited scope for further progress in closing the immigrant–native pay gap

    No full text

Telehealth abortion services via Women on Web in Kenya (2013–2019): a descriptive analysis of the characteristics and motivations of the care seekers

    No full text
International audienceIn Kenya, access to abortion is legally restricted and allowed under a limited set of conditions. Teleabortion service providers, such as Women on Web (WoW), provide safe and effective abortion care outside the formal health sector. This study explores the characteristics and motivations of individuals in Kenya who completed an online consultation on the WoW website in 2013-2019. We used anonymised data provided by WoW to describe participants' characteristics (n=857) and their motivations for accessing the WoW online consultation (n=449, since this information was only available for those who filled out the questionnaire from December 2017). Participants' median age was 23; 65.0% did not have children, and 80.9% had not had a previous abortion. Pregnancies were caused by failure (43.6%) or absence of contraceptive method (49.0%), or rape (6.0%). The most frequently reported reasons for accessing the online consultation were legal restrictions and abortion costs. Those were selected by about half the participants (respectively 235 and 222/449). Next came the wish to keep the abortion private or secret, which was selected by 34.5% and 26.0% of participants. Among more positively framed reasons, home comfort came first (23.6%), followed by wanting to deal with the abortion oneself (20.7%) and finding an abortion through WoW empowering (17.4%). Abortion-seekers turning to teleabortion services usually do so following failing or absent contraception and to get access to safe abortions, avoid stigma, and keep their privacy. Expansion of teleabortion services, within or outside formal healthcare services, could strengthen abortion-seekers' autonomy and agency in Kenya

    No full text

Disambiguation of Implicit Scientific References on X

    No full text
International audienceScientific discourse on the social web has been shown to compromise the accuracy of scientific findings. Complex scientific claims are uttered in the form of short snippets with "implicit references" (seen as references to scientific publications where the URLs to the actual studies are never cited). This has led to uninformed online scientific debates on topics such as health pandemics or climate. To enhance social media content, we introduce in this paper the novel task of disambiguation of implicit scientific references, where the goal is to retrieve the original scientific publications implicitly referred to by social media users. We contribute the first formalization, ground-truth corpus, and baselines for the task. With this work, we aim at shaping an understanding of implicit references on social media, and at laying a foundation for developing and evaluating methods for the disambiguation of implicit references
