More precisely, it is a matter of observing his vision of Germany in The paper man but also in In memory of a woman, Parallels, The Crus of the Esplanada, The bad mother through his personal trajectory of resident in Germany until 1945 then observer for the media. We will thus see to what extent he carries out his Geschichtsbewältigung, if his vision of Germany is archaic or updated throughout his work. Life-Cycle Wage Growth and Firm Productivity in Developed and Developing Economics

    No full text
Updated version August 2025 (original version: April 2025)Life-cycle wage growth varies significantly across countries. We examine the role of the local distribution of firm productivity in shaping life-cycle wages by introducing a random search model that disentangles the effects of firm productivity distribution, on-the-job learning, and labor market frictions. Estimates of the model for Brazil, Colombia, and the United States suggest that the shape and scale of the firm-type distribution are key factors in explaining life-cycle wage growth. Counterfactual simulations suggest that equating the firm-type distribution in Brazil and Colombia to that of the United States would substantially reduce the cross-country gap in workers’ life cycle wage trajectories

AI-Enhanced Deliberative Democracy and the Future of the Collective Will

    No full text
This article unpacks the design choices behind longstanding and newly proposed computational frameworks aimed at finding common grounds across collective preferences and examines their potential future impacts, both technically and normatively. It begins by situating AI-assisted preference elicitation within the historical role of opinion polls, emphasizing that preferences are shaped by the decision-making context and are seldom objectively captured. With that caveat in mind, we explore AI-based democratic innovations as discovery tools for fostering reasonable representations of a collective will, sense-making, and agreement-seeking. At the same time, we caution against dangerously misguided uses, such as enabling binding decisions, fostering gradual disempowerment or post-rationalizing political outcomes

Industrial Policy in Disguise: The French Treasury and the Reregulation of the European Insurance Sector

    No full text
International audienceIn December 2023, the European Parliament and the Council reached an agreement to revise the Solvency II Directive, aiming to unlock €100 billion in private investment through a series of deregulatory measures. This marks a significant departure from the stringent insurance supervision framework that has shaped European policy since the financial crisis. Through detailed process tracing, this article examines the drivers behind this unexpected outcome and its broader implications for EU economic governance. Whilst this shift could be seen as part of the EU's growing prioritization of growth over stability, we argue that it is, above all, the result of France's sustained influence. Our findings suggest that the fragmented insurance industry played a limited role in the negotiations. Although the Commission actively promoted the Capital Markets Union and investment in the green transition, it largely acted as a reactive and pragmatic policy-maker. Instead, we show that the reregulation of the European insurance sector was primarily driven by the sustained efforts of the French Treasury. However, rather than pushing for wholesale deregulation, French policy-makers leveraged the Solvency II review to advance a cohesive asset-led growth strategy at homemotivated by a desire for greater economic sovereignty through the inflow of liquidity into national companies. Taken together, these findings shed new light on EU financial regulation in the post-Covid era, the evolving tension between the EU's interventionist shift and the rise of state activism and France's role in shaping European economic governance

Electoral participation and satisfaction with democracy in Central and Eastern Europe

    No full text
International audienceDoes democratic satisfaction drive voter turnout, or does voting increase satisfaction with democracy? This paper explores the satisfaction-participation nexus in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), where democratic dissatisfaction is prominent. It tests preregistered hypotheses using a five-wave panel survey from the Czech 2023 presidential election and a pooled dataset from five CEE countries. Unlike previous studies from Western Europe, it finds evidence for both mechanisms: pre-election satisfaction correlates with participation, but, simultaneously, voters experience a stronger election-related increase in satisfaction than abstainers. Further analyses reveal that the strong increases in satisfaction are driven by election winners and begin already during the election campaign. Our findings highlight the specificities of the satisfaction-participation link and elections’ legitimizing effects in newer democracies

    No full text
