Mapping benthic biodiversity indicators of coral reefs using spatial interpolation

    No full text
International audienceThe spatialization of essential biodiversity variables is a crucial step when assessing coral reef health. However, few studies proposed a comprehensive method for a large-scale assessment. This requires a trade-off between the area, the study time, and the number of sampled stations needed to achieve spatial interpolations at an acceptable human and financial cost. Rapid assessment methodsappear to be well suited for that. In this study, 2,599 circular plots per 100 m 2 were sampled to assess nine visual benthic biodiversity indicators on Reunion Island (fringing reefs). The nine benthic biodiversity indicators were selected from the scientific literature, to characterize the structure and the vitality of benthic communities, as well as their resilience and resistance mechanisms. A stratified sampling plan was defined according to four sites, two zones (outer slope and reef flat) and 14 habitats. We first demonstrated that the sampling effort enabled statistical discrimination and spatialization of the nine benthic biodiversity indicators in all landscape units (site, zone, habitat). We then investigated the limits of spatial model reliability by reducing sampling effort at an increasing proportion of stations. Densities of 0.5 to 1.2 stations.ha −1 (outer slopes) and 1.5 to 4.3 stations.ha −1 (reef flats) provided good to excellent spatialization of the benthic biodiversity indicators. Depending on objectives, level of resolution and available resources, this method could be used to define the sampling effort required to map benthic biodiversity indicators on coral reefs using spatial interpolation and realistic sampling effort.

    No full text

International audienceChinese Students in Europe and the Party-State -- Why do some Chinese students who choose to study abroad get involved in pro-regime organisations? How does this reflect the efforts of the People’s Republic of China to foster relationships of dependence and allegiance with its overseas nationals? Fieldwork conducted within branches of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in France and the United Kingdom sheds light on the drivers of this form of long-distance authoritarian commitment. An analysis of how the association operates in two different European countries reveals how it adapts to the local environment while functioning as an enclave, isolated from host societies. The organisation’s primary objective is to maintain the Chinese partystate’s hold over its nationals outside national borders rather than influence or develop ties with foreign societies. However, students do not passively allow themselves to be co-opted, and the many pressures they experience can hinder efforts to mobilise them in support of the regime.

Is Cinema Becoming Less and Less Innovative With Time? Using neural network text embedding model to measure cultural innovation

    No full text
International audienceCurrent discourse reflects a growing skepticism towards contemporary popular culture, specifically therealm of cinema, with an emerging consensus that its creative capacity is on a waning trajectory. Thisstudy introduces a novel approach which employs natural language processing techniques and embed-ding methods to measure semantic novelty of cultural items’ descriptions. We apply this methodologyto cinema, analyzing plot summaries of over 19,000 movies from the United-States spanning more thana century. Our measure’s robustness is validated through a series of tests, including a fit with a genre-based novelty score, a manual inspection of films identified as highly innovative, and correlations withaward recognitions. The application of our Innovation Score reveals a compelling pattern: an increasein the rate of cinematic innovation throughout the 20th century, followed by a stabilization in the rateof innovation in the 21st, despite an ever-growing production of films. Contrary to the often-voicedlament that cinema is losing its innovative edge, our study suggests that the level of innovativeness incinema is not in decline

In this study we examine the ideological drivers of online mobilization through e-petition sharing on X, in five EU countries. Using a dataset of over 1.8 million users, we model the impact of attitudes toward political elites and economic ideology at both individual and group levels. Results show that mobilization is primarily explained by individual ideological orientations, which exert significant non-linear effects on the likelihood of mobilizing for e-petitions. In contrast, group-level average orientations have no influence, although divergence from these increases the likelihood of petition sharing, especially at ideological extremes. We identify three distinct high mobilization clusters: (i) centrist and left-populist users, who rally around anti-elite, anti-corruption petitions; (ii) pro-elite left users, who mobilize for redistribution and welfare policies; and (iii) pro-elite economic-right users, who tend to support petitions favoring tax cuts and market liberalism. Our findings reveal that the sharing of e-petitions on Social Media is influenced by both user-level characteristics, group-level ideological alignment, and other Social Media dynamics, underscoring the need for further research into the interplay of within-and between-group factors in online mobilization and the expression of political discontent through online political engagement in petitioning campaigns.

Prompt selection matters: enhancing text annotations for social sciences with large language models

    No full text
International audienceLarge Language Models have recently been applied to text annotation tasks from social sciences, equating or surpassing the performance of human workers at a fraction of the cost. However, very few inquiries in the social sciences have been made of the impact of prompt selection on labelling accuracy. In this study, we show that performance greatly varies between prompts, and we apply the method of automatic prompt optimization to systematically craft high quality prompts. We also provide the community with a simple, browser-based implementation of the method at https:// prompt-ultra. github. io/

The Epistemology of the Secret: International Law as Revelation

    No full text
International audienceIn this groundbreaking work, Jean d'Aspremont undertakes the first study of the epistemology of the secret of international law, which is a specific intellectual posture whereby international law is considered to be replete with secrets that international lawyers ought to reveal. In addition to arguing that the epistemology of the secret of international law is everywhere at work in international legal thought and practice, d'Aspremont demonstrates why this posture must be scrutinized, given how much it enables certain sayings, thoughts, perceptions and actions while simultaneously disabling others, making it complicit with the worst forms of capitalism, colonialism, racism, bourgeois ideology, phallocentrism, virilism and masculinism. This book should be read by anyone interested in how international law came to do what it does and why it must be rethought

    The Detective Approach

    No full text
The "detective approach" conceives of policy evaluation as an investigation with two objectives: to measure the effects of the policy under study and understand the mechanisms behind these effects. This approach uses mixed methods and is divided into five stages: the "crime", the mystery, the formulation of theoretical hypotheses, the investigation, and causal inference
