At Modal Age at Death, the Hazard Rate is Determined by its Derivative

    No full text
The relation between the hazard rate and its derivative at modal age at death, an equivalent towhich has been featured by Pollard (1991), Canudas-Romo (2008), Thatcher et al. (2010), andTuljapurkar and Edwards (2011), is presented as a handy tool in studying mortalitycompression in its period and cohort dimensions. Our analytical findings indicate birthcohorts to differ substantially from the period life tables with respect to the distribution ofdeaths around the mode. Empirical results support theoretical predictions and show thatpreviously reported effect of compression of deaths above the mode might be a feature ofperiod life tables and not of the cohort mortality schedules. Our results are also useful incomputing the modal age at death and sensitivity analysis

Gender differences in visitor motivation and satisfaction: the case of Golija-Studenica Biosphere Reserve, Serbia. eco.mont (Journal on Protected Mountain Areas Research and Management)|eco.mont Vol. 13 special issue 2021|

The UNESCO Golija-Studenica Biosphere Reserve (BR) is located in southwestern Serbia. Its captivating beauty, breath-taking landscape diversity, and preserved natural and cultural values make it one of the country’s most beautiful mountains. This paper aims to determine the differences in motivation and level of satisfaction with the tourism offer of Golija-Studenica BR based on the visitor’s gender. Motivation and satisfaction of 642 visitors to Golija-Studenica BR were analysed using factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and regression analysis. Research findings confirm that gender matters – there is a gender-based impact on the motivation and satisfaction of visitors. The paper makes both scientific and practical contributions. Thus far, insufficient attention has been given to researching motivation and satisfaction of visitors to biosphere reserves in Serbia. Therefore, this paper can serve as a scientific basis for future research, for the improvement of the tourism offer of Golija- Studenica BR with the aim of encouraging its diversity, and for the development of sustainable tourism in this destination

    Conditional Probabilistic Population Forecasting

    No full text
Since policy-makers often prefer to think in terms of alternative scenarios, the question has arisen as to whether it is possible to make conditionalpopulation forecasts in a probabilistic context. This paper shows that it isboth possible and useful to make these forecasts. We do this with two differentkinds of examples. The first is the probabilistic analog of deterministicscenario analysis. Conditional probabilistic scenario analysis is essentialfor policy-makers because it allows them to answer “what if” typequestions properly when outcomes are uncertain. The second is a newcategory that we call “future jump-off date forecasts”. Future jump-offdate forecasts are valuable because they show policy-makers the likelihoodthat crucial features of today’s forecasts will also be present in forecastsmade in the future

Future Fertility in Low Fertility Countries

    No full text
This paper discusses results of the global survey of experts on the future of low fertility in low-fertility countries. The survey was coordinated by the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital as a part of an effort to produce global argument- based population projections by age, sex and level of education. First we give an overview of fertility changes in major low-fertility regions. Next we outline main theoretical arguments and review a wide range of factors contributing to fertility change and variation in contemporary low-fertility settings. Subsequently, we present survey results based on 184 assessments of over 170 experts analysing 41 countries with currently low or around- replacement fertility and Israel. These experts provided forecasts of period total fertility rate (TFR) in 2030 and 2050, estimated 80% confidence interval of their forecast and assessed the validity and potential impact on fertility of 46 factors. We also compare expert-derived projections of the TFR trends with the forecasts formulated by the UN World Population Prospects in 2010. The survey results in combination with the feedback provided by the invited experts then serve as a basis for formulating a set of projection scenarios for all low fertility countries up until 2050, which are additionally expanded (in a simpler form) through 2200. We present these scenarios and discuss past changes in fertility differences by level of education and their potential future trends in main regions. Presented analyses and projections indicate that a global convergence of fertility to around replacement level, envisioned in the UN projections, appears unlikely. Continuing differentiation combined with partial convergence in fertility towards lower levels is suggested as a more plausible scenario, with East Asia (including China) as well as Russia expected to have sustained very low fertility below 1.5 through 2050

A unique piece of Old Kingdom art: the Funerary Stela of Sekhemka and Henutsen from Abusir South. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|

The excavations of the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in the spring of 2018 brought to light a remarkable stela (Exc. No. 1/AS104/2018) with an offering table scene and two engaged statues depicting a couple (Sekhemka and Henutsen). The object also contains a list of sacred oils and two offering formulae (the usual Htp-dj-nswt and an unparalleled one, Htp-dj-nTr). Moreover, the polychromy is partially preserved. The article presents the stela’s archaeological context and description, polychrome reconstruction and discussion concerning its dating and the social standing of its owners. In the context of Old Kingdom art, the stela is interpreted as a peculiar combination of elements pertinent to false doors and statues. Parallels which could help explain these features are scarce. This stela provides evidence for the origin of the false door in early Egyptian shrines, and the subsequent development of two distinct architectural forms, the false door and the statue shrine (naos)
