This paper describes the changes in the Austrian regional administration from 1918 to 1925, distinguishing four periods (before 1918, 1918–1920, 1920–1925, since 1925). Several problems were discussed during all these periods: The term ‘double track’ administration was criticised (as manipulatory), and the desired ‘democratisation’ of the administration stood against the idea of its (judicial) responsibility to parliament. Another problem was the uniformity of administration, which seemed difficult to secure. Due to the large number of public servants within the electorate, the future role of the public service was discussed controversially. Overall, the 1925 constitutional amendment that put an end to ‘double track’ administration has been wrongly overshadowed by the 1929 amendment that modified the role of the federal president
The metal sheet figurines from Byblos: evidence of an Egyptian import and adaptation. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
This paper considers some peculiar types of figurines found in Byblos, which are cut from a tiny, thin sheet of metal (copper alloy, silver, or gold). They represent human figures, mainly male, in a standing position. These figurines have been documented in various deposits in the acropolis of Byblos and their chronological range spans from 2100 to 1650 BC. Usually presented as a Gublite product, these figurines may actually be part of an Egyptian tradition, directly imported to Byblos and then developed and readapted locally. The evidence for an Egyptian import is provided by a foundation deposit discovered at Deir el- Bahri, in the mortuary complex of Montuhotep II (c. 2020 BC), which presents similar sheet metal figurines, but of clear Egyptian manufacture and conception
Battle Scenes from the Temple of Thutmose I in Qurna. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
A set of 16 block fragments can be distinguished amongst the reliefs from the temple of Thutmose I in Qurna, which was built by Hatshepsut for her father. The blocks are decorated with representations of at least two battle scenes with chariots. However, battle scenes with chariots are very rare in this period and known exclusively from small sets of blocks. This article presents a detailed account of the material in question and discusses its reconstruction and meaning

The Matrimonial Property Law in Vietnam 1858–1975 in the Mirror of the European Legal Development. Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 2 / 2020|
The development of Vietnamʹs legal system has been heavily influenced by invasions from China (178 BC–939 AC), France (1858–1954) and the United States (1954–1975). These invading forces applied their own regulations and administrative models to establish neocolonialism. Aside from direct European influence on Vietnamʹs legislative system, Eastern European socialist ideology has also played an essential role in shaping Vietnamese laws. This paper aims to describe the significant formative influences that Europe had on the Vietnamese legal system between 1858 and 1975. Specifically, this study focusses on the development of matrimonial property law
Sprachenvielfalt und Länderautonomie in Österreich-Cisleithanien. Ein schwieriges Verhältnis. Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 2 / 2020|
The essay describes the emergence and the sources of the law on languages as a very specific legal‐cultural phenomenon of the late Habsburg Monarchy, i.e. under the banner of the December Constitution. The many regulations concerning the languages which had to be used in administration, legislation and at the courts were an attempt of the Austrian state to defuse the ethnic struggle which threatened to disintegrate the Monarchy. However, it was an attempt which was thwarted by the autonomy of the “Länder” and even more so of the local communities. Especially the latter tried to establish uniform linguistic spaces within the respective municipalities. This kind of municipal language policy seriously aggravated the ethnic struggle in the Monarchy
