Singles in the city: happily ever after?. Vienna Yearbook of Population Research|Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2021|

More people than ever are living in cities, and in these cities, more and more people are living alone. Using the example of Vienna, this paper investigates the subjective well-being of single households in the city. Previous research has identified positive and negative aspects of living alone (e.g., increased freedom vs. missing social embeddedness). We compare single households with other household types using data from the Viennese Quality of Life Survey (1995–2018). In our analysis, we consider overall life satisfaction as well as selected dimensions of subjective wellbeing (i.e., housing, financial situation, main activity, family, social contacts, leisure time). Our findings show that the subjective well-being of single households in Vienna is high and quite stable over time. While single households are found to have lower life satisfaction than two-adult households, this result is mainly explained by singles reporting lower satisfaction with family life. Compared to households with children, singles are more satisfied with their financial situation, leisure time and housing, which helps to offset the negative consequences of missing family ties (in particular with regard to single parents)

Archaeobotanical Investigations at Punta di Zambrone (Calabria, Italy). Orea|Punta di Zambrone I Oriental and European Archaeology Volume 17|

The Bronze Age site of Punta di Zambrone, located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, southern Italy, was excavated between 2011 and 2013, accompanied by archaeobotanical investigations. Although sediments from the Early Bronze Age and the Recent Bronze Age were uncovered, none of the sediments belong to the Middle Bronze Age. It was possible to investigate more than 200 samples for charred plant remains. They shed light on the crop assemblages, gathered wild plants and plant species from the surroundings in both phases and the significant difference between them. During the Bronze Age emmer is the main crop. The change from the Early to the Recent Bronze Age layers is observable in a strongly increasing proportion of broomcorn millet. The archaeologically established Aegean contacts in the Recent Bronze Age confirmed by ceramics and artefacts is not visible in the characteristic spectrum of useful plants with mainly emmer and pulses, dominated by field bean

Pope Sylvester I (314-335) became an important figure in the political history of early medieval Italy. His legendary relationship with Constantine I (306-337), the first Christian emperor, played a significant role in establishing his ideological prominence. Declared a saint of the early Roman Church, Sylvester’s relics did not gain much attention until the middle of the eighth century, when they became a source of competition. On the one hand, Roman popes venerated his body in the monastery of St Stephen and St Sylvester, founded by Pope Paul I around 760 inside the Eternal City; on the other hand, the Lombard king Aistulf and his brother-in-law, Abbot Anselm, claimed to have brought Sylvester’s relics north, in order to have them buried in Anselm’s newly founded monastery of Nonantola in the Po Valley. Scholars would appear to have overlooked this major issue when investigating the relationship between Lombard elite society and Roman popes in the eighth century. This article will therefore consider the dates, forms, and narratives of the translatio of St Sylvester in order to evaluate Nonantola’s political and ideological involvement in this »holy« movement. The main argument is that through the »journey« of Sylvester’s relics within the Lombard kingdom, King Aistulf was able to increase his prestige and political influence. For its part, Nonantola rewrote the history of its origins by centring it on the relics of the Constantinian pontiff and those of Pope Hadrian I, in order to claim political and spiritual primacy throughout the medieval period
