From Exception to Norm? Analysing Gated Housing in Sofia and Kiev since 1989. Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft|Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft - Band 162<br/>(Annals of the Austrian Geographical Society - Volume 162)|
Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 it is time to start a broader reflection on one of the most debated types of housing in Eastern European urban studies. Gated housing was almost unknown in the 1990s but started spreading rapidly at the end of the 2000s in different Eastern European and Post-Soviet countries. However, the 2008–2009 global financial crisis led to a sharp decrease in housing construction in general and of gated communities in particular. In recent years, housing construction as well as housing prices have increased again. Gated communities are part of this recovery. Instead of providing insights from a certain period of boom or crisis, this paper looks at three decades of housing production in general and gated communities in particular. It tries to uncover the institutional and economic background of housing development over the last 30 years. Moreover, it relates these developments to two (South)-Eastern European capital cities (Sofia and Kiev [Kyiv]) and their pathways of housing and gated community production. We focus on politico-economic and socio-spatial relationalities in these two different context conditions and scrutinise why and how gated communities emerged as well as how supply and demand changed over time. Both cases represent rather peripheral, capitalist economies concerning their national background. However, both cases are capital cities, which absorb the majority of capital investment. The polarisation and concentration of political and economic power structures lead us to discuss different actor-constellations regarding this on-going flight to privatopia, reflecting on the role of urban planning as well as glocal housing markets. Last but not least, this paper shows that gated communities are “urban assemblages” of wider processes of peripherialisation
Language Mixing as a Persuasive Strategy in Oxford, MS Bodley 649. Medieval Worlds|Movement and Mobility & Ideologies of Translation, III - Volume 13. 2021 medieval worlds Volume 13. 2021|
One of the salient features of Oxford, MS Bodley 649, a fifteenth-century sermon collection, is its frequent switching from Latin to English – and back to Latin again. Building on Wenzel’s (1994) groundbreaking work on macaronic sermons, I discuss the rhetorical characteristics of English elements in MS Bodley 649, with the purpose of showing that language mixing in this collection is not random but rather one of the rhetorical devices that the author uses for persuasion. The English elements are frequently used to build grammatical cohesion through structural parallelism. Also, lexical and semantic cohesion are achieved via repetition of the same words in both languages or through English paraphrases of Latin scriptural content. Alliteration, another rhetorical device, often coincides with language switches within the sermons. I hope to show that, together with other rhetorical strategies, mixing English into Latin constitutes one means within an entire bundle of linguistic devices that all contribute to the persuasive purpose of the genre. As a preliminary finding of some work in progress, I report on the nature of the English words mixed into these highly scholastic and often allegorical sermons. The English elements within the sermons tend to provide content that is mundane, or objectionable (from the point of view of Christian conduct and goals), or even merely negative (if not repulsive). An important conclusion is that none of the rhetorical strategies that overlap with code-switching into English are used mechanically and systematically by the sermonist; the coincidence of the bundled persuasive features is never predictable. However, this does not mean that mixing English elements into Latin in MS Bodley 649 should be characterized as random. A persuasive sermon is not tamely predictable in its delivery; it must offer surprises as audience-engagement strategies. The most salient surprises in MS Bodley 649 are provided by the English elements
URBANINFRA
Simulation phantoms are a subclass of models. They serve to learn a demanding (medical)skill. The l’oeil artificiel ophthalmoscopique, developed in 1866 by the French surgeonMaurice Perrin (1826–1889), is regarded as the first ophthalmoscopy phantom that comesquite close to imitating the natural conditions of the eye during mirroring. Such phantoms aredeveloped in order to support the learner to operate e. g. the hand-held-ophthalmoscope. Intensivepractice on the phantom gives the budding physician more confidence in the future use ofthe mirror in a real doctor-patient ophthalmoscopy situation. Perrin’s phantom was especiallyused to train military doctors in coping with the instrument and to analyse refractive errors. However, 19th century specialists showed only little interest in this kind of skill-training for theophthalmologist-to-be
Evaluation of a NoSQL Database for Storing Big Geospatial Raster Data. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 1|
Database systems capable of efficiently storing geospatial data are widespread. However, recent developments in earth observation systems, remote sensing, mobile mapping, and crowd sourcing lead to large amounts of geospatial mass data that can hardly be handled efficiently with the existing solutions. Especially large geospatial raster data require novel concepts for well-organized data storage. A concept for storage of large geospatially and temporally referenced image data using the NoSQL graph database system Neo4j as a research subject of the project “RiverView®” is introduced. New strategies and access structures have been developed to ensure the persistence and performant access to image data in Neo4j. These strategies are compared with the up-and download performance of the widespread Rasdaman array database system
Labour Market Profile, Previous Employment and Economic Integration of Refugees: An Austrian Case Study
In 2015, large numbers of forced migrants crossed the borders to the European Union and the influx of new arrivals has led to the important question of implications for the host societies. This article assesses the labour market profile and previous employment of the recent inflows of displaced persons, mainly coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Moreover, sectoral unemployment rates and trends in job openings in different economic branches in the host society are compared to the profiles of the refugee population. Analyses are based on two unique datasets on displaced persons in Austria: DiPAS (a social survey among asylum seekers) and competence checks (information on occupational and transferable skills). Results indicate that the labour supply provided by refugees’ roughly corresponds to the labour demand in Austria. In terms of a potential impact on the Austrian labour market, this match might be regarded as favourable
