Analysis of a Recent Bronze Age Amber Bead Fragment from the Site Punta di Zambrone. Orea|Punta di Zambrone I Oriental and European Archaeology Volume 17|

    No full text
A fragment of an amber bead from the Punta di Zambrone site was analysed to find out the geographic origin of the raw material. The material was identified as succinite, a material, which in prehistory, could only be found on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Sicilian amber (Simetite) can be ruled out. Using fluorescence microscopy, corroded surfaces, which are a result of stratification in the soil, could be distinguished from modern fracture surfaces

This article introduces the themed section »Movement and Mobility in the Medieval Mediterranean: Changing Perspectives from Late Antiquity to the Long-Twelfth Century«. This series of articles engages with the ongoing debates in historiography on the role of movement and mobility in the socio-political frameworks of medieval societies throughout the Mediterranean world from Iberia to the Near East. The papers introduced here consider a wide range of contacts and exchange from the diplomatic encounters of late antique Byzantium via the exchange of (religious) ideas and spiritual objects in Italy and the Near East to the fundamental mobility of capital, slaves and goods. Rather than reveal a static, ossified and self-contained range of landscapes, this article will argue that there were not only cross-cultural, religious and political contacts but also economic and social connections that fused the Medieval Mediterranean into a heterogenous contact zone of cultures, ideas and products. Using this broader framework of the Mediterranean as a contact zone and border region between and across the longue durée represented by the period from Late Antiquity until the end of the twelfth century allows the contributions to demonstrate movement, not stasis after Rome and the expansion of horizons rather than their restriction

While Iliad 10,251–253 has often been translated correctly, Odyssey 12,312 (≈14,483) has not fared nearly as well, although the meaning is basically the same. Whether this means that the author of Iliad 10 improved on the Odyssey or not, Odyssey 12,312 is best understood as meaning “But when it was the third part of the night and the stars had already completed a considerable part of their paths.” In the second part of this article it is argued that τείρεα in Iliad 18,485 means not all stars or constellations, but just the most conspicuous ones, which explains why in Iliad 18,487–489 = Odyssey 5,273–275 it is asserted that only the Great Bear is barred from bathing in the ocean, a problem already debated in antiquity: the seven stars of Ursa maior forming the Big Dipper constitute the only conspicuous group of stars which was circumpolar in archaic Greece. The latter theory, an overlooked explanation of Walter Leaf, can be supported by further evidence

In the years following the foundation of the Styrian Eisenwurzen Nature Park (in 1996) and Gesäuse National Park (in 2002), both nature conservation organizations faced heavy resistance from the local population and actors in the local economy. Today things look different: the so-called Gesäuse Partners are building a strong network that brings the parties together. Our experiences can be used practically by the managers of protected areas

The “Homoeopathy-Archive” of the Institute for the History of Medicine, Stuttgart, possessestwo different types of homeopathic medical kits which were produced especially during theFirst and Second World War. These small pharmacies were supposed to supply soldiers withhomeopathic remedies which they could use in cases of emergencies and as self-help. In comparingthese objects questions are answered regarding the production of these kits and theirdifferent features. This also sheds light on mechanisms in the medical and pharmaceuticalmarket as well as practices of self-medication under extreme conditions

Moulages – wax sculptures of pathologically altered body parts – were a popular teaching aidin dermatological training in the first half of the 20th century. In view of the threatening situationin a world highly armed with poisonous gas, it was an obvious step to include this establishedobject of training before and during the Second World War in military medical training onwarfare agent injuries. The work focuses on the twelve warfare agent moulages of the Departmentof Dermatology at the University Hospital Würzburg, their production circumstances andlater usage in the Medical Academy of the Air Force (Ärztliche Akademie der Luftwaffe) inWürzburg are to be investigated. The cooperation between the successful Mouleur Fritz Kolbowand the Wehrmacht toxicologist Otto Muntsch is of particular importance for the production ofthe warfare agent moulages. The comparison with other warfare agent moulages in the German-speakingarea as well as an illumination of the teaching possibilities offered by warfare agentmoulages due to continued use of warfare agents nowadays are further perspectives of thisproject

Jacobus de Saraponte’s Aurissa: Evidence for Multilingual Preaching. Medieval Worlds|Movement and Mobility & Ideologies of Translation, III - Volume 13. 2021 medieval worlds Volume 13. 2021|

One of the key questions of sermon studies on medieval multilingual sermons is whether – and to what extent – multilingual preaching actually occurred. The unpublished and little-known medieval art of preaching Aurissa, composed by Jacobus de Saraponte in the 14th century, provides unique insights into this issue. This study reconstructs the original composition of the work that was unknown until now. The article argues that the treatise consisted of three parts: the main treatise Theologia est sciencia (the only part described as Aurissa in the past), an additional chapter on preaching in the chapter and a list of rhymed words grouped thematically called the Quadrangulum. The study then provides an overview of the main 33 chapters, focusing on the peculiar terminology of the treatise, especially so-called notabilitates and the ways in which they can be extracted from the thema of the sermon. This leads to the main part of the article, which discusses the advice on the use of various languages. Jacobus de Saraponte provides detailed instruction on which languages should be used in different parts of the sermon (thema, initial prayer, notabilitates, conclusion) with regard to different audiences. Most notably, he mentions the possibility of mixed sermons. This type is described especially in his detailed advice regarding preaching in the chapter. Finally, the study investigates traces in the manuscripts showing how they were used. The conclusion discusses the degree to which the advice by Jacobus de Saraponte can be taken as evidence for so-called macaronic preaching, i.e., the type of preaching where languages would be mixed seemingly randomly within sentences
