    The Destruction of Late Bronze Age Hazor. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|

    Hazor was one of the most important city states in the Late Bronze Age southern Levant and its fiercely final destruction has been of central scholarly interest for decades. Here, we present a novel perspective, which integrates multiple aspects for the end of Late Bronze Age Hazor. Our results show the complexity of Hazor’s end by integrating the stratigraphic analysis and comprehensive radiocarbon dating together with the study of local, Aegean-type and Egyptian objects from the recent decades of excavation at the site. Ultimately, we offer two different possible scenarios for the destruction of Hazor with regard to the date and the processes that led to the destruction

    Road mortality is one of the most obvious forms of anthropic impact upon fauna. The Iron Gates Natural Park is an area of great biodiversity, crossed by a 154 km long road running parallel to the Danube River. To estimate the impact of this road upon the fauna, between March 2019 and February 2020 we monitored road mortality on a monthly basis. We recorded 13,230 road-killed animals, belonging to 71 taxa. The greatest proportion of taxa was killed in early summer and the number of individuals killed peaked in autumn. A spring mortality peak was not observed. Cold-blooded animals were killed year-round, even though they should not have been active in winter in Romania. This is a consequence of the warmer climate of the region compared to the rest of Romania, but also the mild winter of 2019 / 2020. Mitigation measures such as stopping the construction of new roads would prevent the problem of animal road deaths being replicated in other areas. In addition to the ecological, zoogeographical and conservation value of its findings, our study also warns of a cause-effect link between global warming and an increase in road mortality

    Application of Land Surface Temperature Analysis in Urban Green Spaces: Case Studies from South Asia. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 2|

    This paper demonstrates the use of remote sensing in planning urban green spaces (UGSs). UGSs emerged as a popular solution to combat the effects of Urban Heat Island, especially in tropical cities. UGS projects often need to identify priority implementation areas due to limited funding for UGSs. This study includes two Asian cities, namely Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Chittagong (Bangladesh). It is not comparative, but it has identified priority administrative areas for future UGSs in both cities. We used Landsat 8 data and the remote sensing technique Land Surface Temperature (LST) analysis using radiance, temperature brightness and emissivity. LST data were then intersected with the administrative boundaries of the study areas. The identification of priority administrative areas for UGS considered both the area coverage and the percentage of coverage in terms of maximum LST within the administrative units’ boundaries. The result found 8 and 10 administrative units to be hotspots for UGSs, for Phnom Penh and Chittagong respectively. The proposed method will be useful to both government and non-government organizations alike, especially in tropical countries.Smart cities, despite their supposed benefits, also pose challenges to inhabitants. The promised improvements of quality of life, sustainability and efficiency are accompanied by a lack of data security and privacy, and a loss of spontaneous and chaotic but enjoyable urban life

    The Late Bronze Age presents a peak in the cultural interactions between the different empires of the ancient Near East. Bulk goods and small quantities of luxury products were exchanged between the kings and the local elite over long distances. During the 2019 excavation campaign, such a luxury item was discovered at the site of Pyla-Kokkinokremos in Cyprus: an Egyptian calcite-alabaster drop jar incised with geometric and floral decorations.     Per capita GDP has limited use as a well-being indicator because it does notcapture many dimensions that imply a “good life”, such as health and equality ofopportunity. However, per capita GDP has the virtues of being easy to interpret andto calculate with manageable data requirements. Against this backdrop, there is aneed for a measure of well-being that preserves the advantages of per capita GDP,but also includes health and equality. We propose a new parsimonious indicatorto fill this gap, and calculate it for 149 countries. This new indicator could beparticularly useful in complementing standard well-being indicators during theCOVID-19 pandemic. This is because (i) COVID-19 predominantly affects olderadults beyond their prime working ages whose mortality and morbidity do notstrongly affect GDP, and (ii) COVID-19 is known to have large effects on inequalityin many countries
