Students’ Learning Engagement in Writing Class: A Task-Based Learning
Get PDFStudents’ degree of interest, attention, and curiosity are some indications of students’ learning engagement which are very important to be noted down by every teacher. Knowing what makes students focused on what they are learning or doing in the class will be a great assistance for teacher in creating meaningful activities which at the end promotes their engagement and motivation. This study was intended to find out students’ learning engagement during a writing class which was designed as a task based learning. The students were assigned to some collaborative activities in composing writings. The researcher observed students’ activities especially during the pre and while writing and found out that one reason among others that made students unable to actively engaged at the beginning of the activity was failing to understand the teacher’s instructions. This problem, however, was solved once they understood the tasks clearly and able to enjoy what they were doing in class. In other words, students’ engagement could happen if the activities are meaningful for them
The Developed Relations between Social Class and Language in United Kingdom and United State of America
Get PDFThere has been an arising issue related to the correlation between language and social among social communities in United Kingdom and America. Both of the social communities usually employ different language varieties which are in accordance to the position of social class. In England, the higher social community tends to use Received Pronunciation while the lower social community tends to use estuary accent. On the other hand, in America, the higher social community tends to use Standard English while the lower social community tends to use African American English. The present study primarily focuses on the relationship between language and social class in United Kingdom and America in which the association of the language and social class is described qualitatively through reviewing any literatures related to the aforementioned issue. After examining the data, it is showed that, nowadays, even though Received Pronunciation is considered as the standard English in United Kingdom, the speakers of the language are only 3%. Furthermore, the Estuary accent is now used by the broadcasting station even though in the past they only used the Received Pronunciation. In addition, African American Language, which is considered as the language of lower social class, in the present day is also used by white people as upper class in Americ
Functions of Code-switching in Young Moroccans’ Facebook Comments
Get PDFThis study investigates, through a qualitative approach, code-switching practices of young Moroccans in their Facebook interactions. The purpose behind this research is to analyse the functions of code-switching in Facebook comments, that were extracted from 30 Facebook accounts, and find out whether the choice of switching between languages is a conscious act that serves certain communicative functions, or it is a random choice made by young Moroccan Facebook users to compensate for a linguistic incompetence. Functions were coded and analysed using a grounded theory. Results achieved through the analysis of code-switching functions that occurred in the participants’ Facebook comments revealed that code-switching appeared, mainly, to serve notions of quotation, addressee specification, availability, principle of economy, indicating emotions, clarification, emphasis, habitual expressions, creativity and euphemism. Therefore, code-switching in young Moroccans’ Facebook comments is considered as a communication strategy that aims at enhancing their interactions in Facebook and making them more fluid and vibrant
Morphosyntactic Analysis of Political News on Online Tempo
Get PDFMorphology and Syntax are very important studies in learning English. Morphology learns about how the words are structured and how they are put together from smaller part. It can be considered as the grammar of words. Meanwhile, Syntax discusses how the sentence is structured. The objectives of the research are to find out inflectional morphemes, derivational morphemes, and the patterns of clause structure which are found in political news on online Tempo in January 2019. This research used qualitative design and content analysis design where the source of data was article political news on Online Tempo in January, 2019. The major instrument of this research is the researchers themselves because they actively obtained and clustered the data and the secondary data was data sheet. The findings revealed three types of morphosyntactic, firstly, the researchers found 5 patterns of inflectional morpheme with 26 words. The most dominant pattern of inflectional morpheme was singular changing to the plural. Secondly, for derivational morpheme, it identified two types of classes including class-changing and class-mantaining. There were 3 patterns with 10 words in class-changing and 1 pattern with 1 word in class-mantaining. The study also showed that the common pattern of derivational morpheme was class-changing pattern (verb to noun). Thirdly, there were 7 patterns with 15 clauses that were used in political news. The result of this study proved that the dominant pattern of clause structure was S-V- to Infinitive pattern with 4 clauses

One of the discourses which analyze about feminist sees how is the position of subject-object and the viewers on Shopee 12:12 birthday sale advertisement, then it will reveal the discourse which will be shown to the public to know the woman’s construction and to explain the pattern of woman’s construction through some scenes on Shopee 12:12 birthday sale advertisement. The focus of this research is the formulation used to analyze an advertising discourse whether it is a critical discourse or not
Pragmatic Failure in the Subtitles of Moonlight Movie
Get PDFThis paper aims to find out the types of pragmatic failures that can lead to incorrect understanding of meaning by the audience. Pragmatic failure in translation consists of two failures, namely: pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. Pragmalinguistic failures in translation are analyzed using speech act theory proposed by Searle and deixis theory proposed by Levinson. Sociopragmatic failures in translation are analyzed using the principle of cooperation theory proposed by Grice and the principle of politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. One hundred seventy-six pragmatic failures are found in the subtitles of Moonlight movie, which is divided into one hundred thirty-six pragmalinguistic failures and forty sociopragmatic failures. Pragmalinguistic failures that occur are the failures to transfer speech acts and deixis of oral speech into subtitles. Sociopragmatic failures that occur are the failures to transfer principle of cooperation of oral speech into subtitles
Speech Acts of Requests: A Case of Indonesian EFL Learners
Get PDFThis study sheds light on the delineation of the most frequently used request strategies as realized by Indonesian EFL learners and their reasons of utilizing such strategies. A descriptive qualitative study was employed by involving forty (40) English learners of a university at Surakarta as the participants. The data were gathered by means of DCT-questionnaire, Role-plays, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The obtained data were descriptively analyzed by referring to Blum-Kulka and Olshtain’s Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP) followed by transcribing the result of FGD. The findings illustrated that Indonesian EFL learners made use of conventionally indirect request more frequently than other strategies. Furthermore, the FGD revealed that their reasons of employing conventionally indirect strategy were because of the cultural factors and the social distance between the interlocutors. As an effort to equip EFL learners with adequate pragmatic competence, this study offers some input enhancement both in terms of process (teaching activities) and in terms of product (realizing speech act of requests) for ELT practices in Indonesian context
An Ecological Perspective on Reading Development: a Theoretical Framework to Guide Empirical Research
Get PDFRecent efforts have addressed the new challenges related to conceptualizing, understanding and improving reading competency. Several literacy researchers have perceived reading as a developmental skill that is not situated exclusively within student’s cognition, or within family processes, or within classroom or school processes. Rather, reading development has been viewed as a result of the dynamic interaction among reader, family, classroom, and school system (Jaeger, 2017). Following on from this, systems theory approach and more specifically the ecological model allows for the examination of reading skill development from a holistic perspective. It provides an inclusive frame for describing and explaining how the educational opportunities are distributed at the micro, meso, exo, and macro systems and how these systems interact to explain students’ reading differences amon. It also delineates how developing readers’ individual characteristics transact with both proximal and distal processes to craft their reading ecologies. Future policy, practice and research are recommended to be based on the ecological model premises to have a comprehensive view of reading development
Utilizing Digital Comics in College Students’ Grammar Class
Get PDFThe utilization of digital comics in this pandemic situation may become a valuable solution. In fact, many challenges and obstacles faced by students regarding the implementation of online learning. This research aimed at investigating the utilization of digital comics in college students’ online grammar class as well as students’ responses. The research design was practical action research which followed Mills’ model (Creswell, 2012). The participants were 36 nursing college students of a university in Lamongan. The instruments used were observation notes, questionnaire, and student-made comics (artifacts). Then, the data from observation notes and student-made comics were analyzed by Miles, Huberman, & Saldana’s (2014) framework for qualitative data analysis while the data from questionnaire were analyzed by using coding to draw conclusion. The results of the study indicated that (1) there are 4 (four) major steps in utilizing digital comics in grammar learning and (2) students showed positive responses to the utilization of digital comics in learning English grammar indicated by the results of questionnaire. It is expected that educators can take advantage of digital applications such as digital comic makers to deal with online classroom
Pragmatic Analysis of Flouting Maxim in Donald Trump’s Interview with TIME in the Oval Office 2020
Get PDFThe purpose of this research is to define a linguistic feature based on Donald Trump’s interview with TIME since Trump is a politician who has the power to influence others, and it can be extremely essential to analyze how the hidden meaning in his utterance images him as a public figure. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method because the object of the study is a transcript containing utterance and conversation. Grice's (1975) theory is used in this study to define the flouting maxim that occurs during the interview. The result of this study is that 11 utterances containing flouting maxim of quantity, 3 flouting the maxim of relation, 2 flouting the maxim of manner, and no flouting maxim of quality is found in this study. After analyzing the finding, the most dominant found types is flouting maxim of quantity which means that Trump frequently gives more information than required to express his interest and to show his power as a president and his nationalism as representative of American.
