Fosilni les Carapoxylon iz spodnjemiocenskih plasti pri Komendi
Pieces of fossil wood were discovered near Komenda from the Lower Miocene beds. According to microscopic wood anatomy it corresponds to the family Meliaceae and to the genus Carapoxylon. This is the first identification of Miocene hardwood from Slovenia. Fossil woods of genus Carapoxylon are most common in the Ottnangian to Badenian period in central
Europe (North Alpine Molasse Basin). The nearest living relatives of Carapoxylon belong to genus Carapa, Xylocarpus and Entandrophragma
The dendrochronological dating of wood from the site of Torčec - Gradić in northern Croatia
The article presents the results of dendrochronological analysis of wood samples collected during archaeological excavation of the medieval fortification of Gradić at Torčec in 2005 and 2007. The analysis has shown that all the dated samples belong to the same construction phase - Phase III, and that the wooden posts were built into the wooden construction of the fortification after 1263, which can be considered the terminus post quem

Capercaillie monitoring is an important tool for observing changes in boreal forest ecosystems, but introduction of a hunting ban in the Slovenian Alps has highlighted certain problems
In the light of changes in land use and natural forest structures within the habitats of capercaillie and other
grouse species within their European distribution range over the last four decades, we have investigated the
permanent decline in population densities of these species and their gradual disappearance along the latitudinal and altitudinal boundaries of their ranges. Regional differences in forest and hunting management systems and in the interpretation and application of the multipurpose use of forest ecosystems in diverse landscapes
throughout Europe, results in variations in the degree to which the natural forest biodiversity is preserved.
Capercaillie is classified as one of the key species for biodiversity control in maintaining multipurpose conatural
forest management in boreal and mountain forests of mixed coniferous trees: It has been recognized as
an indicator species for primary or secondary forests with natural form and structure and as an indicator of
various levels of biodiversity and conservation need. Capercaillie distribution and population density
monitoring is used as the main tool for monitoring the species’ forest ecosystems, together with landscapes
changes and habitat suitability (e.g. Eiberle 1984; Wegge 1985; Rolstad and Wegge 1987, 1989; Schroth 1995;
Beškarev et al. 1995; Čas 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006, Storch 1999, 2002, 2007, Klaus et al. 1997, Čas and
Adamič 1998, Angelstam 1999, 2004; Angelstam and Lazdinus 2000; Mikusinski et al. 2001, Angelstam and
Čas 2002; Perco 2002, Sjoberg and Ahlen 2002, Spidso et al. 2002, Sachot et al. 2003, 2006, Saniga 2004,
Pakkala et al. 2003, Suter et al. 2002, Menoni et al. 2002, Kutnar et al. 2005, Roberg and Angelstam 2006,
Duriez et al. 2007). Analyses of hunting statistics can only be used as general tools for monitoring the species’
population dynamics in countries with hunting in optimal parts of its range, or in countries where the species is
endangered and where no data is available on monitoring about endangerment and no protection laws
Bryophyte species diversity of forest ecosystems in Slovenia (intensive monitoring programe)
As part of the Intensive Monitoring Programme (IM) of Forest Ecosystems in Slovenia, the bryophyte flora and vegetation have been studied on 11 IM plots and 64 vegetation sub-plots (10*10 m). On the IM plots, high species diversityof bryophytes has been assessed. The total number of bryophytes was 109; among them 82 species belonging to the mosses (Bryophyta) and 27 species to the liverworts (Marchantiophyta). The mean number per plot was 27 species, ranging from 13 species on the Brdo plot to 36 species on the Borovec and Draga plots. The most common moss species are Hypnum cupressiforme, Ctenidium molluscum, Tortella tortuosa, Brachythecium velutinum, Isothecium alopecuroides, Dicranum scoparium, Polytrichum formosum, Fissidens taxifolius,F. dubius (Bryophyta); and liverworts are Radula complanata, Chiloscyphus profundus, Plagiochila porelloides and Metzgeria furcata (Marchantiophyta). Regarding the substrate preference, the opportunistic species that inhabit very different substrates are prevalent; and the second main group are bryophytes inhabiting wood material (epiphyte, epixylic species). Using multivariate techniques (cluster analysis, DCA), the bryophytes have proved to be valuable indicator of site conditions (bedrock, surface rockiness, soil type, micro- and regional climate, vegetation) and forest stand conditions (dominant tree species, dead wood)
Adsorption of coper-ethanolamine preservatives in wood
Copper-ethanolamine based preservatives are one of the most important wood preservatives for protection of wood in third and fourth use class. Despite the fact that they are commercially used for several years, complete mechanismof fixation in wood has been not resolved to date. It is clear that copper-ethanolamine system reacts with wood faster than copper-chromium based wood preservatives. It is not known, however, which parameters control this process of fixation and when it is finished. Influence of impregnation time, wood species (Norway spruce, beech), temperature and concentration of commercial copper-ethanolamine preservative solution Silvanolin on copper adsorption to wood particles is elucidated in this contribution. Concentrationof copper in wood particles was determined with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). The results confirmed that the reaction of copper-ethanolamine complexes in wood is a fast process. During the initial six hours of impregnation, between 60 and 80% of retained copper is adsorbed in wood. Copper adsorption is increasing with increasing concentration as well, and it can be significantly improved with impregnation at 50°C
Distribution of diatoms in spring in the Julian Alps (NW Slovenia)
DISTRIBUTION OF DIATOMS IN SPRINGS IN THE JULIAN ALPS (NW SLOVENIA) - In the Julian Alps (Slovenia), the diatom communities of 16 mountain springs were studied between May and October 1999. Four of them were sampled monthly for a more detailed investigation of seasonal changes in community structure. The sampling was performed by scraping of the rock surface. In all sampling stations, physical and chemical parameters were measured. The purpose of the work was qualitative assessment of the diatom communities. The diatom flora of these springs consisted of 60 diatom taxa and showed similarities with springs and headwater stream diatom communities from different geographic areas. Achnanthes minuttisima reached the highest relative abundance in most of the samples. Characteristic spring taxa (crenophiles) were present, but also included subdominant and rare taxa. Five different spring types were identified, with respect to diatom assemblages, using cluster analysis. Current velocity and periodical dryness in a spring appeared to be the dominant environmental factor affecting diatom distribution in selecting karst springs. In some springs, however, peculiar environmental factors (dim light, ionic strength) affected the structure of diatom assamblages.
