Entrepreneurship in wood economy and a proposition for an entrepreneurial model
Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial activity of the population are of key importance for economic development, creation of new jobs and rise of the public welfare level. Some general researches (for example GEM - Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) showed that the entrepreneurial potential in Slovenia has not been completely maximized. Considering the findings from the research into entrepreneurship in wood economy we can claim the same also for the domain of wood, since we discovered numerous opportunities that are not being used at the moment. Research was made in small wood-industry companies with the help of questionnaires. On the basis of the established facts, a modern, future and development-orientated entrepreneurial model was elaborated, which is based on internal and external factors of entrepreneurship efficiency. Entrepreneurial activity is based on constant, planned and goal orientated learning and transfer (and use) of this knowledge in the business process
Minimal fungicidal and fungistatic concentrations of boron compounds for wood remediation
Minimal remedial fungicidal concentrations of boric acid and copper sulphate pentahydrate for three brown (Gloeophyllum trabeum, Serpula lacrymans and Antrodia vaillantii) and three white rot (Trametes versicolor, Pleurotus ostreatus and Hypoxylon fragiforme) fungi were determined. Remedial efficacy was determined on infested spruce and beech wood specimens, which were immersed into selected copper- or boron-based preservative solutions for ten minutes. The treated specimens were transferred to nutrient medium and fungal growth was monitored. The results showed that boron compounds where better fungicides than the copper ones. Furthermore, minimal remedial boron fungicidal concentration is approximately five times higher, than the preventive minimal inhibitory concentration
Postglacial development of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in the territory of the present- day Slovenia
The paper reviews the research dealing with the presence of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) within modern-day Slovenian territory in the Pleistocene and Holocene. The data on paleobotanical remains (Tertiary fossil remains, pollen,macroscopic plant remains) on Paleolithic sites and on genetic properties of the present silver fir populations are presented. The possible existence of glacial refugia and local postglacial development of silver fir populations in Slovenia are discussed
Artificial energy inputs into spruce lowland forests in suburban landscapes in Slovenia
Slovene forestry is concerned with nature conservation, but in the past, the species variety of forests has often been changed and, similarly as elsewhere in Europe, the share of forest with artificial dominance of Norway spruce increased. Based on the spatial model of landscape structure, we estimated the arrangement in conservation of suburban forests in eight Slovene macro regions. In the area of town Kočevje, we assessed artificial energy inputs in the forests lying within one kilometre large area used by inhabitants for daily recreation. In this area, 65 % of forests were categorized as forests with artificial dominance of Norway spruce
Management of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Slovenia
In the paper, we analysed the structure and developmental characteristics of forest stands with silver fir in Slovenia, the management and cut in four forest site strata, where silver fir occurs. We used databases from the Slovenia Forest Service. In growing stock (GS) of silver fir, large (dbh=30-49cm) and very large (d=50 cm and more) diameter trees account for 84.9 % at the national level. The highest share of very large diameter silver fir trees (45 %) is in Dinaric silver fir forests and silver fir-beech forests(B), the lowest in silver fir forests with fern and silver fir forests on non-carbonate ground (C). The dbh structure of GS, number of silver fir trees recorded from two subsequent measurements from permanent sampling plots,rising mean dbh of harvested silver fir trees all indicate general agingand regression of silver, which is typical of stratum B but not in all other strata. The ingrowth of silver fir in 10 years is highest in stratum C (19.2 trees/ha), the lowest in B (4.2 trees/ha). In the latter, cut intensity (22.3 % of GS), the mean dbh of harvested silver firs are highest, too. For active conservation of silver fir, reduction of the impact of large ungulates and differentiated silviculture with longer regeneration periods is of crucial importance.
