Application of controlled experiments for studies of radial tree growth
In the paper, a review of publications on controlled experiments of heating and cooling of trees and their significance for the studies of radial tree growth is presented. The experiments carried out by different researchers in anumber of tree species have demonstrated that it is possible to affect cambial activity and processes of wood and phloem formation and by that their anatomical structure; however, the response of cambium to locally elevated or decreased temperatures differed in various evergreen and deciduous tree species. Our most recent findings indicate that tree age and thickness off bark (i.e. outer dead bark) appear to influence the extent of such experimentson cambial activity and cell development
The impacts of climate change on the expected spatial redistribution of forest vegetation types
The redistribution of forest vegetation types in Slovenia, driven by the expected climate change, has been simulated. The potential spatial changes of forest vegetation have been analyzed using empirical GIS model forecasting thespatial distribution of forest vegetation in relation to climate and other ecological parameters. Based on the three different climate scenarios, the simulations showed that the spatial pattern of forest vegetation will be altered under the impacts of climate change. According to the prediction in the year 2070, the vegetation type is likely to be changed on more than 75% ofall forest sites. Nowadays dominant forests, mostly beech, may be affected by such changing environmental conditions. The decrease of the actual prevailing mesic beech forest share from the present 57% to only 3% under the pessimistic scenario and up to 29% under the optimistic scenario could be expected. Number of cells in xylem, phloem and dormant cambium in Silver fir (Abies alba), in trees of different vitality
We investigated the anatomical structure of phloem and xylem growth rings as well as the dormant cambium in relation to vitality in 81 adult silver fir trees (Abies alba Mill.). Specifically, we investigated the number
of cells produced in the current phloem growth ring (PR), xylem growth ring (XR) and their ratio, the number of cells in the dormant cambium (CC), and the structure of the PR, which included characterisation of the early phloem (EP), the late phloem (LP), and the presence, absence, and continuity of tangential bands of axial parenchyma (AP). EP was relatively stable with respect to number and types of cells as PR width changed, but LP was quite variable. The CC of more vital trees produced more xylem than phloem cells. The ratio of XR to PR number decreased with decreasing vitality of trees and in the most severely affected trees (4% of the study group), more cells were formed in the PR than in the XR. The number of cells in phloem, xylem and dormant cambium is positively correlated. The use of width and structure of phloem and the ratios between PR, XR and CC can provide information on tree conditions and, consequently, can be a useful tool for forest management
Aviafaunal conservation assessment of the Sava river b etween Krško and Jesenice na Dolenjskem and a proposal for a new important bird area (IBA) in Slovenia
Inventory of avifauna was carried out in 2008 within a 32 km2 area of the SavaRiver between Krçko and Jesenice na Dolenjskem with the aim to evaluate the conservation importance of the area. Birds were counted twice on 25.3 km of line transects placed in three landscape types - woods, agricultural landscape, and mosaic. Breeding birds along the Sava River, with emphasis on common kingfisher Alcedo atthis and common sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos, and of water bodies of the area were surveyed, too. In total, 132 species were recorded, 88 of which were breeders. Fifteen breeders are listed in Annex 1 ofthe Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds. Three ofthem meet the criteria for IBA/SPA designation - night heron Nycticorax nycticorax, black kite Milvusmigransand common kingfisher Alcedo atthis. The criteria used were: (1) more than 1% of the national breeding population of the species in the area, (2) more than two breeding pairs of the species in the area and more than five breeding pairs comprising the total national population, (3) for the qualifying species, five most important areas for the species in the region (Slovenia) can be proposed at the most. The proposed newIBA/SPA Sava river between Krško and Jesenice na Dolenjskem is the only area for the night heron and black kite and the fourth most important area forthe common kingfisher in Slovenia
