Bibliometric analysis of publications of the researchers of the Department of wood science and technology of the Biotechnical faculty
In order to identify a bibliography of an entire institution in Slovenia through COBISS/COBIB/OPAC it is necessary to conduct advanced search queries by combining complex criteria which are presented in the article. The total number of publications (records) by the Department of Wood Science and Technology of the Biotechnical Faculty during 1980-2009 was identified, and thoroughly assessed by document types, languages, and number of records by each particular researcher. Altogether 5150 records were identified, with 1660journal articles published in 146 different journals. Core five journals accounted for more than 1000 articles. There is a high number of the so called Monographs and Other Completed Works, which also cover student theses, but many "monographic" documents contain one page only and are not publicly available. Several authors have produced several hundred documents each. Document types are not always assigned according to uniform criteria and it is frequently not possible to distinguish a difference among certain types. The real involvement of an author is not immediately evident because the same document type assigned to an author can imply different roles, such as a primary author or a mere peer-reviewer. COBISS-linked SICRIS must be used for better assessment of bibliographies of individual authors. The institutions, however, can only be assessed through COBISS/OPAC but the results must be interpreted with caution
Wood formation in beech from two sites at different altitudes
We present the dynamics of cambial activity and wood formation in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) from two sites
Panška reka (400 m a.s.l.) and Menina planina (1200 m a.s.l.) in 2008. Research was conducted on the tissues of wood, cambium and bark taken from adult trees using the micro-coring technique. The cores were taken at weekly intervals during the vegetation period. Cambial divisions began at Panška reka earlier (between 14 April and 12 May) and finished later (between 30 June and 25 August) than at Menina planina (onset between 16 and 23 May, end between 30 June and 25 July). The highest cell production was recorded at both sites few days before the summer solstice. At Panška reka, the formation of tree-ring lasted 11 to 19 weeks and the mean tree-ring width was about 3 mm. At Menina planina the production of wood lasted 6 to 7 weeks, and the mean tree-ring width was 1 mm. Greater variability among trees at Panška reka was also confirmed with dendrochronological investigations. Comparisons of local tree-ring chronologies indicated that summer drought and high summer temperatures negatively affected variation of tree-ring widths at Panška reka. The situation at Menina planina corresponded to high mountain conditions where higher summer temperatures positively affect the growth
Examples of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) application in marine ecology studies in the northern Adriatic
Photosynthetic pigments have proved to be useful biomarkers of the abundance, composition and physiological status of the phytoplankton biomass in the marine environment. Using HPLC pigment analysis, we determined phytoplankton community structure in three different marine environments: in the area of a fish farm, in the area of sewage outlets, and in the mucilaginous aggregates. At the reference site we observed seasonal changes with prevalence of fucoxanthin-containing phytoplankton (i.e. diatoms) during winter/spring and autumn. In the fish farm area the concentration of chlorophyll a degradation products was higher, whereas in the locally enriched environment of sewage outlets we observed only small changes in taxonomic composition and phytoplankton biomass. The impact of season is more expressed than the impact of sewage discharge. With the use of HPLC pigment analysis we determined the development of phytoplankton community in different stages of mucilage aggregates. Phytoplankton biomass was composed primarily of diatoms, and as the aggregates aged, diatoms increased in the relative biomass. Our examples have proven the usefulness and suitability of HPLC pigment analysis in marine ecology studies
Analysis of trees planted in vicinity of hospitals in Ljubljana as a source of pollen
The paper analyses woody plants growing in the vicinity of hospital buildings situated along Zalog Road, Korytko Street, Šlajmar Street, Bohorič Street and Njegoš Street in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Woody plants are an immediate potential source of allergenic pollen, affecting all park users such as patients, visitors and hospital employees. The most allergenic tree species in the park was found to be birch (Betula pendula Roth.), which accounts for 6.8% of all registered trees. The low allergenic maples (Acer sp.) and the low allergenic horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) account for 19.6% and 7.4%, respectively. Among the medium allergenic trees are ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) (4.8%), plane (Platanus x hispanica Muenchh.) (4.2%), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) (1.9%), and oak (Quercus sp.) and hazel (Corylus avellana L.) withless than 1%
Comparison of two programs for standardisation of time-series data in dendrochronology
Several freeware programs are available for calculation of chronologies. In this paper, we compared two of these programs; the well known ARSTAN and the newly introduced library for standardization dendrochronological data dplR, made for statistical program R. Both are free. ARSTAN is specific and produces chronologies from tree-ring width by standardization, while dplR is a package within the statistical programming environment R, which is able to analyze and present results of other analysis. For comparison of chronologies,made in these two programs, we used different tests. ARSTAN provides many options for calculating chronologies, whereas dplR demands written orders and offers no choices. Differences between built chronologies from these two programs are not statistically significant - programs produce same results comparing basic statistical analysis for average tree-ring width sand standard deviations, but for results of sensitivity and autocorrelation coefficient, there is a difference on a second decimal place. Correlation between standardized chronologies is 0.9773, while between residual chronologies it reaches 0.9776; graphically, the differences are also small and low numbered. As the true difference between the programs lies merely in the working environment, it is for users to decide, which program suit them best
Multi-scale habitat association of the ortolan bunting Emberiza hortulana in a sub-mediterranean area in Slovenia
The habitat selection of the ortolan bunting Emberiza hortulana has been examined on multiple
spatial scales. Habitat variables of territories and random points were measured in the field on a 25 m
radius and from GIS layers on scales of 25 m, 100 m, 500 m and 1,000 m radius. Habitat variables were
analysed by a generalized linear model. The ortolan bunting was found on a 25 m radius in areas with
a few black pines, with low grass and open patches within the herbaceous layer. On a 100 m radius scale,
the probability of occurrence was highest in areas with meadows with large trees, permanent and partly
overgrown meadows, and small areas of forests. On a 500 m radius scale, the occurrence of the ortolan
bunting was negatively affected by urban areas and their infrastructure and by forests, and positively by
partly overgrown meadows and permanent meadows with or without large trees. On a 1,000 m radius,
permanent meadows with or without large trees, and the absence of large urban areas and infrastructure
positively affected the presence of the ortolan bunting. In conclusion, factors influencing habitat selection
by the ortolan bunting differ according to spatial scale. On the territorial level, its presence was only
influenced by cover of open and partly overgrown meadows and by forest, while on larger scales it was
also affected by the cover of urban areas. Factors influence habitat selection differently on different
scales; a forest influences the probability of a territory positively on a small scale while negatively on
larger scales. Factors influencing the habitat selection positively on a larger scale are becoming less
common and therefore fewer suitable sites are available for the ortolan bunting in Kra
Impact of enviormental factors on the appearance and distribution of dental fluorosis in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) in eastern Slovenia
Increased concentrations of fluorides in the environment have a negative impact on different animal species, which are manifested
mainly with the irregular formation of the dental hard tissue, called dental fluorosis. With the assessment of dental fluorosis in every
adult roe deer shot in eastern Slovenia in 10 Hunting Management Districts in 2007 (n = 7,158), implementation of statistical analyses
in raster GIS environment with high resolution (1x1 km) and cartography, we wished to: (i) establish the differences in the appearance
and distribution of dental fluorosis in roe deer from different areas of eastern Slovenia; (ii) define the impact of the main sources of
fluorides on the appearance and distribution of dental fluorosis; (iii) determine the most important environmental factors that have an
impact on the appearance of dental fluorosis. In general, eastern Slovenia is not polluted with fluorides, while less than 1% of samples
showed moderate to severe dental fluorosis; 84% of samples showed no fluorosis at all. Only in the vicinity of the most important source
of fluorides in Slovenia (aluminium smelter), there is an area with extreme fluoride pollution of the environment. The multivariate
statistics revealed that the appearance and distribution of dental fluorosis are influenced primarily by: (i) the distance from the most
important point source – (94.6% of the total variance); (ii) the age of the analysed animal (5% of the total variance); and (iii) the
distance from the nearest forest edge (0.7% of the total variance), respectivel
