Organization of fine root data obtained from minirhizotrons and ingrowth soil cores (how to construct an operational database using MS Access)
Root observation with minirhizotrons is a useful technique to study root system dynamics by means of a transparent tube and a root image acquisition device. It has been in use in root studies for a few decades. The method is best complemented by sequential soil coring for studying root growth in defined soil volume in a time sequence of sampling, or by use of ingrowth soilcores method, which allows measurement of fine root biomass and growth in the exposed soil (substrate) cores during a defined time interval. Most fine root studies techniques are based on picture taking and computerized image analysis. From such analyses, enormous amount of raw data is derived, which ishard to control and manipulate. To enable a friendly and reliable data organization, two MS Access databases were designed, using data from minirhizotron pictures and ingrowth soil cores. These MS Access databases enable the data user to save time and reduce the amount of errors made during data handling (such as extensive copy-paste data routines in and out of numerous Excel files). Our aim was to improve data quality control and allow an easy, friendly and efficient way of manipulation of fine root growth data without a high level of knowledge on database construction. Therefore, in thisstudy, we present an efficient way of handling a large amount of minirhizotron and ingrowth soil cores data, by using MS Access database. To better present the protocols some results and experience on improving data quality are presented

Morphological variability of Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl in the north-western Balkans
Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl is a species native in the north-western Balkans, where it has a divided range. Most of its range is located in flood-prone riparian sites in the Pannonian plain but the species is also found on humid sites along some rivers in the Submediterranean region. We analysed morphologic variation within and between five populations (14 trees/population) located in the Subpannonian and Submediterranean region of Slovenia. Thirty two characters were assessed on ca. 80 leaves from each tree which were divided depending on exposure to sunlight (sun and shade leaves), and 8 traits on each fruit (ca. 50 fruits/tree). A hierarchically designed experiment using analysis of variance confirmed the significant contribution of all the analysed hierarchical levels of variation to the total variation. The results show that the differences between the trees in a single population are the greatest factor of variability of leaves, followed by differences between populations and differences which are the result of variation in exposure to sunlight. Leaves in shade positions are typically larger than those in sunny positions, and they have broader and shorter-pointed leaflets; in this feature they are very similar to the leaves of F. excelsior. Stepwise discriminant analysis showed that the traits which refer to the leaflet number and length are the best differentiating traits between individual populations. The Submediterranean population Dragonja stands out with the smallest leaves and the population Lijak from the same region is the most similar to Dragonja for most morphological traits. In general, phenotypic differences between the Subpannonian and the Submediterranean populations of F. angustifolia are minor and indistinct. Based on the differences ascertained by the study, we can only confirm the presence of F. angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa (Bieb. ex Willd.) Franco et Rocha Alfonso in this part of its natural range

Retrieval of wood-technology-related documents on the basis of universal decimal classification (UDC) in the union database COBIB.SI
The article tackles the assignment of UDC numbers to the documents for the research field of wood technology in the Slovenian union bibliographic/catalogue database Cobib.si, search possibilities with the UDC and relationship of UDC with selected subject headings. We identified the mostimportant UDC numbers related to wood technology. We assessed the frequency of assignment of particular numbers by way of MARC-based prefixes DC= (MARC/Comarc subfield 675a) and UC= (MARC/Comarc subfield 675c). We assessed the co-occurrence of different groups of UDC, relation to the document types and Slovenian- language documents, as well as the co-occurrenceof UDC with wood- or wood-technologies-related Slovenian language subject headings. We tested the most applicable search syntax. Subfields 675a and 675c differ in the content of UDC. The 675c is based on a special authority-list and does not sufficiently provide narrower, more specific numbers in relation to wood. Two groups (630*8* and 674*) are assigned with a very high frequency. These groups can be represented in both subfields. Frequently, the two subfields contain UDC from different groups, soin order to achieve optimal retrieval recall it is necessary to use both subfields, by way of Boolean OR. Analysis of co occurrence of UDC (based on 674* and 630*8*), and subject headings (based on Slovenian-language stem for wood) shows that many documents (35 % and 34%, respectively) do not contain subject headings based on the term wood
Main phases of wood formation in chestnut (Castanea sativa) in Central Italy: comparison of seasons 2008 and 2009
We present wood formation in chestnut (Castanea sativa) during the growing seasons 2008 and 2009, compare its dynamics in the two years and discuss possible effects on wood quality. To this purpose, microcores containing wood, cambium and phloem were collected at weekly intervals from 10 chestnut trees growing at the Cimini mountains near Viterbo, Central Italy. In 2008, the onset of wood formation started before the first sampling on 17 April 2008. Onset of lignifi cation of the fi rst formed vessels was observed around 23 April (day of the year DOY 113.8 ± 5.3) and the fi rst latewood vessels were observed around 5 June 2008 (DOY 156.5 ± 7.7). Latewood formation continued until 29 September 2008 (DOY 273.9 ± 10.5) when the terminal cells of the newly formed xylem ring were fully lignifi ed. In 2009, the main phases of wood formation generally occurred earlier than in 2008. The expansion of earlywood vessels was observed around 10 April (DOY 99.7 ± 6.1), the onset of lignifi cation around 22 April (DOY 111.9 ± 7.4) and the first latewood vessels around 28 May 2009 (DOY 147.9 ± 4.7). Lignifi cation of the last formed cells was completed by 26 September 2009 (DOY 273.9 ± 10.5). The average duration of tree-ring formation was 161 days in 2008 and 169 days in 2009, the average ring widths were 3296 ± 1514 μm in 2008 and 3166 ± 1073 μm in 2009, and latewood percentages comprised 76% and 74% of the 2008 and 2009 tree-rings, respectively. The small differences in timing of wood formation phases in the two study years are probably due to small variations in climatic conditions between the two years and they did not seem to have a major impact on ring widths and latewood percentages, which are two important parameters affecting wood

Dendrochronological dating of a traditional wooden wine cellar in Orešje, Bizeljsko, Slovenia
We made dendrochronological analysis in the Berkovič wine cellar in the village Orešje, Bizeljsko, Slovenia. The
wine cellar belongs to the oldest buildings of rural architecture in Slovenia and one of the beams contains the carved number 1722 presumably indicating the year when the object was built. The aim of the study was to date the timber by means of dendrochronology and check if the carved number indicates the year when the wine cellar was built. We collected cores from ten beams made of oak (Quercus spp.) in the walls of the oldest part of the building. We cross-dated the tree-ring series and dated all investigated beams. Based on dating of the outermost tree-rings of two beams which were the only ones which contained partly preserved sapwood, we concluded that the timber for the beams was harvested around 1790. The
dating of the outermost tree-ring of the beam with the engraved number was 1717. Since the beam contained no sapwood, the tree for this beam was harvested at least 15 years after the given year. The study therefore showed that the age of the object cannot be exactly determined based on the engraved number. The main part of the wine cellar was built around 1790, i.e. 68 years later than expected
