New records of the golden jackal (Canis aureus L.) in the upper Soča valley, Slovenia
Golden jackals (
Canis
aureus
) have been recorded in the
Slovenian Julian pre
-
Alps for more than 50
years. In recent years, however, a substantial increase in sightings of golden jackalshas been recorded in the
area around the town of Bovec. During the present study we gathered information through interviews wi
th local
hunters and other residents and conducted a basic questionnaire on their opinion about this expanding carnivore.
In addition, we performed monitoring of jackals with the use of acoustic playback method, photo
-
traps and
searching for footprints and
other signs of jackal presence. We also reviewed the database of the reported jackal
depredations on livestock at the Bovec Forest Service. In total, we conducted 31 interviews and gathered
information on 100 records
of jackal presence from 2009 to
2012.
The questionnaire showed a negative attitude
toward jackal among local hunters. Using acoustic methods, we were unable to confirm the presence of a
territorial jackal group, but we did detect jackals on
26 photographs made with photo
-
traps at one
location.
During the study, two jackals were killed by car and we collected tissue samples for potential future genetic
analysis. Official records of depredations showed high increase in assumed jackal attacks on sheep, but we could
not confirm if or how many of th
ese depredations were actually caused by jackals. Further
studies are needed to
understand the real extent of jackal predation on domestic and wild ungulates, as well as the origin and
development of this new jackal group(s) in the Julian pre

Estimating the accuracy of volume tables and volume equations for silver fir
Comparisons of stem volume estimation techniques were performed based on equations of Huber, Smalian and Newton, and a cubic spline interpolation of
points along the silver fir tree stems. Results indicate that Newton`s and Huber`s equations were the most accurate in determining volumes of old silver fir
trees (age up to 200 years and average dbh 59 cm). The obtained tree volumes were the basis for the standing timber estimation in the forest inventory. Despite
their rather simple structure, the Slovene Čokl (1959) tariff functions proved to be sufficiently accurate (average residual in percentage of the mean volume
< 1%, R2=0.87). The proportion of the individual tree volume variance explained increased by 5 % for standard two-entry volume tables and by 11% for threeparameter
volume functions

Morphological evidence for the presence of the Danube Crested Newt, Triturus dobrogicus (Kiritzescu, 1903), in Slovenia
We offer preliminary reports on the presence of the Danube Crested Newt, Triturus dobrogicus, in Slovenia. This species reaches its western border of distribution in Hungary, Austria and Croatia, but untill recently it was not known from Slovenia. Here we report on the first record of this species in Slovenia, found in Dolinsko polje of the Prekmurje region during the herpetological surveys carried out in the spring of 2009 and 2010. The species identity was determined by coloration, body shape and the Wolterstorff Index values. Only with additional genetic analysis could we answer if this is a pure population or whether hybridisation with T. carnifex is present

Spatial and temporal variability of hyporheic invertebrate community within a stream reach of the River Bača (W Slovenia)
We studied spatio-temporal distribution of hyporheic invertebrate community at the stream-reach scale in the River Bača on three sampling occasions (January, March, May) in 2005. On each sampling occasion, invertebrates were collected from the shallow hyporheic zone (RB1; depth 30-60 cm, 3 replicates), and deeper hyporheic zone (RB2; depth 60-90 cm, 2 replicates) in the river bed, and adjacent gravel bar (GB; depth 60-90 cm, 3 replicates) using Bou-Rouch piston pump. Concurrently, temperature, conductivity and oxygen were measured in the surface water and in hyporheic water at each sampling station. Differences in hyporheic community between dates and habitats were analysed by using two-way ANOVA (dates and habitats as fixed factors) and explored by principal component analysis (PCA). Altogether, 21,657 specimens from 63 taxa were collected. Cyclopoida juveniles, Leuctra sp. (Plecoptera), Chironomidae (Diptera), Acanthocyclops vernalis (Fischer, 1853) and Diacyclops languidus (G. O. Sars, 1863) were the most abundant in the samples. Two-way ANOVA showed significant differences between habitats (RB1 and GB), but no differences between dates when using taxonomic richness as dependent variable. No differences between habitats and dates were calculated when invertebrate densities were applied. PCA of hyporheic invertebrate data showed a gradient in community composition from shallow hyporheic zone (RB1) to deeper hyporheic zone (RB2) and gravel bar (GB). The differences were most probably due to different sediment composition in the studied habitats and less frequent disturbances due to floods in deeper layers and lateral gravel bars
