Biodiversity of saproxylic beetles of pine forests in Slovenia with emphasis on Monochamus species
From 2007 to 2010, we assessed the presence of entomofauna in two ecological regions of Slovenia on three locations: on limestone
parent rock in monocultures of Pinus nigra, on flysch in a stand of Pinus halepensis (both in the Sub-mediterranean ecological
region) and in a stand of Pinus sylvestris on brown soil (Pre-alpine ecological region). The samples were collected in one-month
intervals from May to November using four cross vane funnel traps per location with wet collecting cups and attractants (ethanol+α-
pinene, Pheroprax® and Gallowit®). Collected insects from the order Coleoptera belonged to the families Curculionidae (and subfam.
Scolytinae), Cerambycidae and Buprestidae. The most important saproxylic groups were Scolytinae as the primary saproxylic beetles
at 90.7% (21,820 specimens), containing 21 taxa and 18 species; Cerambycidae at 6.4 % (1534 specimens), 24 taxa, 20 species;
Curculionidae at 2.5% (613 specimens), eight species and Buprestidae at 0.4% (90 specimens) and one species. With respect to
the number of species identified, the most numerous family was Cerambycidae; the dominant species was Spondylis buprestoides,
followed by Rhagium inquisitor, Arhopalus rusticus, Acanthocinus aedilis, Neoclytus acuminatus, Monochamus galloprovincialis,
Leiopus nebulosus, Arhopalus ferus, Sticoleptura rubra and Cerambyx scopoli. Collected species of long-horned beetles represent ca.
10% of all known species of Cerambycidae in Slovenia. With regard to our findings, we can conclude that Slovenian forestry legislation
(Act of Forestry 1993 and Rules on the Protection of Forests 2009) regarding the protection of forest biodiversity is appropriate for the
preservation of saproxylics
Contribution to the knowledge of the spring butterfly fauna of the Republic of Macedonia (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea & Hesperioidea)
In spring 2010, we encountered 60 butterfly species during field surveys centred
mainly
in the under
-
surv
eyed southeastern part of the Republic of Macedonia. We visited 23 localities, where
several interesting
observations were made. Among these, new sites of
some rare species such as
Pontia chloridice
,
Pieris krueperi
,
Plebejus sephirus
,
Scolitantides orion
,
Tarucus balkanicus
,
Melitaea ornata
,
Carcharodus orientalis
, and
Erynnis marloyi
should be mentioned. Such a high number of species observed indicates an overall high butterfly
diversity of this region, particularly in the lower Vardar valley. Here, sever
al specific habitats hosting rare and
threatened species were discovered. The anthropogenic pressure on important butterfly habitat is still low in the
surveyed area; however, the first signs of large scale abandonment are already visible

Charac terization of anatomical structure and basic physical pro perties of Velenje xylite
Xylite is a lithotype of lignite, mainly used for fuel. The wood from which it was formed in a long term process (duration ca. 2 millions of years) was subjected
to drastic changes. We conducted anatomical characterization of xylite, evaluated preservation of wood from which it was formed, defined its basic physical
properties, and compared it with modern wood. We recognized ground tissue composed of tracheids, uniseriate and homocellular rays, taxodioid like crossfield
pits, and abundant axial parenchyma with inclusions. The observed features are typical of coniferous wood species of the Taxodiaceae and Cupressaceae
families. Colourimetric properties of xylite in CIE Lab* system are comparable to those of heartwood of ebony or wenge. The xylite had high oven dry density
(1,216 kg/m3), but due to very high volumetric shrinkage (28.2 % on average), its basic density was much lower (873 kg/m3). Total linear shrinkage was
considerable in all anatomical directions. Consequently it was characterized by low dimensional stability (qT = 0.65 %/%, qR = 0.30 %/%). The equilibrium
moisture content (EM C) in desorption process was high, and that of adsorption was comparable to EM Cs of high density wood species. GAB sorption model
proved to be appropriate for fitting the data obtained in the sorption process
Archaeobotanical investigations at the pile-dwelling site Stare gmajne, dated on the basis of wood investigations
We investigated 932 samples of wood from the prehistoric pile-dwelling site Stare gmajne at Ljubljansko barje. With the help of dendrochronology, radiocarbon dating and wiggle matching method we established that the dwelling was settled in two periods from approximately 3350 until 3330, and from 3160 until 3110 cal. BC. We introduced an archaeobotanical method which is widely used in other European laboratories and identified macrobotanical remains (seeds and fruits) from both settlement periods. Most important cultural plants were: einkorn, emmer, barley, opium poppy, flax and peas. Most frequent gathered plants were: apples, pears, strawberries, blackberries, bladder cherries, cornelian cherries, hawthorns, blackthorns, grapes, dog-rose berries and nuts (acorn, hazel nut and water chestnut). While a widely accepted method was used, we identified for the first time flax and einkorn / emmer wheat on the basis of chaff remains at a Slovenian prehistoric site. We compared plant economy habits between Stare gmajne and some contemporaneous lake dwellings around the Alps; the most important cultivated wheats at Stare gmajne were emmer and einkorn, while at the sites north of the Alps naked wheat was often found. Corenlian cherry, water chestnut, and grape vine were frequent at Stare gmajne, but they were rare or were not found on the sites north of the Alps
