Flora and partly vegetation of the Zala gorge in the upper Iška river basin

Between 2005 and 2009 and especially in 2011 and 2012, we studied the flora and partly vegetation of the Zala Gorge (Dinaric phytogeographical region, research area 403.2 ha). We divided the area under discussion into 40 units. We recorded all present taxa in each of them during different seasons. The results of floristic observations are shown by units, altitudinal belts and stream banks. We tested both floristic and ecological similarities between units by mathematicalstatistical methods. After analysis of groups of phytosociologic, chorological and plant life forms, we tested their density statistically by altitudinal belts and stream banks. Altogether, we recorded 503 taxa, 122 (24 %) of which were observed for the first time. The particularities of the Zala Gorge's flora are three endemic taxa, the long-known endemic species Primula carniolica now listed in Annexes II and IV of the EU FFH Directive, rare endemic species Scabiosa hladnikiana and recently described stenoendemic taxon Heliosperma veselskyi subsp. iskense, numerous Alpine, southeast-Alpine-Illyrian, southeast-European and other protected and threatened taxa. The results of the floristic and partly vegetation investigations show unique floristic and vegetational diversity of the Zala Gorge, which is distinguished floristically and ecologically from the recently described Iški vintgar. The new described syntaxa are: Scabioso hladnikianae- Caricetum sempervirentis, Valeriano saxatilis-Molinietum arundinaceae, Omphalodo-Fagetum aretosum maculatae, -luzuletosum luzuloidis, -mercurialetosum perennis with variants Festuca altissima, Hordelymus europaeus and Ctenidium molluscum, -homogynetosum sylvestris, -cardaminetosum pentaphylli with variants Fraxinus excelsior and Geranium nodosum, Ostryo carpinifoliae-Piceetum and Bazzanio-Abietetum huperzietosum selaginis

Density and mechanical properties of oak sapwood versus heartwood in three different oak species

The aim of this study was to investigate the main mechanical properties of sapwood and heartwood in white and red oaks. Samples of wood were taken from 26 oak beams prepared to be used for railway sleepers, of which 62% were from white oak (either Quercus petraea or Q. robur) and 38% from red oak group, represented by Q. cerris. For both oak groups, the following parameters were determined: the density, bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), compression strength and Brinell hardness of sapwood and heartwood. Multiple analyses were done to compare the properties of sapwood and heartwood, as well as the properties of white vs. red oaks. The results revealed no significant differences between sapwood and heartwood properties but statistically significant differences were found between the properties of white and red oaks. The research results contradict the common opinion of users that the mechanical properties of sapwood are inferior to those of heartwood. Investigations revealed that Q. cerris had even better mechanical properties than Q. robur or Q. petraea, which also contradicts the common opinion that its mechanical properties are inferior to those of white oaks. The results help to understand better wood variability for optimal selection of timber for constructions

Review of cellular and subcellular changes in the cambium

    No full text
The commonest approach to studying cambial productivity is conventional light microscopy, which is widely used in wood formation studies. The number of such studies has increased rapidly in the past decade, usually in order to elucidate the relationship between growth and environmental factors. However, some aspects of cambial seasonality are often overlooked or neglected. Observations with transmission electron microscopy provide a more detailed insight into changes occurring on the ultra-structural level in cambial cells. Criteria for defining cambial activity are not yet fully clarified, especially when observing it at different resolutions, i.e., on cellular, subcellular and ultrastructural levels. The goal of this review is to contribute to clarification of the terms mainly used, such as cambial dormancy, reactivation, activity, productivity and transition between different states, resting period and quiescence, which describe structural modifications of cambial cells during the various phases of their seasonal cycle. Based on our own cambium observations on adult beech trees growing at two different elevations, which were made with light and transmission electron microscopy, we discuss the influence of weather conditions on cambial activity and the advantage of the complementary use of different techniques and resolutions

Gozdovi plemenitih listavcev v Sloveniji : združbe gorskega javorja, gorskega bresta, velikega jesena, ostrolistnega javorja, lipe in lipovca

Gozdovi plemenitih listavcev so bili v Sloveniji na podlagi povsem novih znanstvenih izhodišč sistemsko opredeljeni v pregledni Tipologiji gozdnih rastišč (2012). V okviru tega so bili na podlagi ekologije in višinske razprostranjenosti opisani naslednji rastiščni tipi: podgorsko-gorsko lipovje na karbonatnih in mešanih kamninah, podgorsko pobočno velikojesenovje na karbonatnih in mešanih kamninah, gorsko-zgornjegorsko javorovje z brestom na karbonatnih in mešanih kamninah in podgorsko-gorsko javorovje s praprotmi na silikatnih kamninah. V tej publikaciji so na osnovi dosedanjega znanja in dostopnih virov v skladu z znanstvenimi fitocenološkimi principi utemeljili omenjene štiri rastiščne tipe s pripadajočimi asociacijami/združbami. Opisali so ključne značilnosti tipov gozdov plemenitih listavcev, kot so razširjenost, geološke, pedološke, reliefne in podnebne značilnosti, rastlinskevrste, gozdnogospodarski in gozdnogojitveni vidiki, naravovarstveni pomen in ogroženost. Vsakega od štirih rastiščnih tipov smo ilustrirali s slikami značilnih rastiščnih in sestojnih razmer ter diagnostičnih vrst
