S9_1 Shaping emotional knowledge. Digital curating practices at the ›Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe‹ in Berlin
By considering the ›emotional knowledge of the historical‹ (Tschofen) in its relationship to ›practices of digital curation‹, the article uses ethnographic examples to illuminate how visitors to the ›Holocaust Memorial‹ in Berlin relate to the history of the Holocaust through digital media
PA_2 Statistics, medicine and fashion magazines: On the influence of heterogeneous knowledge configurations on journalistic images of society in the 19th century
The sociographic sketch, which solidified as a journalistic genre in the 1830s, is a highly heterogeneous text form. It brought together artistic and scientific elements in an entertaining and market-driven way. This contribution deals with various media/epistemic regimes or configurations of knowledge that have influenced the evolution of the sociographic sketch as a medium of social self-observation. In doing so, it develops cross-genre and cross-disciplinary perspectives on the refinement of social research in the nineteenth century
PC_2 Crypto Parties and the creation of anonymity and privacy Kurztitel: Crypto Parties, anonymity and privacy
In this contribution, I am taking a look at a distinct practice of public engagement, namely Crypto Parties. I investigate how anonymity practices are transferred from ›experts‹ to ›laypeople‹. Crypto Parties are politically significant practices, in which knowledge about anonymity is spread and circulated among different groups. The political significance of these practices does not lie in its direct impact on for example state policies, but in the way in which it is able to create dispersed anonymity practices and alter everyday behaviour and knowledge about data security and privacy practices. The empirical study on Crypto Parties is just a first step in helping us to understand this cultural and political practice as a practice of generating knowledge about anonymity
Unemployment and Social Disorder during the British Colonial Period in Eritrea (1941–1951)
This article investigates the connection between unemployment and social disorder that characterized British colonial rule in Eritrea between 1941 and 1951. Using the archives of labour of the British period, this article documents the causes of social disorder that galvanized the British period in Eritrea. Based on archival documents, the article argues that the public insecurity and social disorder of the British period were largely related to socio-economic conditions resulting in mass unemployment caused by (1) the dissolution of the colonial army institution; (2) the destruction of the manufacturing industries; (3) the importation of labour from neighbouring British colonies. Upon the defeat ofItaly by the British in Eritrea during WWII, the British system had a clearly diminished appetite for colonialism and abandoned any agenda of capitalist expansion, inflicting massive redundancies on the labour force. This produced new social groups such as migrant workers, brigands, and vagabonds. Based on these archival documents, an alternative explanation is introduced pinpointing far more accurately the sources of public insecurity and social disorder during the British colonial period between 1941 and 1951
The Semantics of Locative Adpositions in Amharic
This paper intends to describe the semantics of locative adpositions in Amharic, a Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia. The analysis is based on elicited data that were collected by using Bowerman and Pederson’s (1992) topological relations picture series. The study shows that Amharic locative adpositions can convey specific and generic topological relations between the figure and ground entities. The specific locatives show a specific type of topological relations (for instance, verticality as in tatʃtʃ, below’, ‘under’; horizontality as in fit, ‘front’; containment as in wɨst’, ‘in’) between the figure and ground entities, but not the generic locatives. Aside from which, I argue that Amharic does not fit into Ameka and Levinson’s (2007) typology of locative predicates and constitutes a type of its own because it uses two copulas and a locative verb

PH The format \u27participation\u27 as work on the relationship between law and politics
This paper explores how political concerns expressed by self-advocates of disabled people are formatted in participatory procedures and made ›doable‹ for policy processes. The specific work done by self-advocates to integrate politics and law in specific ways is conceptualized as ›reflexive juridification‹
Corporealities to the limit : The female body as border territory from artistic practice as research
I propose a theoretical-practical approach to the presentation and representation of the female body in artistic creation. That is, the use of the body as a space at the limit, liminal, of danger and transgression, with the consequent potentially re-signifying effects of territory and common space through art. This narration is accompanied by the dissection of the creative process in phases and its final product, where I start from my own body, as testimony, meeting place, object and subject, studying its relationship with the context in an act of defiance to patriarchal authority. In this sense, we could relate it to the de-hierarchisation and proximity to others, in an unregulated but vital encounter of desiring, non-docile subjectivities, which eroticize politics with their irruption into the public sphere, with the intention of living, creating, loving, inventing another society, another perception of the world and other value systems
