The paper analyses the margins and multilingual graphemes in Arthur Rimbauds Stuttgart-Letter from 1875 and argues for their contextualization in the history of franco-german wars.

In my contribution, I propose to study the question of Laferrière’s adoption of new media forms, leading him to resort to the hybrid genre of the graphic novel, situated halfway between literature and visual art. Using the example of Vers d’autres rives (2019), my analysis will focus on the function of this reversal for Laferrière’s project and on the resulting shifts in the relationship between autofictional production and its positioning in relation to different spaces and cities. How does the discourse of the graphic novels evolve with respect to the artist\u27s space and cultural belonging? To answer such questions, I will first present Laferrière\u27s autofictional work, then situate his “graphic novels” in the Quebec and Haitian contexts, and finally share some reflections on the “autographic” narrative (Whitlock 2006) and how it constructs, through writing and images, the social and medial space of narrative. The last part will focus on the analysis of Vers d’autres rives from the point of view of self-representation, sociocultural spaces, and the contribution of the intermedial to Laferrière\u27s autofictional, spatial and poetological reflections. &nbsp

Armeno-Aethiopica in the Middle Ages: Geography, Tales of Christianization, Calendars, and Anti-Dyophysite Polemics in the First Millennium

    Get PDF
Research for this article had the purpose of exploring medieval Armenian–Ethiopian connections. The investigations revealed three main contexts where Ethiopia and Ethiopians feature in the Armenian sources of the first millennium, without necessarily implying real-life encounters. Firstly, the earliest Armenian texts locate Ethiopia and discuss the genealogy of its people in line with the biblical account of the Diamerismos, as well as notions based on Eusebius of Caesarea’s Chronicle translated into Armenian from Syriac in the fifth century. Each author, then, interpreted this information according to his narrative needs or the purpose of a given composition. The discussion of these sources reveals the circulation of classical and Hellenistic notions on Ethiopia and the Ethiopians in Armenian, too, such as the confusion between Ethiopia, Arabia, and India, as well as anthropological or spiritual features attributed to Ethiopians already by classical authors. Secondly, the article analyses a series of calendrical treatises, starting with one authored by the seventh-century polymath Anania Širakac‘i, that passed on a short tale about a sixth-century gathering of scholars in Alexandria in order to determine the date of the Easter and establish tables for its calculation in the future. An Ethiopian wise man Abdiē was part of this international endeavour too, according to this tradition, and his presence marked Ethiopia as part of the eastern Mediterranean learned world, with its own cultural traditions. Armenian language hemerologia also preserved month names in Gǝʿǝz,  reproduced in the Appendix. Thirdly, the article draws attention to a completely new way of viewing Ethiopia in ninth- to eleventh-century Armenian anti-dyophysite (antiByzantine) treatises where the Armenian Church and its doctrines or ritual practices were imagined as part of a vast, non-dyophysite orthodox world that included the Ethiopian Church. Intriguingly, this argumentative technique, formulated in terms that one may callanti-colonial ante litteram, may be traced among Coptic and Syriac polemicists as well, a subject of research that would benefit from further analysis

A Fragment of the Late Aksumite or Early Zagʷe Period on the Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew

    Get PDF
This short note presents the transcription and translation of the old fragment of a manuscript of commentary on themes from the Gospel of Matthew which was found tucked at the end of a manuscript of Nägärä Maryam (EMML 7229, fols 122r–123v). The fragment probably dates back to the late Aksumite to early Zagʷe period and is likely to be a translation of a commentary by an early church scholar. The Vorlage remains unknown

Studying the Planning Process of the Marketplace of Hamburg‑Sasel as an Assemblage

    Get PDF
This article examines how the planning process of a market area in Hamburg-Sasel emerges as an assemblage. First, assemblage theory is used to analyze the planning process itself. To this end, related components such as diverging interests, conflicts and authorities as well as discourses are considered regarding their impact on the planning process. Second, assemblage theory is considered in terms of its value for urban anthropology

Iteration type I of holistic DBR - transferability of design Principles

    Get PDF
The iterative nature of DBR is a well-known and valued aspect of research in education. Nevertheless, iterations may take different formats, especially if a complex design object is at hand.  Holistic DBR outlined by Dr Gabi Reinmann (2020) provides an opportunity to display development of complex research objects. Still, there are not many examples to illustrate holistic DBR iterations. The current paper illustrates iteration type I of the holistic DBR and also displays how transferability of design principles can be tested. The iteration is a part of a wider DBR (Cycle 10) outlined in the article: Design principles for developing online ethics resources - the outcome of holistic DBR process. The current study utilised document analysis and a short questionnaire to evaluate whether the design principles would support creating ethics resources in various disciplines. The results of Cycle 10 contributed to elaboration of design principles, and elicited recommendations on facilitation of ethics training

Replik und Revision: Standards für Design-Based Research

    Get PDF
Die Entwicklung von Standards für Design-Based Research (DBR) ist ein Desiderat. Mit meinem Beitrag „Was macht Design-Based Research zu Forschung?
