Knowledge generation between design, data and theory: Argumentation in design-based research
Design-based research (DBR) is a diversified research genre: The combination of two worlds – that of research and that of education – and the different backgrounds and intentions of those involved entail different emphases, epistemological ideas, ideas on valuable outcomes and normative claims. This becomes visible in very different kinds of reasoning: No uniform structure of argumentation can be discerned, and so far, a differentiation into clear DBR types has not been convincingly achieved. This is a challenge for the orientation of DBR novices, the quality review of DBR studies, and the legitimation of DBR in the field of educational research. This article provides an empirical contribution to the discussion on argumentation: In a literature review, DBR studies are examined regarding their outcomes, the rationales authors use to justify their outcomes and indications for specific challenges in DBR reasoning. The analysis confirms for the sample that preliminary, prescriptive theory is most common alongside diverse practical outcomes. Authors often justify them with emphasis on variation, iteration, cooperation, and data triangulation. Different (standard) orientations, multi-level reasoning, and sub-studies present challenges for authors and readers, going back to the complexity of DBR projects. To justify their results in a comprehensible way, authors are confronted with the task to actively select an argumentation strategy

„Übrigens, wo liegt Ygrande?“: Emile Guillaumin, ein Autor zwischen dem Bourbonnais und Deutschland
Der Name Émile Guillaumin ist heute eher in Vergessenheit geraten. In diesem Beitrag wird der Platz, der ihm in der französischen sowie in der deutschen Literaturgeschichte eingeräumt wird, untersucht. Ferner soll die v.a. schulpädagogische Rezeption seiner Werke in Deutschland anhand des sehr aktiven Netzwerkes, das sie ermöglichte, Meilensteine für weitere Forschungen liefern.Émile Guillaumin tends to be forgotten today. This article examines the place he has been given in French and German literary history. Furthermore, the pedagogical reception of his works in Germany based on the very active network that made it possible will provide milestones for further research.Émile Guillaumin, dont la postérité aujourd’hui oscille entre invisibilisation, faible patrimonialisation et absence, ne fut toutefois pas l’auteur de la seule Vie d’un simple, ouvrage pour lequel il reste malgré tout encore très connu en France. Qu’en est-il à l’étranger et plus particulièrement en Allemagne ? La question de la réception de Guillaumin en Allemagne nécessite donc d’en analyser les traces aujourd’hui et d’en interroger les acteurs, les horizons d’attente et les modalités. Les jalons mis en avant dans cet article (un réseau particulièrement actif entre le Bourbonnais et l’Allemagne, une réception avant-tout scolaire de ses œuvres durant la première partie du XXe siècle) permettent de dégager les principales caractéristiques d’un transfert particulier entre la France et l’Allemagne d’une œuvre de littérature à l’extrême marge « de ceux qui n’écrivent pas »
“Classical” liberalism in France, from the middle of the 19th century to World War I : Strengths and paradoxes of a thwarted society project
Why did “classical” liberalism – during its European golden age in the mid-19th century – never give birth, in France, to a political movement which could be influent enough to carry its whole society project? The environments of political economy, which were the authentic representatives of this wave, seemed to have had a hard time finding their place within a contentious context inherited from the French Revolution, but also fully investing in the game of democracy. As the defenders of free trade and limited state power, liberals also faced the increasing difficulty to see their ideas being questioned at the turn of the 20th century. It is thus necessary to go back to the very definition of French “classical” liberals, in order to better highlight their ambitions, their failures and their inherent practices, and better understand what constitute for them, and in many ways, their own identity
Disputed Translations from The Life and Struggles of Our Mother Walatta Petros (2015) Reconsidered: Some Notes on Gǝʿǝz Philology
The present article was prompted by Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes’s ‘Colonial Rewriting of African History: Misinterpretations and Distortions in Belcher and Kleiner’s Life and Struggles of Walatta Petros’ as published in a special issue of the Journal of Afroasiatic Languages, History and Culture in the fall of 2020. Yirga’s text of more than eighty pages is a wide-ranging and often acrimonious critique of Wendy Laura Belcher’s and my scholarship in our 2015 annotated translation of the Gädlä Wälättä Ṗeṭros. This reply does not attempt to address all the philological and non-philological issues Yirga raises. Rather, it focuses on refuting Yirga’s allegations of sexualizing mistranslations on our part. As these alleged mistranslations form the virtually exclusive basis for Yirga’s more far-reaching accusations against our scholarship, refuting them also collapses his broader case
