Museums are public spaces of social discourse. Concepts of participation and inclusion have redefined the role of museums. As contact zones and third spaces they are increasingly understood as empathetic spaces of exchange, dialogue and confrontation. Following the postcolonial turn in cultural studies, today the self-reflective, institutionally critical examination of the museum’s epistemologies, topoi, questions and narratives is more important than ever

Contributions of the use of photographic images in Mathematics classes: constructing knowledge through a Design-Based Research

    No full text
The present study investigated the contributions that a pedagogical intervention conducted with in-service elementary school teachers, based on Design-Based Research (DBR) and utilizing an educational product composed of photographic images related to concepts of plane geometry, can offer to the teaching and learning of this content. The educational product consists of a "Mathematical Pathway," as a proposed solution to the problem defined by the participants. It benefited from the collaboration of a research group comprising teachers, students, and researchers from the University <some items have been removed for blind review>, who evaluated the proposal before its implementation. From the obtained results, design principles were defined, such as: connection to local and cultural reality; use of photographic images as a teaching resource; dynamics of the "Mathematical Pathway"; integration of technological resources; collaborative work; reflections on the participants\u27 classroom practices; creation of a teaching and learning environment characterized by the exchange of theoretical and practical knowledge; perception of the feasibility of producing potentially meaningful educational material through the use of photographic images; and connections between Mathematics and the local and cultural context

Im Gegenteil siedelt sich die oft gezielt vage Referenzialität geschickt zwischen Subjektivität und universeller Bergerfahrung, zwischen authentischem Erleben und virtuellem Erschreiben an.Since the 2000s, numerous novels and stories have been published about the European experience of the Second World War. These post memory texts often focus on regional events that have so far received little attention, including combat operations and border shifts in the Alpine region. Building on various spatial theories, this article examines how the mountains are constructed in four Italian novels and what functions the textually imagined mountains fulfil in the negotiation of European memory between past, future, and anticipation. The interweaving of a horizontal-topographical axis and a vertical-chronological axis appears to be decisive in this context. The geological nature of the mountains is thus investigated to initiate trans-European memory processes; their spatial continuity serves as a bridge between the narrated, no longer remembered past and the present moment of narration. The mediatised Alps always refer to the real Alpine region, but not always with the same geographical precision. On the contrary, the often deliberately vague referentiality is skilfully positioned between subjectivity and universal mountain experience, between authentic experience and virtual description

‘Yellow Bar Mitzvah’: Mobilisations of Gangsta Rap as Futures Oriented, Agential Jewish Heritage in Germany

State-approved and -funded Jewish cultural heritage has largely focused on concrete tangible spaces or structures, such as synagogues and mikvaot (ritual baths), and material objects. They often represent and evoke an idealised, unchanging Jewishness of the past that is presumed to be acceptable to non-Jewish audiences, yet one that bears little resemblance to lived Judaism, whether past or present. Using hip-hop by Jewish subjects in Germany as a case study, with a special focus on rapper Dimitri Chpakov, this article investigates the mobilisation of popular culture in the twenty-first century by diverse Jewish subjects under the radar of state-sanctioned conceptualisations and representations. Past studies have examined Jewish hip-hop in Germany within the authorised heritage discourse around Holocaust commemoration and anti-Semitism. This article argues that Jewish hip-hop initiatives need to be explored as alternative statements of Jewish heritage, Jewish communal identity, and Jewish diversity, geared towards young living Jewish community members. Such functions tend to be ignored or misunderstood in top-down discourses perpetuated in the public sphere. This article examines the extent to which present-day German Jewish hip-hop prompts a counter-heritagisation process: by creating compelling, deeply personal, and imitable musical forms, it reimagines and reforms conventional definitions of heritage in the service of young Jews living in Germany
