    No full text
ABSTRAK The conversational implicature is generally divided into two parts: generalized and particularized conversational implicature. In addition, when people are having a conversation, they do not only convey implicit meaning using these two kinds of implicature, but they also use figures of speech such as idioms, similes, sarcasms and hyperbole. This research is conducted to analyze the phenomena of conversational implicatures which occur in the dialogues of Pure Nectardrama script. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design. The data source is the drama script of Pure Nectar obtained from www.simplyscripts.com. Moreover, there are four stages for the researcher to analyze the data: (1) reading thoroughly the Pure Nectar drama script, (2) finding out all implicatures occurring in the conversations by all the casts, (3) identifying all the implicatures through numbering and categorization, and (4) drawing a conclusion. The results of data analysis show that there are 75 utterances that contain conversational implicatures; they are classified into six groups. In terms of their frequency of occurrence, they are presented in the following order: generalized conversational implicature (66.67%), idiom (17.33%), simile (6.67%), particularized conversational implicature (5.33%), sarcasm (2.67%), and hyperbole (1.33%).Furthermore, this research also reveals that all the 75 utterances containing implicatures fall into two categories: 71 direct speech acts (94.67%) and 4 indirect speech acts (5.33%). Within the 71 direct speech acts, there are 57 declarative sentences (76%), 8 interrogative sentences (10.67%), and 6 imperative sentences (8%). On the basis of these research findings, it is suggested that the future researchers investigate particularly on clausal implicature, which belongs to generalized conversational implicature, so as to provide detailed information about implicit ways of conveying speaker meaning in the field of pragmatics

Advisors: (I) Dr. Suharmanto. M.Pd., (II) Nunung Suryati.,M.Ed.,Ph.D. Keywords: speaking class, intensive course.   This survey research was aimed to know the students’ perception towards speaking class in Intensive Course (IC) Program in term of: (1) The achievement of course objective, (2) The student’s handbook, (3) The teaching and learning process, and (4) The improvement to maintance classroom management. This research used questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire was adapted from Scott (2003), the student’s handbook and course profile of speaking class. The population of the study was 192 students who attended the Intensive  Course (IC) program in 2015. There were 85 students who responded to the survey. The sample was chosen through random sampling technique which used lottery. The researcher wrote the class name in a piece of paper. After that, the researcher randomly picked the lottery. The data analysis was conducted through 3 steps. The first one was identifying the responses. Then the data were analyzed to identify the general trend and the last step was calculating the frequency and precentage of students’ response in each number. The result has drawn that most of the students said “Agree” and “Strongly Agree” that speaking class has made the students meet the expected competence as stated in the course profile. Furthermore, the class has been effective to help the students preparing the next courses. The research also found that the student’s handbook has been optimally utilized and the content is properly used to support the teaching and learning process. Moreover, this survey has shown that the teaching and learning process is the aspect which needs improvement since the students feel bored and frightened. Despite of that, the competent lecturer which one of them was native speaker is the aspect of speaking class that do not need any improvement. The finding was significant to evaluate the speaking class in Intensive Course program. The data suggest that the English Department should consider the class size in order to make the students feel enjoy and can engage better. The existance of native speaker will definitely help the students to get better understanding of English, spesifically speaking skill. Furthermore the classroom strategies should be fun and interesting. The lecturer may used the speaking class strategies by Harmer (2012). Moreover, the lecturer should give the students a chance to take part in the class and pay attention to what they say. Further resarcher should consider the types of questionnaire, the bigger participant of pilot testing, the important of interview to gain further information and the sampling technique. The research could also be conducted to determine the effective classroom strategies in speaking class and the content of the student’s handbook.

Asysyuaro’, R.A. 2016. Woman in Public and Private Realm as Seen Through Gender Stereotype. Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Thesis Advisors: (I) Drs. Kukuh Prayitno S., M.A, (II) Maria Hidayati, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Women, Patriarchy, Gender Stereotype, Public Realm, Private Realm The portrayal of gender in our everyday life can be easily seen through the media, one of them is film. Different from other media, a movie is able to give an almost real image of the past life. The Duchess is a film which talks about the life of women in 18th century England. In that era, the concept of patriarchy was widely used and, therefore, woman as the main object in the film was always seen under the authority of men, whether in a public realm with men domination or in a private realm which was the natural realm for women. This study aims to show that woman is bound by the stereotype inside the private realm, but she can easily break the stereotype when she is in public realm. As seen through gender studies’ point of view, especially from gender stereotype’s point of view, the main female character’s behavior and lifestyle in this movie are not suitable at all with the common stereotype of women. The data of this study are focused on Georgiana’s behaviors and attitude in both public and private realms since the researcher has found out that there is a huge contrast between her behavior in public and in private realm as seen through gender stereotype’s perspective. The result of this study shows that there are two main reasons that make the main character unable to break the stereotype inside the private realm. The first and the most important reason is patriarchy. As the object of this study, Georgiana’s character shows that the real and direct practice of patriarchy is clearly seen inside the household. Men as the leader of the family are trying to show their power and authority over women in many ways. The second reason is women’s traits an emotional being. This emotional traits later on develops into another tendency called self-sacrifice. Georgiana’s self-sacrifice for other people, in this case for her family, is able to keep her from breaking any stereotype in private realm. Through this study, the reader is expected to be more alert and conscious on their place in society, whether it is in public or private realm. Gender stereotype cannot be used as a parameter on how people should behave. The researcher also wishes that through this study, people can respect, treat, and tolerate any gender, whether it is man or woman, who tries to break their stereotype as it is considered as a sensitive issue nowadays. For future researcher, this study is expected to be further analyzed from men’s perspective in order to cover the same problem for both genders

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PARTICIPATION POINT SYSTEM (PPS) STRATEGY TO INCREASE EIGHTH GRADERS’ ORAL PARTICIPATION IN ENGLISH LEARNING AND TEACHING PROCESS IN SMPN 10 MALANG

    No full text
ABSTRAK Students’ active involvement in learning is important to make the students achieve their learning objectives. The students’ involvement during the class can be seen from their active participation, especially their oral participation. Most of the students in 8C class of SMPN 10 MALANG were very passive during the English class. They tended to be very quiet and became passive listeners when listening to teacher’s lectures. In the informal talk with the students, the researcher found that their being passive was due to their low motivation in learning English, their hesitancy to raise their hands to ask or answer teacher’s questions, and their fear of making mistakes. Another reason for their being passive during the class was the lack of opportunity to partake orally because the teacher often give long lectures without involving the students’ participation.Teachers as learning facilitators should motivate the students to take part actively during the learning and teaching process. One of the strategies that can be implemented is Participation Point System (PPS) strategy. This strategy provides points to reward each participation that the students make in English learning activities. This study was conducted to increase students’ oral participation by implementing Participation Point System (PPS) strategy. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, and this study involved 34 eighth graders of 8C class. The data were collected by using field notes written in each meeting, written questionnaires, and also informal talk between the researcher and some students. This study was carried out in two cycles which covered eight meetings. The implementation of this study was considered successful if 30 out of 34 students (88% students) partook orally during the English class in each meeting. This study found that the students’ oral participation could increase gradually. The increase of the students’ oral participation from the first until the fourth meeting in the second cycle was 88%, 91%, 97%, and 100% students. This shows that the Participation Point System (PPS) strategy worked well in increasing the eighth graders’ oral participation. This strategy was successful in creating more enjoyable class atmosphere and making the students feel confident in partaking orally and more competitive. However, this strategy was only used to give external motivation. Therefore, it is suggested for other researchers to find out strategies that can move the students’ reward-seeking behavior which focuses on tangible rewards into something more internal, namely the feeling of satisfaction that comes from students’ enjoyment in taking part actively during the English class

    No full text
ABSTRAK This study seeks to analyze the use of non-standard negation don’t with third person subjects (e.g. it don’t, he/she don’t) found in the lyrics of popular west songs in a decade time. The songs are based on Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart taken from 2006 to 2015. The methods used in this study is both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Mix methods are used because the study involves collecting, analyzing, and integrating quantitative and qualitative study which provides depth and comprehensive understanding of the research problem from different angles.Findings indicate that there are 117 popular west songs containing don’t with third person subjects which seems to prove that this negation has a possibility to influence English language to change through time. From the songs, other singular seems to become a trend towards third person subjects use followed by don’t. Meanwhile, hip-hop becomes the genre that dominates the popular west song lyrics. Furthermore, male’s songwriters behave significantly from the rest of the genders (female and collaborative of male and female). In general, the data fluctuate year to year indicating some implicated meanings related to external factors such as the popularity of the songs, trend towards non-standard forms, and even economic motive. This study also investigates ten song video clips from certain years that have the biggest and smallest numbers of songs that contain the non-standard negation don’t with third person subjects in a decade as well as provide the identification of the genres of the songs and the gender of songwriters. The analysis of the ten songs is also based on the factors that have been discussed by Holmes (2001). They are the participants, the setting or social context of the interaction, the topic, and the function. Moreover, the results provide a discussion of rebellion motive as well as the background of songwriters which become possible reasons why don’t with third person subject is used in the songs. Finally, this study can be used to make speakers especially young people as well as students of English to be more aware of the use of this non-standard form in popular west songs. In addition, this study can be used as a new reference for future researchers to conduct other research of this kind considering that apparently only very few researchers have studied about this issue and none of them use song lyrics as the data

The more students’ interact with English, the more they are familiar with the English vocabulary. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between the frequency of watching English movies with Indonesian subtitles and students’ vocabulary mastery. This study was conducted in SMA Negeri 7 Malang. This study used clustered random sampling as the sampling technique. The sample of this study was chosen from the existing eleventh grade classes of SMA Negeri 7 Malang. There are seven classes with the total numbers of the sample are 181 students. The data were collected using two instruments, questionnaire and vocabulary test. The data sources of this study gained from the score of both instruments. The questionnaire was used to know the frequency the students watch English movies with Indonesian subtitles and vocabulary test was used to know the students’ vocabulary mastery. The instruments had already tried out in order to know the length of time for students to answer. The result of this study shows that there is a positive correlation between the frequency of watching English movies with Indonesian subtitles and students’ vocabulary mastery with .000 as the significant value. The coefficient correlation value of both variables is .715, which could be interpreted as high or strong correlation. Based on the result, it can be concluded that there is a significant positive high correlation between frequency of watching English movies with Indonesian subtitles and students’ vocabulary mastery. It means that the students who watch English movies with Indonesian subtitles frequently have high vocabulary mastery. The result of this research, hopefully, gives a theoretical contribution to the English teacher in SMA Negeri 7 Malang, to use English movies with Indonesian subtitles as the comprehensible input or media to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. However, for the future researcher who wants to conduct the same study, increasing the sample size can be done in order to have a better result and make sure that the instruments used are valid and reliable enough to be conducted. It is better if the researcher uses parametric test to do hypothesis testing in order to get the more accurate result and the population estimation also will be wider and general

ABSTRAK Apsari, Palupi Sekar. 2017. The Tendency of Using Indonesian and English Swear words by ELL Students of State University of Malang. Sarjana’s Thesis. Universitas Negeri Malang: Department of English. Advisors: (1) Dr. Emalia Iragiliati Sukarni, M.Pd., (2) Maria Hidayati, S.S., M.Pd. Key words: Swear words, Indonesian swear words, English swear words, ELL students, Types of swear words.Swearing has been considered as a rude and offensive act among society. In fact, nowadays swearing seems to have shifted its nature. It is not rare anymore to see people swear at each other, especially among close friends. Swearing has been defined as a form of solidarity among friends. People swear in many languages, yet most people tend to swear in their native languages because they are accustomed to using those languages since they were born. This research aims at investigating the tendency of using swear words by the participants who are exposed to both their native language and also a foreign language. Thus, English Language and Literature (ELL) students of State University of Malang are chosen as the participants of this research. Its goal is to find out whether the participants tend to swear in Indonesian as their native language or even in English as their foreign language. The research design for this research is descriptive qualitative. There are two ways for the researcher to collect the data. First, the researcher recorded the conversations between ELL students during many occasions such as lunch break, chatting during classes, etc. The recordings are later transcribed so that the researcher could find and highlight the swear words found. Second, the researcher also distributes questionnaires to 20 participants. The questionnaires focus on finding out the reasons behind the tendency itself. In addition, the researcher also grouped the swear words into the strong and weak ones. The research findings show that even though the participants are exposed to English for quite some years, they are still accustomed to and feeling more comfortable to swear in Indonesian, particularly Javanese, as their native language. It is shown by the number of frequencies between Indonesian and English swear words. There are 28 Indonesian swear words that are produced 187 times. And as for the English swear words, there are 6 swear words that are produced 26 times. The result from questionnaires also show the same outcome. 12 out of 20 participants say that they choose to swear in Indonesian than in English. While the other 8 choose English and also both Indonesian and English. The tendency of using Indonesian rather than English swear words is mostly because the participants feels more comfortable and are able to express their feeling sincerely. The swear words are also used as an expression to show annoyance, surprise, insult, and even violent refusal. This research concludes that people are still accustomed to their native language while they are swearing. Even though they have been studying and exposed to English for some years, it doesn’t seem that it brings major change for their language habit. This research is expected to give contributions to the readers, subsequent researchers and also parents and teachers in order to get a broader perspective regarding the use of swear words. For the subsequent researcher in particular, it is hoped that this research could broaden and expand the research that can be analyzed through many approaches of studies
