ABSTRAK The unconscious state of mind of a human is what mostly causing a person to become what he/she is today. Just like an iceberg, based on Sigmund Freud’s psychological theory, what is below the water is the hidden reason to what he/she may have become. However, there are times where a person takes quite sometime in realizing such fact that when he/she encounters a problem in his events of life they become stressful or even suicidal. This study aims to discover the issue of hidden reason based on Sigmund Freud’s Psychosexual Development theory in Landon Carter, a character in a novel entitled A Walk To Remember written by Nicholas Sparks. In this research, the researcher applies qualitative research method. The sources of data are library and literary data. The technique includes reading the novel “A Walk To Remember” by Nicholas Sparks, identifying and marking important points from the character analyzed, taking notes on the primary data (novel) and secondary data references), matching the notes with the Psychosexual Development theory suggested by Sigmund Freud and finally drawing conclusion based on the analysis of data. The analysis finds that the boy in this novel (1) experiences an inbalance parental care, (2) thought that Jamie Sullivan represents his mother in many ways, (3) experiences mother-fixated during phallic stage, (4) resolves the mother-fixated by getting married with Jamie Sullivan. The researcher concludes that Landon Carter had an affair with a girl named Jamie Sullivan where they became closer and in the end getting married. In the end, Landon believes that Jamie represents his mother in many ways that this will resolve the mother-fixated issue. The writer’s suggestion for further research is to emphasize more on the issue of Landon’s attachment to his mother viewed from the perspective of Oedipus Complex and explore this novel by the point of view of defense-mechanism. As for parents, this research can be used as a reference in understanding their children more

ABSTRAK Yuliantari, A.R.D. 2017. Using the Multiple Stay-Stray to Increase the Participation in Speaking Activity of the Eleventh Graders in SMAN 10 Malang. Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I) Dr. Furaidah, M.A. (II) Dra. Sri Andreani, M.Ed. Key words: Multiple Stay-Stray, group work, students’ active participation.Student’ engagement in teaching and learning process as indicated by their oral participation is important for the development of language competence. However, in class XI MIPA 5C3 of SMAN 10 Malang, only 15% of the students were active in speaking practice. This study aimed at increasing students’ oral participation by using Multiple Stay-Stray (MSS) strategy. MSS strategy is a group work that makes students experience multiple times of being in stay and multiple times of being in stray condition in which students experience presenting and receiving information several times. Students stay in their group three times to present a topic to different audience, and in stray they listen to several presentations about several topicsThe design of the study was collaborative classroom action research involving the English teacher and a researcher’s partner as observers. The procedure used were planning, observing, implementing, and reflecting. The research was conducted in two cycles involving three meetings in each cycle. To collect the data, observation sheet, field notes, questionnaire, interview and video recorder were used. The implementation of MSS strategy is considered successful if 60% of the students performed at least 4 of 5 indicators with a minimum of 2 frequencies per indicator and the students had positive response toward the strategy. The results of the study indicated that MSS strategy could increase the students’ active participation effectively. The result showed that the criteria of success had been achieved. More than 60% of all the students took part actively in the teaching and learning process. In cycle one, the percentage of the students who participated actively in the class was 54.6% and in cycle two the percentage of students increased to 77.3%. The increase of the students’ participation was due to meaningful repetition, small audience and interesting topics (teenager-friendly topic). The repetition of presenting and receiving information made them know what to say. Based on the questionnaire, the students enjoyed the discussion in small groups. It reduced their anxiety of speaking in front of many people and made them more confident in asking question and explaining something. Then, the interesting topic motivated them to read and talk about the topics. In conclusion, through well-designed strategy, activities and material, the students’ active participation could be increased. In addition, there are some aspects that should be considered in the further implementation, such as clearer instruction, various interesting topics and the way in grouping the students. The active students should be mixed with the passive students. This study focused only on increasing student’s active participation. Further researchers can expand the focus also on the students’ achievement in speaking activitie

ABSTRAK Santoso, Yurizal. 2017. Attitudes in Donald Trump’s Presidential Announcement Speech. Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisors: (1) Aulia Apriana, S.S., M.Pd.. (II) Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. Keywords: presidential announcement speech, Appraisal theory,  attitude, Affect, Judgement, Appreciation.Presidential announcement speech plays an important role in the process of making decision for political power in countries. However, few studies have been carried out concerning their discourse semantic functions, lexicogrammatical properties, and production process. Therefore, the main purpose of this work is to analyze an appraisal analysis of the discourse of Donald Trump’s Presidential Annuncement Speech and focusing on Attitude (Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation). The main theoretical framework the researcher draws upon in this work is Appraisal theory (Martin, 1997, 2000; Martin & Rose, 2003; Martin & White, 2005; White, 2000; Hood, 2004).The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative method which tries to interpret and formulate the patterns of Attitude applied by Donald Trump’s presidential announcement speech. The data are in the form of transcriptions that were taken from http://time.com/3923128/donald-trump-announcement-speech/. The process of analyzing the data was started from collecting the data followed by classifying the data based on the theory in Chapter I, analyzing, discussing the findings and then drawing the conclusion.Through the analysis and study, this reveals that in the Atitude system, Affect turns to be the least presentation; and more Judgement occurs rather than Affect and Appreciation. There were 506 clauuses consist of 57 Affects, 98 Judgements, and 87 Appreciations. Negative Attitudes in the speech were used more than Positive Attitudes. The use of Negative more often in the speech portrayed himself as a subjective leader who could analyze problem and find the solutions based on what he believes in. It is suggested that the English linguistic students can find other examples which are related to this topic particularly in speech. Furthermore, there should be further research on Attitude, not only its distribution but also how the numeric numbers imply

ABSTRAK   This thesis analyzes the concepts of truth that are used in the film entitled “The Invention of Lying” using the theory by Richard Campbell and the book by Lee Archie and John G. Archie. The data were taken from the scenes and dialogs that was in the film. Those two elements is the main data of the analysis. The finding shows that the film is indeed using several concept of truth as the base idea for the film’s truth. These concepts are ‘Truth Needs to Corresponds with Reality’, ‘Reality is a Truth’ and ‘Truth is Consistent’.Yet, even the film has a solid base in the idea, the film still has a flaw that I find quite a bother despite the fact that the film is somewhat has a great promise by building its world as the world of truth. The flaw is the conflicting use of the conception of truth. However, there is one form of ‘true’ that the film shows us for the entire time. The ‘true-as-faithfulness’ concept which however we look at it, it is part of the Coherence theory because of its consistency.Yet in order for us to be able to change our idea of truth, we still need a few qualities that which are important to face the ever changing reality such as personal commitments and personal growth that require openness, faithfulness, and authenticity

Learning English as a foreign language is very important for any level of education in Indonesia nowadays. In helping students mastering English, teachers have to provide a good way that can enhance students’ motivation and ability in learning English. This study is aimed to know whether or not the use of Jigsaw technique really improves students’ ability in reading comprehension.             In the preliminary study which was conducted in X AKUNTASI-2 of SMKN 1 Pogalan, I found out that the students’ ability in reading comprehension was poor. Their reading comprehension score was low; they lacked of vocabulary, and did not master tenses. Besides that, they were less active in the learning process because the class activities were teacher-centered.             To overcome these problems, I used Jigsaw technique. This strategy was chosen because the results of the previous study by Mengduo&Xiaoling (2010) showed that this strategy could motivate students to study English especially in communicating using English. Besides that, the result of another previous study by Husseini,Maleki, and Haeri (2014) said that students can learn in a supportive environment, and they are not passive learners.             This study used Classroom Action Research where I implemented the strategy and the English teacher of class X AK-2 acted as an observer. This study was conducted in one Cycle. The research subjects were 36 students of X AK-2 of SMKN 1 Pogalan. The data of this study were obtained through two instruments, i.e. the students’ reading comprehension test, and an observation sheet filled by the English teacher.             Based on the findings, it showed that the implementation of Jigsaw technique met the criteria of success in Cycle 1. This was because 88.9% or 32 out of 36 students got more than ten points improvement in their final reading comprehension test score. The result of the observation sheet showed that the students were active in the implementation of Jigsaw technique, and gave positive feedback toward the use of Jigsaw technique.             This study proposes Jigsaw technique as an alternative strategy to English teachers who face similar problem related to the students’ reading comprehension. The teachers may need to modify the activity depending on the atmosphere of the class and the problems of the class. For further researcher, I suggest that the further researchers use Jigsaw technique to improve the students’ reading comprehension and ability in different text types.    ABSTRAK Learning English as a foreign language is very important for any level of education in Indonesia nowadays.
