Negotiating Identity Reflected In 'A Far Cry From Africa', A Poem By Derek Walcott
SUMMARYPutri, Irma Puspita Sugianto. 2018. Negotiating Identity Reflected in ‘A Far Cry From Africa’, A Poem By Derek Walcott. Thesis Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: Dr. M. Misbahul Amri, M.A. and Inayatul Fariha S.S., M.A.Keywords: Identity, Negotiating Identity, Liminality, Mimicry, Hybridized, A Far Cry From AfricaIdentity plays a significant role in shaping someone’s world. In the post-colonial era, the hybridized generation had to decide one culture as the identity even though they had two or more inheritance identities. This study aims at finding the solution of the character’s crisis identity which is reflected in the poem “A Far Cry from Africa”. The writer uses the theory of identity, post-colonial identity and cultural identity to be able to cope with the main topic of this study. We also need the theory of mimicry and liminality to understand the unique solution of identity crisis. Thus, the identity crisis that reflects in this poem and the resolution of the character’s identity become the focus of this study. The data source uses a poem ‘A Far Cry from Africa’ that was published in 1964, the Studies in African and Carribean Literature by Edward Baugh in 2006, and compilation of Interview Session with Derek Walcott by several writers. The study of identity, post-colonial identity, mimicry, and liminality theory will help other critics, literature teachers, students and reader to cope with the problem of crisis identity in this poem. The result of the study shows that the main speaker who Derek Walcott himself finds it difficult to choose one identity as his cultural identity. He tries to distinguish certain character of the particular identity yet in the end, he has to choose to one identity for some reasons. Moreover, according to the Walcott’s life story, this poem clearly reflects his actual situation, feeling, and decision in reality. However, there are some benefits and consequences that he has to face according to his decision. In this study I analyze the way theory of identity works in the form of poem. Thus, I am able to find several lines that have not been criticized by other critics that conduct the solution of his identity crisis. These arguments are supported by the biography books of Derek Walcott as strong and undeniable evidence. Then, I attempt to find Walcott’s personal reasons that reflects both in his poem and his biography

“Hay Spoder”: Lexical Creativity in Language Use in Spoderman Comic Strips
ABSTRACT Irawan, Liga. 2018. “Hay Spoder”: Lexical Creativity in Language Use in Spoderman Comic Strips. Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisers: Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi, M.A. and Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono, Ph.D. Recently, popular media such as 9gag has received a great amount of attention. It allows people to share accessible postings one of which is meme. Memes posted in 9gag vary that each one has their own character, including Spoderman comic strips that is known for having intentional errors as their identity. The words in the language used in Spoderman comic strips seem to be unsystematic that they are full of typos and errors, yet the readers of the comic are able to read them without any considerable difficulty. It shows that the forms are not just made randomly. This study aims to find out the pattern of how to make the language (or words containing error) in Spoderman comic strips posted in 9gag. After a number of data were collected, the analysis was done quantitatively by the assistance of AntConc. 3.4.4w 2014. This step was used to deal with some words, which have the same meaning, in some cases written differently. The data then were analysed qualitatively by the theory of Elliot and Johnson (2008) as the framework of the analysis. Two out of five categorisations are taken which are sound-based forms and writing forms. The results show that the words in the language used in Spoderman comic strips are made through three major steps. They are imitating the sound of its original word, through some creativities (intentional errors) in their writing, or the combination of both. Those steps are divided further into eight patterns on how to construct the forms: imitating the way how they are pronounced—as a phonetic or an English word; writing it as a single alphabet—numeral, consonant, and vowel; omitting its vowel; dropping its final letter; singling the double letters—consonant or vowel; inserting unnecessary letter; reversing two letters; and changing one of its vowel. As related to Saussure’s (1959) theory of sign, all these types of lexical creativity suggest that they manipulate the signifier without modifying the signified. There are three suggestions proposed for further research. First, using more data in relation with particular forms which barely have identified specific pattern and another theory(s) as the framework could possibly answer the uncertainty. Second, it is also possible to apply the error analysis to other comic strips as the object of the study. Third, using enough data of the forms happening in everyday written chat conversation under certain circumstances could discover the pattern in a lifestyle communication context.ABSTRAK Irawan, Liga. 2018. “Hay Spoder”: Lexical Creativity in Language Use in Spoderman Comic Strips. The grammatical errors made by the students happen repeatedly in composing a written text especially in descriptive texts because the students are still interfered by the Indonesian language. The Indonesian students often find difficulties in writing because the grammatical rules between English and Indonesian language are different. The aim of this research is to describe and analyse the grammatical errors made by the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Lawang class X social 4 in writing descriptive texts. The data was collected from the students’ writing product by asking the students to write a descriptive text about tourism objects/historical places. The researcher provided five pictures of tourism objects/historical places and asked the students to choose one of the picture to be described. Then, the result of their writing was classified and analyzed using Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. Errors were classified into four types: omission errors, addition errors, misformation errors, and misordering errors. The result of the data analysis is reported descriptively. The result in research finding showed that the students still commit many grammatical errors in writing a descriptive text since they were interfered by Indonesian language. They also directly translate the sentence from Indonesian language to English. There are totally 702 errors made by the X Social 4 students of SMAN 1 Lawang in writing descriptive texts. Omission errors are the most common type of errors made by the students with the frequency is 312 (44.4%). The second error found is the error of misformation happens 219 time (31.2%). The third is error of addition occurs 158 times (22.6%). The least occuring error is error of misordering that reaches 1.8% in the data analysis. Based on the result of the study, the researcher suggests that the English teachers should be more concern on sudents’ grammar competence by giving them a treatment called “grammar clinic” in order to help them in learning grammar

Effendi Kadarisman, M.A., Ph.D.
