Using Modified Problem Based Learning to Improve Students’ Speaking Skill for the Eighth Graders of SMP Negeri 7 Madiun
ABSTRAK The aim of this research is to know how Modified Problem Based Learning (MPBL) can improve students’ speaking skill for the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 7 Madiun. It focuses on fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation and structure aspects. The design of this research was classroom action research which consisted of four stages: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The instruments used for gathering the data were speaking test, observation checklist, interview guide, and questionnaire. The subjects of this research were the VIII-H class of SMP Negeri 7 Madiun. The researcher conducted the preliminary study by giving the students a pre-test. The result of pre-test showed that only 4 out of 24 students could pass the minimum standard score, 70. All students’ average score was 43.13. The researcher held cycle 1 consisting of three meetings to solve the problem. The result of post-test in cycle 1 did not reach criteria of success, 70% passed the test. The students’ average score in this post-test was 64.17. The researcher continued to cycle 2 which consisted of two meetings. The result of post-test in cycle 2 indicated that all students reached criteria of success. The students’ average score in the post-test was 80.21. The findings of this research presented the students’ progress in speaking ability. Firstly in pre-test, only 4 students reached minimum standard score. In post-test 1, 10 students and in final post-test, all students reached score above minimum standard score. Secondly, the students became more active and enthusiastic toward the strategy implemented. This can be inferred that Modified Problem Based Learning gives good impacts to the students both in speaking and motivation in learning. There are some suggestions. For the English teachers, they can apply MPBL strategy in improving students’ speaking skill. For schools, they should add textbooks and support learning media so that education goals can be achieved successfully. For the future researchers, they should apply MPBL strategy as a reference to conduct other studies with other subjects, skills, and materials

ABSTRAK Sari, R.I. 2017. The Use of the First Language during the English Teaching Process in SMA N 6 Malang. Undergraduate Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisors: (I) Prof. Ali Saukah, M.A., Ph.D., (II) Dr. Suharyadi, S.Pd., M.Pd. It remains controversial whether first language should or should not be used in English classes, and to what extent its use is justifiable. Several studies have been conducted to address this issue. However, those studies focused on the first language use during English teaching and learning process in the primary and tertiary levels of education. The studies were also dominated by survey studies. Thus, this study was conducted in the secondary school and was designed to be in-depth for the purpose of filling the gap left by the previous studies. For this study intended to investigate the use of the first language during English teachers’ teaching process in an in-depth manner, a qualitative study; specifically a case study; was deployed. The subjects of the study were the tenth-grade and twelfth-grade English teachers of SMA N 6 Malang. This study used observation, interview, and related-documents collection as the data collection techniques. All the data were collected with the presence of the researcher without relying on well-developed instruments. Repeated cycles of the observation on the English teachers’ teaching process, in-depth interview with the English teachers, and triangulation which included theoretical and data triangulation were done to enhance the validity of the data collected. The process of the data analysis was taken place both during and after the data collection process. The data analysis process included data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing or verification. The temporary conclusions were drawn after each cycle of data collection process. The final conclusions were obtained when the new data did not change the conclusions had been drawn. The results of the data analysis indicated that there were fourteen different occasions on which the first language was used by the English teachers during the teaching process, four different manners of the English teachers in using the first language, and eleven different reasons for the teachers’ use of the first language on the occasions and in the manners mentioned

Cultural Information in The English Textbook “When English Rings the Bell” for The Seventh Graders of SMP/MTs
ABSTRAK English is one of international languages which is very important for education in Indonesia because many references or sources are written in English, for example journals and textbooks. English textbooks become the learning sourve for learners which includes cultural information which reflects with the background of the author. This research is a descriptive content analysis to answer: 1) to know whether English textbook “When English Rings the Bell” for the seventh graders of SMP/MTs cover cultural information and 2) how cultural information is covered on English textbook “When English Rings the Bell” for the seventh graders of SMP/MTs which use questions rubric about the content of the textbook which was related to cultural information. The instrument is adapted from Kilickaya’s article which was entitled “Guidelines to Evaluate Cultural Content in Textbooks.” The data is collected through document analysis. This research shows that English textbook “When English Rings the Bell” for the seventh graders of SMP/MTs covers native culture more than foreign culture, which are shown from the pictures and the dialogues in the textbooks because the learners are still on learning process of early level so it is expected that the learners know native culture closer before learning foreign culture. The materials which are explained on textbooks cover things around the learners so the learners feel familiar with the topics given. The topics which are given do not contain bad or good comment because it could make bias. It is found that: 1) English textbook “When English Rings the Bell” for the seventh graders of SMP/MTs covers the cultural information and, 2) the ways the English textbook “When English Rings the Bell” presents the cultural information for the seventh graders of SMP/MTs covers are by the content of the textbook, from the activities on the book, for example, the pictures which are shown and the exercises, such as crossword and projects. It is suggested that the teacher is expected to be aware of cultural information in the textbook. The teacher is also expected to discover and complement the foreign cultural information for the learners. The developer of the textbook is expected to be discreet on including the materials which are related to foreign culture. Future researchers are expected to conduct other studies on cultural information more deeply in topics which are related to this study because there are plenty of textbooks which are not researched yet
The Effect of Kamishibai on the 8th Graders’ Writing Recount Text
ABSTRAK Nugrahani, Elok. 2018. The Effect of Kamishibai on the 8th Graders’ Writing Recount Text. English Learning and Teaching, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisor I Dra. Nunung Suryati, M.Ed., Ph.D. Advisor II Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien, M.Pd. Keywords: Kamishibai, Recount Text, Writing Recount Text The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Kamishibai on eight graders’ writing a recount text. The subjects of this research were eight graders of MTsN 2 Kota Malang from class A and F chosen by the school with total of 40 students. There were 19 students from class A and 21 students from class F. The research design was quasi-experimental research which required two groups’ mean score to be compared. One class was the experimental group and the other class was the control group. Both groups received treatments for six meetings. The experimental group was taught by using Kamishibai while the control group was taught using conventional method. The instrument used in this research was writing test. Both groups were given pre-test to see the homogeneity, and post-test to see if Kamishibai was effective. Students’ works were evaluated based on contexts, text stuctures, language features, and mechanics. Both groups’ score were calculated using Independent Sample t-Test on SPPS to see if the difference is significant. The findings showed that there was a significant mean score difference between experimental group and control group scores after the treatment. The post-test score of experimental group was 8.2 while the control group score was 7.3. The experimental group improved recount text writing skill especially in content and text structures category. The t-Test result showed that the calculated p-value was .022 which was less than .05. The result showed a significant difference which meant that the null hypothesis which stated that the mean score of experimental group and control group was not significantly different was rejected. It could be concluded that Kamishibai was effective on improving students’ writing recount text. This conclusion was derived from the results of t-test. The findings of this study were expected to be useful for teachers and future researchers. For teachers, Kamishibai could be used as one of strategies to teach writing recount text. For future research, this study could be used as one of relevant references regarding Kamishibai and writing
