ABSTRAK   Ramadani, Lailatul Putri. 2017. Developing Descriptive Text Podcasts to Teach Listening for Tenth Graders. Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I) Francisca Maria Ivone, M.A., Ph.D. (II) Nur Hayati, S.Pd, M.Ed.   Keywords: Listening skills, podcast, descriptive text               The study aimed to develop descriptive text podcasts to teach listening to tenth graders of senior high school. Particularly, the product was developed in order to help tenth graders practice listening outside the class and English teachers who want to use descriptive text podcasts as the medium for teaching listening in the classroom. The study adapted the Research and Development (R&D) design by Borg and Gall (1989) by conducting five stages: (1) needs analysis, (2) product development, (3) experts’ validation and first revision, (4) product try-out and second revision, and (5) final product. The instruments used for the needs analysis stage were students’ questionnaire and teacher’s interview. The instrument used for expert validation stage was expert validation sheet, whereas the instrument used for the product try-out stage was student’s questionnaire sheet. In the study, there were two types of data namely qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained from data taken from needs analysis, lecturer and teacher validation and product try-out. The qualitative data in the form of comments and suggestions from validators were analyzed and described by content analysis. There were some steps in analyzing the comment and suggestion by using content analysis based on Miles and Huberman (1994:10-12). Meanwhile, the quantitative data were obtained from the checklist items in expert validation sheets in the expert validation stage and students’ questionnaire in the needs analysis and product try-out were analyzed by using descriptive percentage analysis adapted from Sugiyono (2014:137).             Based on the two validators, the product was considered appropriate for tenth graders to practice listening. It was shown from the analysis of the expert validation sheets. The students were also interested in the descriptive text podcasts. According to the result of the product try-out, 67.74% of the students agreed that the podcasts could help them to practice listening skills. The final product is in the form of podcasts on the topic of best friends, family, and idols put on MP3 format. The first podcast is talking about Hannah’s twin brother and family. The duration of the first podcast is 10:07 minutes. Meanwhile, the second podcast is talking about idols. The duration of the second podcast is 06:42 minutes. The podcasts were accompanied with student’s workbook and teacher’s book. The student’s workbook contains transcripts and answer keys so that the tenth graders can check their work and monitor the progress. The teacher’s book includes lesson plan in addition to transcripts and answer keys.            It is suggested that the English teachers of tenth graders use the product of this study for teaching listening since it can engage the students better so that they will become more active in learning and practicing listening skills. It is also suggested that further researchers develop podcasts of different text types and topics which are suitable with the students’ level

Prasetyo, Wahyu Gusti. 2017. Ambiguity of News Headlines on Fox News. Thesis. Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I) Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi, M.A, (II) Dr. Johannes Ananto Prayogo, M.Pd., M.Ed.   Keywords: ambiguity, news headlines, Fox News.               An ambiguity in the news headlines can distort the perception of readers and also make it more interesting. Considering this, studies on the issue of ambiguity on news headlines have grown significantly. This research is aimed to investigate types of ambiguity in the news headlines and explore probable reasons underlying the ambiguity.             This research used a descriptive qualitative research design. To answer the research questions, 30news headlines were collected from Fox News World program in the period of October 1st – November 1st2017 as the main source of data. To analyze the data, Ullmann’s (1977) theory was used to identify the types of ambiguity on the news headlines and semantics and syntax were also used to further analyze the ambiguity of news headlines. The analyses have revealed that 16 news headlines, out of 30, were found to be ambiguous. The ambiguity includes 13 lexical ambiguities and 3 grammatical ambiguities. Related to the lexical ambiguity, the findings show that it occurred in the form of adjective by 6.25%, noun by 31.25%, and verb by 43.75%. The grammatical ambiguity, moreover, occurred in the form of noun phrase by 18.75%. Related to the probable reasons underlying the ambiguity, by referring to Van Dijk’s (1989) investigation on structures of editorials, the analyses show that the ambiguous news headlines are possibly employed by the writers to attract the readers, lead the readers to certain angles, and distort the information. When it deals with serious political issues, the ambiguity is possibly used to imbue the news with certain political beliefs and significances which function to steer the opinions of the readers. Considering the practical and theoretical values of this study, the present researcher suggests that the linguistic students use this as a reference about ambiguity of news headlines. For future researchers wishing to carry out research like this, it is suggested that they explore more data and study the ambiguity differently using other sources of news headlines or they can use other theories too see ambiguity from different perspectives

ABSTRAK   SUMMARY Zulaekha, Tia. 2018. The Use of WPS in Developing Students’ Writing Skill and Their Responses in the Implementation. Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisor: (I) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien, M.Pd. (II) Dr. Enny Irawati, M.Pd Keywords: writing skill, writing activity, write pair share, point illustration explanation, peer editing, recount text Most of language learners in Indonesia mostly get difficulties writing in English. They are usually confused with what they will write and how to generate their ideas into a written form. The problems above were also found in VIII-A class of SMPN 2 Malang. The time allotment for English lesson is mostly used for reading, listening and speaking activities. It means that the time allotment to learn writing is limited. Writing is taught only two until four times in one semester as the students are more often asked to do exercises in the coursebook than being asked to produce their writing. Based on the result of the preliminary study, it was found that most of students’ writing were still in ‘fair’ level and their writing scores were still low. These facts revealed that most of students were still confused of what will be written and how to generate it writtenly. To solve these problems, the researcher implemented Write Pair Share (WPS) as stages in writing activity and Point Illustration Explanation (PIE) as a writing technique. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research. The researcher conducted this study in one cycle consisting of five meetings. The subject of this study were 28 students of VIII-A class at SMPN 2 Malang. The instruments used in this study were writing test, observation checklists, field notes, and questionnaires. The data obtained from the instruments were analyzed and compared to the indicators of the criterion of success, namely: (1) the minimum of their average score must be  ≥77, (2) at least 93% of the students must get score ≥77. The research findings revealed that the students average score after the implementation was 80.4. This indicated that the class average score was more than the standart minimum score (77). Besides, 93% of the students or 26 of them got score 77 and more than 77. The result of this findings indicated that this study have met the criterion of success. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the use of WPS could improve the ability of VIII-A students at SMPN 2 Malang in writing a recount text. This study proposes some suggestions for the English teachers and further researchers. For the English teacher of SMPN 2 Malang, the result of this study can be a consideration to implement WPS strategy as a solution to students writing problems in class. Last but not least, the researcher is welcome for future researchers to make this study as a reference to conduct further studies in solving students’ writing problems

ABSTRAK   Aulia, Gita. 2017. An Analysis in theUse of Mechanics in the Second Semester Students’ Writing in Universitas Negeri Malang. Undergraduate Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I) Dr. Enny Irawati, M.Pd., (II) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono, M.Pd., M.A., Ph.D.   Keywords: writing, mechanics, punctuation, Paragraph Writing Learning English requires all the skills commonly used in learning a language, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. However, many students regard writing as a difficult skill to learn and practice. Second semester students of the Department of English in Universitas Negeri Malang take Paragraph Writing course as one of the required courses.Despite the fact that writing mechanics have been taught to students since their early school years, the second semester students still somehow make a lot of mechanical mistakes in their writing.Reflecting upon that problem, a study was conducted to knowthe kinds of mechanical mistakes that the students made during their writing process and how often they made the same mistakes. This study used exploratory sequential mixed methods design. There were 23 students involved in this study. The data were obtained by collecting their written products on the themes provided. Each student submitted two paragraphs: one paragraph for one theme. The themes were about their family and a fable. The data were analyzed by using the tabulation form which contained the types of mechanics to group the mechanical mistakes found in the students’ written products. Analysisof the data resulted in the finding of 223 mistakes. The mistakes belonged to mistakes in spelling, capitalization, numbers, the hyphen, and punctuations. The most frequent type of mistakes found is those in the use of the comma with 74 mistakes, while the least frequent is those in the use of the ellipsis mark and the question mark, both in which occurred 1 time. Knowledge aboutwriting mechanics isvery important to master and remember, asplenty of mechanical errorsand mistakes that deeply affect sentence meaning could be made ifnot careful. It is suggested for the students to be more motivated and serious in learning and writing mechanically correct texts, and for the teachers in schools to encourage andemphasize more in teaching students how to apply the correct mechanics in their writing. For English lecturers, it is advised to encourage their students to submit hand-written texts instead of typing them. For future researchers, this research could be used as a reference to conduct similar studies in writing mechanics

The development of technology today along with the popularity of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a significant impact on administering national examination in Indonesia. It is then realized in the form of Computer Based National Examination (CBNE). However, the implementation of CBNE in 2018 was still facing various problems including problems related to technical issues and problems related to the content of the examination. Those problems might cause different perceptions towards CBNE 2018 among students. Thus, the aim of this study is to describe Junior High Schools students’ perceptions towards CBNE 2018 in Malang Municipality; identify problems related to technical issues and problems related to the content of the test encountered by students when taking CBNE 2018; and also investigate strategies used by students to overcome the problems.             The data in this study was quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data was about students’ perception, while the qualitative data was about problems related to technical issues and the content of the test; and strategies used by students to overcome the problems. The students’ perception was described based on three dimensions of Computer Based Assessment Acceptance Model (CBAAM) which were Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceived Usefulness (PU), and Content (CT). The design of this study was an Internet survey using cross-sectional design. The data was collected through a questionnaire which was administered by using an Internet survey service called Google form. The participants were 140 Junior High School students in Malang municipality who had taken CBNE 2018. The quantitative data was analyzed using percentage, while the qualitative data was analyzed using interpretation. The results show that the majority of the respondents in this study had a positive perception towards the implementation of CBNE 2018 based on PEOU, PU, and CT. In other words, they had a strong perception that taking CBNE 2018 was free of effort, the CBT system for English NE 2018 could enhance their job performance, and the questions in English CBNE 2018 were useful, clear and understandable.             Despite the fact that most of the respondents in this study had positive perceptions towards the implementation of CBNE 2018, various problems related to technical issues were identified, such as inadequate computer devices including the mouse and keyboard, problems with adjusting the screen brightness, unstable Internet connection, problems with login, token was delivered late, supply electricity interruption, server down and insufficient time allocation. In addition, the main strategy used by students to overcome those various technical issues was asking for help from the proctor, technician, or test supervisor. It implies that the role of proctor, technician, and test supervisor is very important in the implementation of CBNE 2018.             Besides problems related to the technical issues, problems related to the content of English national examination were also identified in the implementation of CBNE 2018. The problems include more difficult questions, unable to understand the reading passages, more difficult vocabularies, the pictures were not clear enough, the font was too small, inability to take notes or underline some words, incompatible with the blueprint, and low English proficiency. In addition, various strategies used by students to overcome those problems were also identified such as thinking harder, answering randomly, cheating, answering as they can, answering the easiest one, reading the passages more than once or skipping it, guessing the meaning by relating the words with the context, wearing glasses, taking distance slightly from the computer screen, taking a short break, and praying. Moreover, the respondents realized that they should study English harder in order to perform better in CBNE in the future. In summary, the implementation of CBNE 2018 was considered good enough even though there were several things that should be improved for better implementation in the future.ABSTRAK   The development of technology today along with the popularity of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a significant impact on administering national examination in Indonesia.
