ABSTRACT : This research aims to identify the factors of appropriation of development projects and programs financed by foreign donors in rural Haitian communities. To carry out this study, the researcher used autopraxeography, a method that makes it possible to produce knowledge from experience. The author made use of the pragmatic constructivist epistemological paradigm (PECP). Indeed, the researcher's experiences have been highlighted from a reflective work (Albert, 2017, p. 73). Based on the literature related to this study and the synthesis of the interpretations, the researcher highlighted the general conclusion with salient points surrounded by the methods likely to affect the effectiveness or the appropriation of programs or projects of assistance to the development. Thus, the results show that the projects best suited to socio-cultural realities result in positive results in favor of all actors. Indeed, the circumstances that influence the appropriation of development projects in rural areas in Haiti are varied and depend on the phase of the life cycle in question, because in the first stage, the emphasis must be on the need's populations. At the planning and execution stages, listening to people is the most important factor. On the other hand, the satisfaction of the populations is the element most at the end of the project. Finally, the following elements are likely to influence the results of a project and programs, commonly called factors of appropriation of projects or development programs, they are : 1- Taking into account the real needs of the populations, 2-Managing the projects and programs in cooperation, 3- Communication and raising awareness of the actors, 4- Taking into account the social level of the populations, 5- Commitment of the actors on the effectiveness and efficiency of the aid, 6- Competence of the project manager, 7- Circumstances of the execution of the projects, 8- Involvement and participation of the populations, 9- Reputation of the actors and the disbursement strategy and 10- Vigilance of the populations in the project. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Keywords: Ownership, criteria and success factors, project, program, development aid, participatory development, involvement, effectiveness, and efficiency
ABSTRACT : In the St. Lawrence River, rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) relies on the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) as its main nursery area, with its primary prey being the calanoid copepod complex of Eurytemora affinis. Representing a critical link between primary production and higher trophic levels, this cryptic species complex serves as a significant food source for fish larvae. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the contribution of Eurytemora affinis and E. carolleeae to the diet of early stages of rainbow smelt in the heterogeneous habitat mosaic of the MTZ, marked by strong salinity gradients. During the summer of 2021, we conducted four surveys (June-August), sampling an area of 100 km from Quebec City to Anse Sainte-Anne, revealing heterogeneous distributions of smelt and copepod prey. The oligohaline habitat (0.5-5.0 PSU) exhibited the highest mean abundances, with 20.41 ± 10.82 larvae per 100 m³. As the rainbow smelt larvae progressed in their development, we observed ontogenetic shifts in their diet with Eurytemora spp. comprising 76% to 93% in June and July, and with the mysid Neomysis americana accounting for 80% of the diet in August (oligohaline habitat). Through a newly developed SYBR green qPCR assay, we revealed for the first time that E. affinis was the most exploited resource along the salinity gradient with 72% of stomachs presenting only this cryptic species. However, when E. carolleae was dominant in the environment, a high proportion of E. carolleeae was also detected in larval diet (e.g., mid-June), suggesting that larvae exploit the most abundant food resource available. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to explore the selectivity within the cryptic complex and its impact on the growth and survival of rainbow smelt. Understanding these aspects will provide valuable insights into the intricate ecological dynamics within the MTZ and the delicate balance that supports the early life stages of rainbow smelt in the St-Lawrence Estuary.
ABSTRACT : The relationship between nature and humanity is in the spotlight in the 21st century, while the proximity of coastal zones is one of the most attractive areas in the world for human settlements due to their unique offer of environmental (social, economical, and ecological) goods. Notwithstanding, nearshore areas host diverse ecologically relevant and sensitive habitats. In this context, while forming the basis of trophic chains, primary producers such as phytoplankton and foundation species of coastal vegetated habitats constitute key organisms of such ecosystems. Specifically in northern high latitudes, the rising temperatures and sea-ice loss due to global warming are about twice as fast as in mid-latitudes (Arctic amplification), with consequences for ocean, coastal and nearshore processes. Because of the natural wide spatial and temporal variability of oceanographic and watershed processes acting over nearshore areas, the ability to monitor and manage them often represent a challenge for stakeholders, scientists, and decision-makers. Earth observation satellites (EOS) present themselves as a singular tool to address spatial and temporal variabilities of primary producers in nearshore areas. However, the possibility to retrieve biogeochemical information of surface waters from EOS applications requires knowledge about their optical properties. The main objectives of this thesis were to establish a baseline of knowledge about the optical properties and develop remote sensing tools to better understand the variability of primary producers in nearshore waters of subarctic and cold temperate environments. This thesis is composed of three research papers using a combination of in situ (ship-based) and satellite-based approaches to achieve these goals. The studied areas included nearshore subregions of the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL), Eastern Canada, being the coastal areas near the Bay of Sept-Îles (BSI), the Manicouagan (MAN) Peninsula, Forestville (FV), Rimouski bay (RIB), and L'Isle Verte bay (IVE). In the first article, BSI, MAN and FV subregions were investigated using (distinct) in situ sampling design strategies, and all field campaigns collected optical and biogeochemical quantities (molar and dry-mass concentrations) to investigate their major relationships. The bio-optical properties of nearshore waters of the north part of EGSL are under the influence of major (or local) organic matter-rich riverine discharges. Specifically, it was shown that the absorption coefficient of the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) strongly dominates the absorption budget, and that these waters have very low mass-specific backscattering coefficient. These factors characterize a strongly light-absorbing and weakly light-scattering medium, resulting in low reflectance values and with implications for the applications of optical remote sensing approaches. Despite the dominance of terrigenous absorbing components, the biomass of phytoplankton was not negligible (chlorophyll-a concentrations = 1 mg m-3). Overall, the sampling strategy revealed a complex interplay of spatial (between and within subregions) and temporal (seasonal, synoptic, and circadian) variabilities acting of nearshore EGSL and influencing its optical properties. In the second article, we hypothesized that the composition of major phytoplankton assemblages in BSI subregion will covary with temperature and the bulk optical properties of the environment. The in situ sampling revealed a strong seasonal (spring to autumn) pattern modulating the composition of phytoplankton assemblages, while statistically significant differences of temperature and bio-optical properties between the different groups were observed. Before the freshet, spring bloom was dominated by large (microphytoplankton) cells (diatoms), and the succession followed a shift towards nanophytoplankton and picophytoplankton cells throughout summer and fall. Whilst confirming the hypotheses, it was also demonstrated the capability to retrieve the major phytoplankton assemblages rom EOS sensors, with possible applications to monitoring programs. The third article used a long-term time series (~40 years) from EOS (Landsat missions) to address the interannual and decennial variability of seagrass (eelgrass, Zostera marina L.) meadows coverage in intertidal areas of BSI, MAN, RIB, and IVE subregions of EGSL. From the methodological aspect, knowledge about the variabilities of optical properties and tides were essential to optimize EOS approaches. The area of the meadows presented a significantly increasing trend (10 to 20-fold greater than the initial surface area, considering the period from 1984 to 2022). Particularly, in MAN and BSI subregions the observed growing trend was towards land. Overall, this thesis focused on the retrieval of the spatial distribution of two important primary producers (i.e., phytoplankton assemblages and seagrass meadows) using EOS approaches in changing EGSL nearshore subregions. An avenue of possibilities remains to be explored through incorporating EOS approaches in nearshore EGSL zones in social-ecological systems, where the environment and its interaction with the anthroposphere can be modeled and predicted. Nonetheless, this thesis represents a first step towards a more representative sampling of these two important environmental variables. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : nearshore habitats, bio-optical properties, CDOM, backscattering coefficient, phytoplankton seasonal succession, remote sensing, eelgrass meadows, Zostera marina, Landsat, Saint Lawrence Estuary. --
ABSTRACT : This research aims to understand the conditions that lead towards reconciling with one's life and history after experiencing sexual abuse. Conducted from a first-person perspective (Vermersch, 2000), the author first seeks to comprehend how their legal denunciation and experience within the judicial process did not provide the sought-after solace. Then, by exploring a unique and original research field, intersecting notably with the poetry of Kasàlà (Kabuta, 2010) and the learning community (Rugira, 2008; Rubatier, 2019; Payette, 2000; Payette and Champagne, 1996), they strive to uncover the conditions that allow for a more serene journey towards reconciliation experienced both in relation to oneself and to significant individuals in their life. This heuristic research, inspired by phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches (Moustakas, 1968; Polanyi, 1969), is situated within a comprehensive and interpretive paradigm. The analysis is conducted in a written mode (Paillé & Mucchielli, 2021) based on an itinerant journal (Barbier, 1997).
« Eastern Canada quick clays (QC) are studied to evaluate the sorption and desorption capacities of three model contaminants of heavy metals and dimethylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and 9,10-dimethylatedanthracene (DMA). The main objectives of this research project are to better understand sorption behavior of QC by evaluating kinetics sorption, sorption and desorption isotherms, and the sequestration capacity. The effects of temperature and salinity on sorption behaviors are also studied. Kinetics sorption and isotherm sorption / desorption were carried out at different temperatures and salinities. Kinetics sorption results show a fast sorption of contaminants followed by a maximum uptake achieved in 10 minutes for metals and in 24 hours for DMA. Freundlich adsorption constant values (kf) obtained ranged from 4.17 to 31.5 mg·g 1·(L·mg-1)1/n for Cu, from 0.81 to 1.07 mg·g 1·(L·mg-1)1/n for Cd and 0.38 to 2.11 mg·g 1·(L·mg-1)1/n for DMA. These results show high QC adsorption capacities which constant values are 2.5 times (Cd) to 10 times (Cu) higher than those obtained with montmorillonite, a clay normally used as a reference for its good adsorption capacities. QC show a sorption hysteresis with Cu, suggesting high sequestration. Increasing salinity increases the adsorption of DMA kd values by 1.83 folds, suggesting a higher affinity between DMA and the QC. On the other hand, kd show a strong decrease of Cd adsorbed on QC probably caused by salt ions competition for sites. An increase in temperature from 4 to 20°C shows adsorption capacities increasing by 1.32 to 2.57 times for the three adsorbates. Results presented in this work show a strong affinity, high adsorption and sequestration of Cu, Cd and DMA on QC. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Quick Clay, adsorption, desorption, hysteresis, sequestration, metals, PAH, kinetics, isotherm, temperature, salinity. »-
ABSTRACT : The numismatic collection from the Circular monument of Carthage consists of monetary and non-monetary artefacts gathered during the twelve exacavation campaigns (1976-2002) directed by Pierre Senay, then professor at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR). In 2011, he entrusted the collection for study purposes to Nicolas Beaudry, professor of history and archaeology at Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR). The collection had already been the subject of a few studies published in the form of catalogue, then of several successive approaches to treatment and inventory, not all of which were successful. This master's thesis offers an exhaustive portrait of the collection through a database as well as a study of the artefacts according to an archaeological, historical and numismatic approach. Through the analysis and interpretation of artefacts from a multidisciplinary perspective, this dissertation makes an unprecedented contribution to the research of recent decades on the site of the Circular monument and contributes modestly to the numismatic history of Carthage during Late Antiquity (IVth to VIIth century). The data from the collection, in the light of the studies carried out in this thesis, have made it possible to better understand the economic articulation of the site of the Circular monument while supplementing the results delivered by the various archeological operations carried out by Pierre Senay from 1976 to 2002. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Circular monument, Carthage, archaeology, numismatics, Late Antiquity, Roman,Vandal and Byzantine periods
ABSTRACT : Habitat loss and global warming are among the major threats to biodiversity worldwide, with significant impacts on the distribution of large mammals. The trailing edge of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) distribution in Quebec moved northward drastically since 1850. Different factors could be at play in this phenomenon, and identifying them is an essential step towards efficient conservation practices. Our hypothesis stated that the current distribution range of boreal caribou results partially from the influence of climate change, but that the latter is not a major factor in the contemporary northward contraction of caribou range. We modelled the climate niche of boreal caribou and then hindcasted the area where climate conditions were fit for caribou occurrence for several past time steps. Discrepancies between the positions of the southern limit of the hindcasted areas and the southern limit of the past boreal caribou distributions allowed us to quantify the impact of climate change on the northward movement observed in caribou's trailing edge of distribution through time. Our results show that about 17% of this northward trend can be attributed to climate change since 1850. This figure sheds light on the predominant effect of the anthropogenic pressures that transformed the land during the 19th and 20th centuries, such as urbanization, road development, and most importantly forest cuts leading to the loss of old coniferous forests, compared to the effect of climate change. Contrary to popular belief on boreal caribou decline in Quebec, climate change alone appears to be far from enough to explain the contraction of the distribution range of this large mammal species. This thesis will hopefully encourage researchers to conduct more conservation projects focused on the protection of boreal caribou habitat across the province, as this decision-making power is much more available to us than the one needed to act on global warming. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Anthropogenic disturbances, Boreal caribou, Climate niche, Distribution range, Global warming, Habitat loss, Niche models, Quebec
Early Career Nurses' Need Fulfillment Profiles: A Longitudinal Person-Centered Perspective on their Nature, Stability, Determinants and Consequences
In this study, we investigate the nature of Canadian early career (0 to 3 years) nurses’ (N = 704; 87.8% female, aged 20 to 52) psychological need fulfillment profiles, accounting for the global and specific level of satisfaction and frustration of their needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Our adoption of a longitudinal design (12 months, three time points with n = 626 at Time 1, 459 at Time 2, and 370 at Time 3) made it possible to test the within-person and within-sample stability of these profiles. To obtain a more in depth understanding of these profiles, we investigated the role of job demands and resources in the prediction of profile membership, and several work-related outcomes of these profiles. Latent transition analysis revealed five profiles differing in global and specific need fulfillment levels. These profiles remained stable over the 12 months, although nurses tended to transition into less fulfilled profiles over time. Nurses’ perceptions of job demands and resources shared well-differentiated relations with the profiles, and more fulfilled profiles tended to report more adaptive functioning and well-being at work. -- Keywords : Self-determination theory (SDT) ; Basic psychological needs ; Profiles Nurse ; Job demands ; Job resources ; Early career ; Well-being
A first glimpse of larval ecology of halibut species in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada
Knowledge of the larval ecology of winter-spawning fish from the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, remains scarce due to the seasonal ice cover that prevents ichthyoplankton sampling using conventional methods. Two winter-spawning species, Atlantic halibut (AH, Hippoglossus hippoglossus) and Greenland halibut (GH, Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), support the most important groundfish fisheries of this area. In March 2020, the authors captured 10 halibut larvae ranging in size from 5 to 14 mm during an opportunistic survey in the GSL onboard an icebreaking vessel. Of these, eight were AH and two GH. Judging by their very small size, the larvae were only a few days old, suggesting that the spawning grounds are close to the capture sites. This effort constitutes a first step in validating the putative spawning areas for these two important GSL stocks. This knowledge is important for the conservation and sustainable management of these fisheries. -- Keywords : Atlantic halibut ; Greenland halibut ; larval distribution ; larval ecology ; spawning ground ; winter ecology
The advocacy process in Canadian community health nursing: A collaborative ethnography
Aims
To shed light on the process of advocacy in the context of community health nursing, through a methodology inspired by the epistemologies of the South.
Design
We conducted a collaborative ethnography in a community health centre in Canada.
Methods
de Sousa Santos' epistemologies of the South, a typology of advocacy and main themes from historic research informed the methodology. Data were collected between 2016 and 2018 through 420 h of fieldwork observations and three group discussions, including a collective process to co-construct interpretations with participants. Twenty-one nurses participated in the study.
Results
Nurses had sufficient work flexibility to practice advocacy actions focused on individuals and groups. They also engaged in attempts at policy reform in the form of defending access to appropriate care and changing the mode of care organization. However, these were curbed by bureaucracy and administrative rules, resulting in the eventual dismissal of health promotion actions and experiences of moral distress.
Conclusion
Despite the political climate of their work environment impeding social justice agendas, nurses' advocacy practices showed a persistence of moral values and ideals in coherence with the regional nursing legacy.
Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care
Acting at the organizational level and involving field nurses in decision making are potential avenues for increasing policy advocacy efficacy.
Impact
Examining contexts through another epistemic lens and methods of research drawing on history and anthropology has shed light on a process of advocacy. This research shows that organizations need to equip themselves with mechanisms to promote the sharing of realities between nurses, thereby building collective advocacy.
Reporting Method
The research adheres to the EQUATOR guidelines with SRQR and COREQ methods.
