The Effectiveness of Telenomus remus (Nixon) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) for Controling Welsh Onion Pest Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of T. remus as biocontrol agent for S. exigua. The study was conducted by releasing a set of T. remus females on potted onion plants that have been attacked by S. exigua. Three different parasitism level was artificially created by releasing different numbers of females: low rate parasitism (release of 4 adult females), moderate parasitism (7 females) and high parasitism level (11 females). The result of this study showed that T. remus is effective to control S. exigua population. Up to 48.2% of S. exigua. population was able to be suppressed by the high parasitism level. Rate of parasitisation was more when more adult female T. remus was released. Release of 11 adult female of T. remus can increase the population level of the parasitoid up to 24.1 times than the initial population. This express that T. remus is a mortality factor which can regulate the population of S. exigua. However, the succesfull parasitisation of T. remus is also dependent on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, food, and host suitability. KEY WORDS: Telenomus remus, Spodoptera exigua, welsh onion, biological control, egg parasitoid

Agricultural intensification cause negative effect to insect diversity including beneficial insect such as natural enemies and pollinators. Habitat management through habitat heterogeneity is an alternative approach to protect insect diversity in agriculture area. In this study, we investigated the effect of habitat heterogeneity integrated with different age of crop plant in urban agricultural landscape to the ant diversity. The field research was conducted in agricultural area in Carang Pulang Village, Dramaga, Bogor. In around 6 ha area of rice field, grouped into four blocks which each block has different habitat condition and age of rice plant. In bunds of each block were put six pitfall traps with minimum distance 20 meter from each other. Ants were collected weekly from 6 until 12 weeks after planting to standardize the bunds condition. In total 22 species from 4 subfamilies of ants were recorded from this research. Iridomyrmex sp.01 and Odontoponera sp.01 are the common species which always found in each block and in different age of rice plant. There are no correlation between the distance of pitfall traps and similarity of ant species. In addition, habitat conditions surrounding rice field (block) significantly effect to the ant diversity. However, age of rice plant have no effect to the ant diversity. KEY WORDS: Ant diversity, rice field, pitfall trap, habitat heterogeneit

The continous presence of dengue virus infection presents a serious health problem in many tropical areas of the world because of the severe and often fatal disease in children. Dengue viruses are transmitted to human through the biting of infected mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. This paper reported the nocturnal of biting activity of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in several areas of Indonesia. Natural population of Aedes was collected by bare leg collection and resting collection from 18:00 to 06:00 out door and indoor. The biting activities of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus occurred throughout the night from 18:00 to 05:50 out door and indoor in Cikarawang, Babakan, and Cibanteng Kabupaten Bogor (2004); Cangkurawuk Darmaga Bogor (2005, 2007); Pramuka island, Pari island, Kepulauan Seribu (2008); Gunung Bugis, Gunung Karang, Gunung Utara Balikpapan (2009); and Kayangan, Lombok Utara (2009). These results showed that the biting activities of Ae. aegypti dan Ae. albopictus did not only occur diurnally but also nocturnally.. KEY WORDS: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, nocturnal biting activit

A study on the effect of abaticidal ovitrap on Aedes aegypti egg findings was carried out in Cipinang Muara, East Jakarta from October 1997 until January 1998. Twenty five houses were designed as treatment objects. Ovitrap were sit indoor and outdoor in each house. Seventy five houses were used as buffer. People in this area were trained on how to set up and to manage their ovitrap. Control area in the same "Rukun Warga (RW)" was selected and treated with the same way. The result has shown that egg number from the treated area has significantly reduced and less than the egg number in the control area. The mean the number of eggs found in the first year was 20.8 eggs, while in the second year was 38.8 eggs. The average ovitrap index (01) in the first year was 38.8 'Yo, while in the second year was 49.4 %. Abate did not affect the activity of oviposition and the number oflaid eggs.KEYWORD: Abaticidal ovitrap, Aedes aegypti and Abat

Formulation of Calophyllum soulattri Bark Extract and Residual Activity against Crocidolomia pavonana Larvae. One option to lessen the problems arising from the use of synthetic insecticides is to exploit plants that have insecticidal activities, such as species of Calophyllum (Clusiaceae). The study has been conducted to prepare insecticidal formulation from C. soulattri bark extract and to evaluate their residual activity against C. pavonana. Formulation prepared by using emulsifier, solvent, and sticking agent. Colour, acidity and emulsion stability were recorded as physic-chemical character of formulation. The result showed that the formulation of C. soulattri bark extract was stable, and their pH was normal. Bioassay of residual activity was done using leaf-residual method. Formulation of bark extract of 66 EC sprayed in suspension concentration of 1% on potted broccoli plant had residual activity around 70.7%-72% with range of half-lives of 9.4-9.6 days. KEY WORDS: Calophyllum soulattri, formulation, half-lives, residual activity

The lady beetle, Menochilus sexmaculatus is one of the biological control agents that can be used to control aphids. Presently, there is a lack of information about the effectiveness of this beetle to control aphids. The objective of this research was to study the functional response of M. sexmaculatus on Aphis gossypii at different ages of plants. All preys were exposed to one M. sexmaculatus adult for an hour at five different densities of aphids (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 individuals) is four different ages of chilli plants (2,4,6, and 8 weeks). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and logistic regression to determine the type of functional response. The results showed that the ability of M. sexmaculatus to prey was not significant at 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 weeks old chilli plants. At 2 week old chilli plants M. sexmaculatus showed type I of functional response, while at 4, 6 and 8 weeks the functional response were type III. T. armigera is one of the potential egg parasitoids. The aim of this research was to study the effects of low temperatures ( 9ºC and 15ºC) on the fitness of T. armigera. The design of the experiments is a factorial design with two factors (temperature and age of parasitoid), with 10 replicates. Fitness were measured based on the survival, fertility, size, sex ratio, lifespan and fecundity. Result showed that the emergence of T. armigera was postponed by 2-5 days under low temperatures. Temperatures had a more significant effect than age of parasitoid. The postponement of adult emergence is very useful in regard to field application schedules. Percentage of adults emergence, sex ratio, egg productivity, fecundity tended to decrease under low temperatures, the length of female adult wings varied in each treatment and it tended to be shorter in 9ºC, while the width of female adult heads was almost similar in all treatment except in untreated control. These characters are very important in determining the fitness of the parasitoid in the field.KEY WORDS: Trichogrammatoidea armigera, egg parasitoid, temperature, fitness, age
