Can we use miRNA to certify raw milk from fresh grass-fes cows?
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding RNAs that hybridize mRNA by complementary sequences. miRNAs act as key regulators of diverse biological and developmental processes in eukaryotes, including
cell proliferation and differentiation, apoptosis, immune system development, and immune responses.
Their presence in all tissues and organic fluids make them good, non-invasive biomarkers for milk quality.
We and others have demonstrated that miRNA profiles found in raw milk change according to the cow’s diet and/or the milk production system. Our aim here is to study miRNA differential expression in milk in order to authenticate the production system of the milk. Tank milk from dairy farms managed under different production systems in Asturias (north of Spain) was collected, milk fractions separated (fat and cells), and total RNA isolated. Differential expression of previously identified miRNAs cells was analysed and compared among different production systems. Bta-mir-2285e was identified as a possible miRNA marker of milk produced by cows fed on fresh-grass. This study sets a precedent for the use miRNAs as

ENGLISH: The deposits of the complex of St. Januarius at Capodimonte contain numerous artefacts pertaining to the personal furnishings of the deceased, the grave goods or the setting up of the graves. The finds, coming from the burials investigated at the end of the last century, have remained largely unpublished so far and only recently the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology started their classification in anticipation of the edition of the old archaeological excavations. Pending to complete the restoration of the more than 1300 coins discovered during those excavations, here we present the late antique items (accompanied by images and catalogue) that it has been possible to identify among the about 250 samples so far subject to cleaning and conservation. The coins – mostly found during archaeological investigations in the upper level of the catacomb – are dated between the end of the third century AD and the beginning of the fifth, being the oldest documented at St. Januarius. These are mostly emissions certificates of the mint of Rome, present continuously from Gallienus to Valentinianus with a slight quantitative peak of emissions of the Constantinian age. The holes for suspension shows that some coins became jewels, excluding the use for the sole practice of the obol at Charon, which is well attested. The analysis of the coins enables the improvement of knowledge on the circulation and the funerary use of the currency in naples in the Late Antiquity, providing at the same time new information on the attendance of the catacomb of St. Januarius, the most important of the early Christian cemeteries of the city
ENGLISH: Two surveys on medieval political thinking have been recently published by two Italian pub- lishers (2018-2019). The authors have intersected philosophical, historical and legal approaches to reveal the richness and diversity of political thought from the 5th to the 12th centuries. The selected topics concern: 1) the origin of power and its legitimacy; 2) the question of the limits of political power; 3) reflections on the ideal form of government and on the resistance it may face; and 4) conceptions relating to the place and role of law, the relationship between the Church and the regimen, and the status of persons and property as mirrored by political power. The works examined by the authors show that the writings are more embedded in the context than we can fathom, thus expressing the evolution and diversity of medieval political thinking
ENGLISH: The paper aims at proving the existence of a category of medieval legal fiction apparently unexplored by legal historical studies: the fiction of canon law. Starting from the analysis of a rich and complex gloss written around 1170 on the Decretum Gratiani, the paper focuses on the following issues: the impact of French theological debates of the 12th century devoted to fiction in canon law; fiction as an instrument employed by the medieval canonists to highlight cases of non-coincidence between subjective intention and objective result; the interaction between subjective fiction and the medieval idea of subjective nature, in opposition to the objective characteristics of nature and fiction in Roman law; the contribution of canon law ficiton to the 13th-century concept of plenitudo potestatis, against the background of Ernst H. Kantorowicz’s thought
ENGLISH: The aim of the article is to demonstrate that the propensity for the ethnic classification of places and people increased in Lombardy under the rule of the Sforza during the fifteenth century: national denominations, often used in a neutral way, but soon with an emphasis on the negative traits associated with barbarism, occur in state correspondence. This lexicon thus projects the political relationship over not only a customary tradition, but also a natural background, because by nature an individual belonged to what was called a nation and because it is from nature that the salient features of the nation derive. The hypothesis is that this change is connected to general cultural processes of the Renaissance, but – above all – to decisive political transformations that took place in the fifteenth century: a strengthening of the Italian diplomatic horizon, with the establishment of the Italic League, and the deterioration of the relationships between the state of Milan and its neigh- bors, Switzerland and Grisons. Of particular importance were the new strategies of legitimizing the central authority through the ideological transformation of the relationship of obedience, stabilizing the state’s power over its subjects as being almost unnegotiable as nature in itself
ENGLISH: The essay reconstructs the stories of three aristocratic women by focusing on their role in managing their families’ estates. The first, Mabilia de Lecavelis, is a young widow who tries to reassemble the real estate property of her husband’s parental group with the aim of strengthening the position of her only son. Aimelina, daughter of Guglielmo Rataldo, whom we can observe in the same years, hails from a family of merchants and is given in marriage to Fulco de Castello, scion of an important consular family. The will of the latter, and other documents that show the two spouses acting in unison, suggest that the two were bound by sincere affection. The case of Simona comitissa Fieschi, is peculiar: attested as guardian of her grandchildren towards the end of the thirteenth century, she tries to fulfil her deceased son’s decision to deny one of his descendants, a Church man, his portion of the inheritance. These three cases show clearly how women played an active part in strengthening the patrimonial projects of the families they married into
Chronologie de Santa Maria Novella (1291-1319)
The identification of all the friars active in Santa Maria Novella on a regular basis or only temporarily is a puzzling issue, due to the high mobility of Dominican friars as well as the complexities of the internal organization of the convent. This contribution offers a schematic chronology of the Florentine Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella between 1291 and 1319. For each year, the prior, the main lector, the lector of the Sentences, the students, and other friars active in the convent are listed, together with further information about the major events taking place at the convent
At the turn of the fourteenth century (1295-1301), the Florentine Dominican Remigio de’ Girolami produced a collection of essential texts connected to events in Florentine politics that present the testimony of a well-informed intellectual directly involved in the Communal crises. This article proposes to analyze, as a case study, the influence of Remigio’s five sermons on Florentine communal life. His preaching in reaction to the crises shaking Florence happened in dialogue with the institutions and citizens of the Commune. It bears witness to the interactions between Santa Maria Novella and the city of Florence and contributes to the development of the political philosophy of its time
This article analyzes some questiones quodlibetales (1296-1297) delivered by Peter of Trabibus, a Florentine Franciscan of Santa Croce. He reflects on and attempts to regulate Florentine society in times of unprecedented political and economic dynamism. Dealing with the definition of “new” sins, these questions examine tantalizing cases pertaining to economic life outside the convent, and which thus constitute matters of great juridical and political interest. The critical edition of Petrus of Trabibus’ questions 17 to 22, Quodlibet 2, here published for the first time, completes this contribution
