A Mandatory Stop: The Trade of Imported Pottery in Asturias (NW Iberian Peninsula) during the Early Modern Period
This research presents the analysis of 3066 sherds, which were found in thirty-four archaeological excavations carried out across six regions of Asturias (NW of the Iberian Peninsula, Spain). The fragments come from twenty-one different pottery production sites and date between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The archaeological study of this ceramic material has offered new insights into the pottery trade in Asturias during the early modern period. The results of this study help us to reconstruct the historical processes that shaped the society of Asturias in that period.

Spanish embedded question island effects revisited: an experimental study
It is often reported that embedded questions (EQs) are not syntactic islands in Spanish. However, some authors have observed that the acceptability of filler-gap dependencies (FGDs) into Spanish EQs varies with the EQ-embedding verb: FGDs into EQs under responsive verbs (e.g., know) do not result in island effects, but FGDs into EQs under rogative verbs (e.g., ask) do yield island effects. One account attributes the contrast to a structural difference between the two EQs, due to which ask-EQs violate Bounding constraints, but know-EQs do not. In two acceptability studies we investigated the reliability of verb-dependent island effects in EQs introduced by si ‘whether’ and cuándo ‘when’. We found no qualitative acceptability differences between ask and know EQ-island sentences, suggesting that the syntactic islandhood of Spanish EQs is not verb-dependent. Nevertheless, average island effects were numerically greater with ask, suggesting the presence of a non-syntactic constraint. In addition, FGDs into whether-EQs were generally acceptable, whereas FGDs into when-EQs obtained unacceptable average ratings and highly variable judgments. We argue that in neither case there is a Bounding constraint violation. Instead we explore alternative potential explanations for the differences in terms of features, presuppositions and processing pressures.Ayuda predoctoral Severo Ochoa del Principado de Asturias (PA-17-PF-BP16105)

The active layer in gravel-bed rivers: An empirical appraisal
The vertical position of the streambed–water boundary fluctuates during the course of sediment transport episodes, due to particle entrainment/deposition and bedform migration, amongst other hydraulic and bedload mechanisms. These vertical oscillations define a topmost stratum of the streambed (i.e. the ‘active layer or active depth’), which usually represents the main source of particles entrained during long and high-magnitude bedload transport episodes. The vertical extent of this layer is hence a capital parameter for the quantification of bedload volumes and a major driver of stream ecology in gravel-bed rivers. However, knowledge on how the active depth scales to flow strength and the nature of the different controls on the relation between the flow strength and the active depth is still scarce. In this paper we present a meta-analysis over active depth data coming from ~130 transport episodes extracted from a series of published field studies. We also incorporate our own field data for the rivers Ebro and Muga (unpublished), both in the Iberian Peninsula. We explore the database searching for the influence of flow strength, grain size, streambed mobility and channel morphology on the vertical extent of the active layer. A multivariate statistical analysis (stepwise multiple regression) confirms that the set of selected variables explains a significant amount of variance in the compiled variables. The analysis shows a positive scaling between active depth and flow strength. We have also identified some links between the active depth and particle travel distances. However, these relations are also largely modulated by other fluvial drivers, such as the grain size of the bed surface and the dominant channel macro-bedforms, with remarkable differences between plane-bed, step-pool and riffle-pool channels.Programa Clarin-Marie Curie COFUND / FICYT (Principado de Asturias); proyectos MorphPeak (CGL2016-78874-R) y MorphHab (PID2019-104979RB-I00), financiados por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Ciencia e Innovación; Programa Serra Húnter (Gobierno Catalán); Departamento de Economía y Conocimiento del Gobierno Catalán a través del Grupo de Investigación Consolidado ‘Fluvial Dynamics Research Group’-RIUS (2017SGR-0459
Engineering Historical Memory and the Interactive Exploration of Archival Documents: The Online Application for Pope Gregory X’s Privilege for the Monastic Community of Mount Sinai (1274) as a Prototype
ENGLISH: This paper presents the results of a research project in Digital Humanities. The project explores archival documents within the online system Engineering Historical Memory (EHM). EHM enables users to read primary historical sources according to different knowledge and expertise levels interactively. Here, as a showcase, the authors present the interdisciplinary research (Diplomatics, History, 3D Visualisation) that empowered the online publication of the original privilege issued by pope Gregory X to the monastic community of Mount Sinai in 1274. The application embodies the following research tools: 1) Digital recomposition and restoration of the photographic survey of the original parchment split into two pieces and held in two different locations in Egypt (Holy Monastery of St Catherine at Mt Sinai, and the Archive of the same monastery in Cairo); 2) Force-directed graph to navigate the diplomatics structure of the papal privilege; 3) Interactive geospatial visualisations of the place names (satellite views and political maps); 4) Search engines for scholarly texts, images, and videos related to the individual diplomatics, historical, and geographical entities itemised in the application; 5) 3D modelling of the lost lead seal of the privilege; 6) Customary web-based visualisation tool for the 3D model of the seal.
The second half of the 13th century is a time of profound changes for the Kingdom of Sicily: the death of Frederick II, the brief reign of Conrad IV, the rise of Manfred and, lastly, the Angevin conquest. These events marked a political shift, and in the frontier region of the Abruzzi the changes involved the construction/reconstruction by the Angevin kings of many towns. The lives and political strategies of the nobles of the region were greatly affected by the new political situation. Social ascent, maintaining the status quo and even simply surviving depended now, more than before, on the relationships with the kings and the new political entities of the Montanea Aprutii

7 ENGLISH: Cortona and Castiglion Fiorentino, neighboring Tuscan cities of Etruscan origin, are united by the complexity of their urban palimpsest. Fortifications and rural buildings dot the territory, weaving a dense network between the valley and mountain areas and taking shape as elements that over time have 'mediated' their perception, guiding their transformations. Through a reinterpretation of this portion of the Val di Chiana, we intend to reflect on the
