Exempla de legibus. Le similitudini giuridiche di Giovanni da San Gimignano
Get PDFITALIANO: Nel libro VIII del Liber de exemplis et similitudinibus rerum, composto entro la prima metà del XIV secolo, il frate predicatore Giovanni da San Gimignano raccoglie una serie di similitudini tratte dall’universo del diritto, che possono essere utilmente impiegate dai predicatori per costruire i loro sermoni. Per compilare tale repertorio Giovanni utilizza e cita puntualmente i testi sia del diritto civile sia del diritto canonico, dimostrando una notevole competenza giuridica. La sua competenza è confermata dai sermoni, in particolare i Sermones funebres, nei quali Giovanni descrive diverse figure dei professionisti del diritto e ne analizza nel dettaglio le prerogative. Tuttavia sia in questa sia in altre raccolte Giovanni non fa quasi mai uso delle similitudini giuridiche che ha catalogato nel Liber de exemplis, ad eccezione della grandiosa immagine del giudizio universale che è tutta modellata sulle caratteristiche del tribunale umano. / ENGLISH: In Book VIII of the Liber de exemplis et similitudinibus rerum, composed in the first half of the Fourteenth century, the Dominican friar John of San Gimignano collects a set of similitudes taken from the legal tradition, which can be usefully employed by preachers to build their sermons. To compile this collection John astutely uses and quotes the texts of both civil and canon law, showing a significant juridical competence. His expertise is confirmed by the sermons, especially the Sermones funebres, in which John describes several legal practitioners by analyzing their prerogatives in detail. However, both in this and in other collections of sermons, John almost never uses the legal similitudes catalogued in the Liber de exemplis, except in the great representation of the Last Judgment which is entirely modeled on the features of the human court

Get PDFGiambologna’s bronze reliefs in the Salviati Chapel in Florence’s church of San Marco, dating from 1581 to 1587, illustrate the life of Archbishop Antoninus (Antonino Pierozzi), who was active in Florence in the mid-fifteenth century. The first scene in the series of six bronze reliefs depicts St. Antoninus Receiving the Dominican Habit from the Blessed Giovanni Dominici. Antoninus appears as a young boy kneeling before his spiritual mentor, Giovanni Dominici (1356-1419), another famous Dominican preacher; two groups of spectators, lay and ecclesiastical, are observing the event. According to Antoninus’ biographers, as a young boy he was much fascinated by Dominici’s sermons, which led him to appeal to Dominici to let him join the Dominican order.
Concerned about Antoninus’ tender age, Dominici decided to test him; he gave him the task of learning Gratian’s Decretum by heart. After a year, Antoninus was examined by Dominici and was able to convince him of his true faith. Dominici then gave the habit to Antoninus – the scene
depicted on the relief. This paper shall address the interrelationships between canon law and public preaching as expressed in the activities of two celebrated Dominican preachers Giovanni Dominici and Antoninus Pierozzi in fifteenth century Florence. It will examine a variety of

General Framework for the Efficient Optimization of Reflectarray Antennas for Contoured Beam Space Applications
No full textThis paper describes a general framework for the optimization of very large reflectarrays for space applications. It employs the generalized Intersection Approach (IA) as optimizing algorithm, integrating a number of techniques that substantially improve the baseline algorithm by accelerating computations while preserving the accuracy of the electromagnetic analysis. In particular, a learning algorithm based on Support Vector Machines (SVMs) is used to obtain a surrogate model of the reflectarray unit cell accelerating the analysis more than three orders of magnitude. For the optimization, the gradient computation is accelerated by employing the technique of differential contributions on the radiated field, which avoids the use of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) in the computation of the far field. Finally, to improve the cross-polarization performance, instead of optimizing the crosspolar pattern, the crosspolar discrimination or crosspolar isolation are optimized, improving both the antenna and algorithm performance. Relevant numerical examples are provided to show the capabilities of the proposed framework for a Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) mission, showing how to design a contoured beam reflectarray with a European footprint with two different coverage zones.
