    No full text
This article discusses the relationship between precocious puberty and the peer relationships of preadolescent girls in public primary schools in Kiambu County, Kenya. This article is based on a case study of twelve selected public primary schools (representing the 12 constituencies) of Kiambu County, Kenya. The sample population was a total of four hundred and ten pre-teenage girls drawn from eight to twelve-year-old girls, and eight class teachers, who were purposively sampled from twelve randomly selected public primary schools in the study location. This was a mixed study that utilized both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The self-rating scale for pubertal maturation and the peer connectedness scale was used to assess for signs of precocious puberty and the quality of peer relationships respectively. In addition, structured interviews and focus group discussions were used to gather additional primary data. The instruments were pilot-tested on a sample of thirty-six respondents who were purposively sampled from three public primary schools in the sample location, and who were omitted from the actual study sample. The quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26, while the qualitative data was analysed using the content analysis approach. Analysed data was presented using both figures and tables. This study found a significant relationship (?=0.258, p=0.011) between precocious puberty and peer relationships among preadolescent girls. This was confirmed by the interview responses and the focus group narratives. The study concluded that earlier pubertal maturation led to strained peer relationships among preadolescent girls. This article recommends that forums to educate children on the stages of development and how to handle each of them be incorporated in the curriculum, to prepare girls for pubertal maturation whenever it occurs

COVID-19: travel intention and restoring travelers\u27 confidence

    No full text
The study examined the non-economic impact of COVID-19 on tourist behaviour, specifically from the perspective of travel intention and restoration of travellers\u27 confidence in travelling again during and post-pandemic. Data were collected with an online questionnaire using the snowball sampling method. A total of 150 respondents completed the questionnaire. A descriptive statistical test was used to analyse the data collected. Research findings reveal a pessimistic outlook on travel intention. Individuals may feel sceptical and wait six months or longer before engaging in tourism activities again, even after the pandemic is brought under control. Most individuals may only be motivated to travel again when the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. It was also discovered that when it comes to the restoration of travellers\u27 confidence, measures that can be seen, calculated, or proved may work best, such as face mask-wearing, social distancing, hand sanitising as well as disinfection and sterilisation. There may also be a perception difference between what service providers perceive as critical and what travellers perceive as indispensable for the restoration of travellers\u27 confidence. It is the latter\u27s perception that will and should matter the most. Research findings are based on travellers\u27 perception, hence the importance of expanding research scope to examine actual travel behaviour when COVID-19 is over and tourism bounces back to "normal.

Bridging the gap between the derivatives and graph sketching in calculus: an innovative game-based learning approach

    No full text
Sketching the graph of mathematical functions using derivatives is a challenging task for undergraduate students who enrol for the first level of calculus course. Before graph plotting, students are required to perform a thorough function analysis using the concepts learned in differentiation. They are then expected to solicit the results obtained to sketch the graph. Nevertheless, the students face great difficulties in achieving this goa

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among non-occupational motorcyclists: what are the issues?

    No full text
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) related to occupational work or termed as WMSDs are the most common health issues that are experienced by many workers. Either due to the human errors or inconvenient and faulty workplaces, this illness has caused both employers and employees great economic losses. However, when observing the prevalence of MSDs among motorcyclists, again the focus was put among those that use motorcycles during their duties making it very much work-related. For example, police riders, postal delivery workers, and currently food delivery services. But how about those non-occupational motorcyclists or commuting workers or students that only use their motorcycle to commute to work, riding to class or weekend-motorcyclists going for prolonged motorcycle rides? Upon this matter, it became the motivation of this study to look into the possibilities of MSDs prevalence especially related to muscle fatigue among these groups of motorcyclists based on a survey and indoor prolonged motorcycle riding simulations that were conducted earlier. This includes how education and proper training could help them to reduce the risk of experiencing MSDs. Outcomes of this study suggested several other MSD issues that are possible to take place involving other body regions and establishing a prolonged riding guideline could educate them to be more aware of this issue. These possible MSDs were found to not being highlighted in work-related MSDs literature with respect to motorcyclists and very few detailed guidelines are available to educate motorcyclists for a much safer prolonged riding which provide gaps for further investigation and validation

Malaysian-Omani Historical and Cultural Relationship: In Context of Halwa Maskat and Baju Maskat

    No full text
The current re-emergence of global maritime activity has sparked initiative from various nations in re-examining their socio-political and cultural position of the region. Often this self-reflection would involve the digging of the deeper origin and preceding past of a nation from historical references and various cultural heritage materials. From this, realisation of the pattern in maintaining an empire or enterprise from the immediate ancestral society could be turned into a model or benchmark in developing the present and future planning of the nation. In the context of Islamic civilisation development along the IndoPacific seaboard the Omani and Malay nations are the two integral entities that had assumed their central role as seafarers, traders, rulers, and travellers in maintaining the dynamics of the region and this happened as early as the Islamic period of the 9th and 10th century CE up till 16th and 19th century when series of European colonial infiltration disrupted greatly the balance of this classical network. The Kitab at-Tarikh Silsilah Negeri Kedah, for instance, presented a vivid story of an Omani captain and his ship in the early 1700s who had met Kedahan people. The cultural heritage of the Arabian Gulf brought mainly by the Omanis could even be found there such as a fabric product known as Baju Maskat and a kind of delicacy known as Halwa Maskat which signal that the cultural hegemony of the Omanis indeed exceeded their immediate political boundary

Emoji and emoticon are the most important inventions in the history of communication. During the early days, emoticon and emoji were perceived as an aid in communication by helping people to clarify the tone of online texts.
