Recognition of moving tracked and wheeled vehicles based on sound analysis and machine learning algorithms
The paper presents results of a preliminary study on verification of the possibility to establish simple methods to process acquired sound signals that were generated by a vehicle in motionto determine its characteristic features for classification as a wheeled or tracked one. The analysis covered 220 signals acquired from real experiment and pre-processed with the use of power spectral density estimation (PSD) and linear prediction coding (LPC). The signal processing methods were used to generate features for which applicability in the classification process was assessed using a statistical method. The set of features was then optimised to reduce the dimensionality of data. Results of recognition obtained with the proposed non-iterative procedures for solving linearly separable problems were compared with results from standard methods, including SVM and k-NN. The developed features as well as selected methods of classification were proposed with respect to the possibility to implement them in low computational power computers for embedded applications
Developing a custom anthropometric test device for experimental evaluation of blast mitigation seats
The use of improvised explosive devices against moving vehicles has been on the rise recently. Their explosions induce devastating effects on vehicle occupants. Blast mitigation seats are used as a counter measure to reduce such harmful effects. This paper presents the scientific work for evaluating the efficacy of blast mitigation seats. The work involves designing and building a custom anthropometric test device (ATD) and a drop tower test facility that is used to simulate the drop of a vehicle from heights up to 10 m. The ATD was equipped with two accelerometersat the neck and at the pelvis. For validation, a multibody dynamics model was developed to simulate the drop test and the results were compared with ones from experiments. An overall root mean square error of 1.28 g was achieved. The test facility was then used to measure the performance of a blast mitigation seat. The results showed that blast mitigation seats reduced peak accelerations on the pelvis and neck areas by 92% and 87% respectively and this translates into moving predicted injuries from fatal to moderate

Modernization of traditional malay house in heritage village of Malacca
Traditional Malay house is undergoing a lot of changes and threatened by modernization where its function, form and structure are affected. A lot of traditional Malay houses today are not considered as original vernacular houses where they are transformed and modernized into mixed design types between traditional and recent modern design. This paper aims to clarify modernization and alteration done, and new internal usage of selected four traditional Malay houses in two heritage villages: Kampung Banda Kaba and Kampung Sidang Seman, in Malacca. Interviews and field investigations were carried out at the selected houses that chosen based on the existing of original structure such as rumah ibu, rumah dapur and raised floor. Findings showed that all four traditional Malay houses had created a new usage style where the owners had altered and extend their houses based on their current needs and lifestyles
