A current ripple driven design methodology for filter inductors in dynamic power converters using adaptive delta-sigma modulation
This paper introduces a design methodology for filter inductors in dynamic power converters using adaptive asynchronous delta-sigma modulation (ADSM). Filter inductors account for a significant proportion of the volume in such converters. Given a specified current ripple amplitude, this paper presents a design methodology for power filter inductors, based on the finding that the current ripple under ADSM is constant. Further using adaptive ADSM, the method can be used to optimize the inductor size, peak current ripple and switching frequency range while maintaining constant switching losses. It is demonstrated that with equivalent setups, the inductor value using adaptive ADSM is reduced by 36% for the same maximum current ripple and switching losses compared to PWM, while the peak current ripple is reduced by 53% compared to ADSM
Storage management with multi-version partitioned BTrees
Modern persistent Key/Value-Stores operate on updatable datasets - massively exceeding the size of available main memory. Tree-based key/value storage management structures became particularly popular in storage engines. B+-Trees allow constant search performance, however write-heavy workloads yield inefficient write patterns to secondary storage devices and poor performance characteristics. LSM-Trees overcome this issue by horizontal partitioning fractions of data — small enough to fully reside in main memory, but require frequent maintenance to sustain search performance.
To this end, firstly, we propose Multi-Version Partitioned BTrees (MV-PBT) as sole storage and index management structure in key-sorted storage engines like Key/Value-Stores. Secondly, we compare MV-PBT against LSM-Trees. The logical horizontal partitioning in MV-PBT allows leveraging recent advances in modern B+-Tree techniques in a small transparent and memory resident portion of the structure. Structural properties sustain steady read performance, even on historical data, and yield efficient write patterns as well as reduced write-amplification.
We integrate MV-PBT in the WiredTiger key/value storage engine. MV-PBT offers an up to 2x increased steady throughput in comparison to LSM-Trees and several orders of magnitude in comparison to B+-Trees in a YCSB workload. Moreover, MV-PBT exhibits robust time-travel query performance and outperforms LSM-Trees by 20% and B-Trees by an order of magnitude
Preliminary results of classifying otosclerosis and disarticulation using a convolutional neural network trained with simulated wideband acoustic immittance data
Current noninvasive methods of clinical practice often do not identify the causes of conductive hearing loss due to pathologic changes in the middle ear with sufficient certainty. Wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) measurement is noninvasive, inexpensive and objective. It is very sensitive to pathologic changes in the middle ear and therefore promising for diagnosis. However, evaluation of the data is difficult because of large interindividual variations. Machine learning methods like Convolutional neural networks (CNN) which might be able to deal with this overlaying pattern require a large amount of labeled measurement data for training and validation. This is difficult to provide given the low prevalence of many middle-ear pathologies. Therefore, this study proposes an approach in which the WAI training data of the CNN are simulated with a finite-element ear model and the Monte-Carlo method. With this approach, virtual populations of normal, otosclerotic, and disarticulated ears were generated, consistent with the averaged data of measured populations and well representing the qualitative characteristics of individuals. The CNN trained with the virtual data achieved for otosclerosis an AUC of 91.1 %, a sensitivity of 85.7 %, and a specificity of 85.2 %. For disarticulation, an AUC of 99.5 %, sensitivity of 100 %, and specificity of 93.1 % was achieved. Furthermore, it was estimated that specificity could potentially be increased to about 99 % in both pathological cases if stapes reflex threshold measurements were used to confirm the diagnosis. Thus, the procedures’ performance is comparable to classifiers from other studies trained with real measurement data, and therefore the procedure offers great potential for the diagnosis of rare pathologies or early-stages pathologies. The clinical potential of these preliminary results remains to be evaluated on more measurement data and additional pathologies

Doch wie können entsprechende Maßnahmen zielgerichtet und unternehmensspezifisch ausgewählt, nach ihrer Wirksamkeit priorisiert und dann auch umgesetzt werden? Im Rahmen des S-TEC Zentrums für Klimaneutrale Produktion und Ganzheitliche Bilanzierung (ZKP) wurde hierzu ein Tool zur Identifikation und Priorisierung von Treibhausgasreduktionsmaßnahmen in den Themenbereichen Energieeffizienz und Substitution fossiler Energieträger entwickelt

Die Nachverfolgbarkeit von Objekten über deren gesamten Lebenszyklus hinweg, ist eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die effiziente Steuerung zirkulärer Wertschöpfung. Damit diese Nachverfolgbarkeit auch in komplexen und dynamischen Wertschöpfungsketten mit konsistenten Daten gewährleistet werden kann, ist eine durchgängige und eindeutige Identifikation von Objekten erforderlich. Dieser Beitrag stellt die Herausforderungen einer solchen Identifikation dar und Lösungsansätze vor.The traceability of objects throughout their entire life cycle is an important prerequisite for the efficient management of circular value creation. Investigating drivers’ awareness of pedestrians using virtual reality towards modeling the impact of external factors
Situational awareness of the driving environment is crucial for making safe and informed driving decisions. It can be deteriorated by distractions or environmental properties such as low light. In order to study and model the effects of environmental, perceptual, and behavioral features within the binocular field of view on the drivers’ awareness of pedestrians, an experimental setup consisting of a Virtual Reality (VR) based driving simulator, data generation, and analysis solution has been developed. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the developed setup and analyze drivers’ awareness of pedestrians in the context of varying external conditions. Results show that driver awareness can be measured from the properties of eye tracking and a secondary detection task to detect pedestrians. It is demonstrated how this research aims towards developing more human-aware driver monitoring systems with assistive functionalities such as attention guidance, taking perceptual and cognitive factors into account
Automatisierung von Kabelverteilern (Teil 3) : Aktive Änderung der Netztopologie und Trennstelle
Um die Spannungsbandgrenzen in Niederspannungsnetzen (NS) einzuhalten, führen Verteilnetzbetreiber (VNB) verschiedene Maßnahmen durch. Aufgrund von stark fluktuierender Einspeisung stehen VNB vor neuen Herausforderungen, was dir Rückspeisung des Überangebots an elektrischer Energie in die Mittelspannungsebene (MS) angeht. Im Projekt „Demo-rONT-Alternative“ wurden mehrere Prototypen für fernsteuerbare Kabelverteiler zur aktiven Anpassung der Netztopologie bzw. Trennstellen im NS-Netz entwickelt. Dieser Lösungsansatz wurde realisiert, um den Überschuss elektrischer Energie lokal in benachbarten NS-Netzen zu verbrauchen
FoPraNet-BW: an infrastructure for clinical studies in practice-based research networks in the German health system
General practice-based research networks have become an integral tool to gain medical knowledge from primary care in many countries. For this purpose, a scalable IT-infrastructure is presented considering the limiting peculiarities in the German health system and enabling GPs to participate in clinical studies based on their patient population. The infrastructure consists of a central study management server and local clients for each practice. It adopts to the currently limited digital connectivity of GP practices, data protection regulations for clinical data and the needs of the medical staff to manage a clinical study. The infrastructure is in production at the four university hospitals in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Until now three clinical studies with over 70 GPs and 350 Participants are successfully conducted or have been finished. Further clinical studies are in the planning stages
