Oral History of Tu Ngoc Tran
Mrs. Tran Ngoc Tu was born in Saigon, Vietnam on June 6, 1954. Tu completed her education in Vietnam and graduated from high school in 1972. Afterward, she worked as a textile worker in a factory. Tu was the third person from her family who escaped Vietnam, leaving behind her parents and three younger sisters. Both depressing and miraculous events occurred within the week she was at sea. Tu reached a refugee camp in Indonesia called Pulau Cucu in 1980. A month later, she was transferred to another camp named Pulau Galang. The following year, she was chosen to resettle to San Francisco, California. After a short stint at a paper company in Connecticut, she settled down in Garden Grove, California. For 35 years, Tu worked at a fabric manufacturing company in which she went from being an employee to the supervisor. As of 2018, Tu is now retired and lives with her husband and two sons in Garden Grove.
In her interview, Tu discussed her journey at sea, the people that she encountered, and her experience at the two refugee camps. Some significant events that she talked about were her reunion with her siblings, her employment history, and her attempts to sponsor the rest of her family from Vietnam to the U.S.Recorded digitall
