Oral History for Lam Thanh Nguyen
An oral history with Mr. Lam Nguyen, born on November 3, 1951 in Hue, Vietnam. He grew up in Vietnam with 11 other siblings: 7 brothers and 5 sisters. His parents were very poor, so it was difficult to take care of 12 kids. He went to school up until college where he attended a university in Hue for 2 years. Unfortunately, he had to quit school and enlist into the Army because of the Vietnam War. He was an officer in the Air Force in Da Nang, and his father was a lieutenant colonel in Vietnam. After the collapse of Da Nang on March 29, 1975, he was arrested by the Vietnamese communist and put into re-education camp for one year. He was released in 1976. He discusses his memories of South Vietnam before 1975, his experiences in re-education camp, and his experiences in the refugee camps. He also discusses how he left Vietnam and his experiences when he first arrived in America in 1988. After coming to the United States, he worked in a clothing factory called Silvery Factory. He currently works with electronics. He has four children--two boys and two girls. He also has two grandchildren. He currently lives with his wife and two daughters in Montclair, California.Recorded Digitall

An oral history with Ms. Sally Tran, born on July 24, 1977 in Saigon, Vietnam. Following the end of the Vietnam War, she and her family escaped by boat to Indonesia while she was only 4 years old. She discusses her memories of Indonesia and how her family was sponsored by a church to go to America in 1984. After immigrating to the United States, she spent years in school, eventually leading her to beauty school to become a hair dresser. She is currently working as a hair dresser in Chino Hills and frequently goes back to Vietnam to do her charity work for an organization she started called US2Vietnam. At the age of 37, Ms. Sally Tran is living with her partner of 12 years and her 3 dogs at their home in Eastvale, California.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Ha Vu
An oral history with Ms. Ha Thi Vu, born on October 18, 1960 in Kien Hoa, Vietnam. She lived in Kien Hoa, Can Tho, and spent summer months in Saigon. After the war ended, she continued her education, majoring in English in Vietnam. She discussed her memories of Vietnam before and after the war, how education changed and how it affected her family’s lifestyle and business. Her family left by boat in three separate groups from 1977 to 1978 and ended up at the refugee camps in Pulau Bidong, Malaysia. Her boat along with as her parents' boats were robbed by Thai pirates, which was discussed in detail. Her family spent roughly six months at the refugee camps before finally receiving sponsorship from her older brother and sister to come to the United States. Her family arrived in Los Angeles and settled in Alhambra, California at the end of 1979 right after Christmas. After saving enough money, they settled in Temple City, California. In the following years, she began attending East Los Angeles College, majoring in accounting. During that time, she was also taking adult English as Second Language (ESL) classes and received an offer from her instructor as a part-time Instructor Aide to teach English. After two years of studying, she completed her degree in accounting around 1983 and was offered a full-time position as an Assistant Teacher for the ESL class at the Mountain View School District in El Monte, where she worked until she retired in 2015. She married in 1987, has three children, and currently resides in Temple City, California. In the interview, she discusses her return to Vietnam in 2002 for the first time to visit her in-laws. She discusses her feelings about revisiting her old homes and business, as well as the other times she returned to Vietnam in 2008 and 2014.Recorded Digitall

An oral history with Mr. Nghi Moc Chau, who was born in May 17, 1956. He grew up in a farming village in Bac Lieu province and is of Chinese heritage. He left Vietnam in 1979 as a boat refugee to Malaysia. He spent two years in refugee camp before being sponsored to America in 1981 where he settled in Long Beach. He discusses keeping Vietnamese traditions, the differences in generations, and his appreciation for America. An oral history with Mrs. Thúy Anh Nguyễn, born in Sài Gòn, South Vietnam. She is currently a radio host, well-known M.C., and entertainer in the Vietnamese community. She left her family in Vietnam and married her husband, Vũ, in America. They used to live in Florida, but because of their shared passion and love for culture, they moved to California to achieve their dreams of being entertainers in the Vietnamese community, despite it not granting them financial stability. She wants her son to choose a good career that can help others and for him to be successful in his dreams.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Cuong C. Tran
An oral history with Cuong C. Tran, born in 1960 in Saigon, Vietnam. He is a Chinese-ethnic born in Vietnam who was forced to escape Saigon at the age of 17. Cuong describes, in detail, his journey as a boat person and his experience with assimilating into a new country at a young age. He also discusses the obstacles he had to face in gaining citizenship while struggling to make a living for himself and his family. After coming to the United States, Cuong married his wife and had two children who are currently in college. He lives in West Covina, California with his wife and ends the oral history with advice to the 2nd generation Vietnamese and Chinese Americans on appreciation and tradition.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Nam Quan T. Nguyen
This is an oral history of Nam Quan Nguyen, born in 1974 in Qui Nhon, Vietnam. Although Nam Quan was only a child during the Vietnam War, the war greatly affected him. He left Vietnam in 1994 with his immediate family to the United States through the Humanitarian Operation to start a new life at the age of 20. He discusses his experience and his struggles with assimilating into a new society and how he feels about the Vietnamese community in Orange County and Vietnam. He majored in Computer Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. His current occupation is in real estate as a broker. He currently lives in Midway, California with his wife and daughter.Recorded Digitall
