Non stop revolution! Las Nuevas Tecnologías aplicadas a la Arqueología

    Get PDF

This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced PDF of an article accepted for publication in Aquatic Botany following peer review. The version of record (Fernández-Pascual, E. (2016). Comparative seed germination traits in bog and fen mire wetlands. Aquatic Botany, 130, 21-26) is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.aquabot.2016.01.001Mires are continental wetlands of high scientific and conservation interest. Understanding the seed germination traits of mire species is essential for comprehending their regeneration ecology and conducting active restoration policies. Here, a comparative study of seed germination traits was performed with 34 plant species from bog and fen communities, including many of the European indicators of these habitats. Freshly collected seeds were exposed to a laboratory germination experiment designed to characterize their response to (1) cold stratification and (2) simulated field temperatures. Germination strategy groups were interpreted according to these responses, and the relation between these groups and different mire types was discussed. Seeds of all tested species had physiological dormancy. Most of them showed conditional type 2 non-deep physiological dormancy: fresh seeds could germinate only at warm temperature, but attained the ability to germinate at colder temperature as they lost dormancy. Most mire species from bogs, poor fens and base-rich fens followed a warm germination strategy analogous to that of other wetland species. Species from this warm group responded to very warm temperatures which rarely occur in the field, and this was interpreted as a gap-detecting mechanism. In contrast, species from calcareous springs and flushes had a cold germination strategy, which would fit with the cold and stable soils where they occur. Finally, a group of species associated with the pioneer Rhynchosporion vegetation of bare peat areas have very low germination, suggesting an intermediate or deep seed dormancy and a long term seed bank.Seed collection was partly supported by the LIFE+ programme of the European Commission (project LIFE 11/NAT/ES/707 - TREMEDAL). I had the financial support of the Government of Asturias and the FP7 – Marie Curie - COFUND programme of the European Commission (Grant ‘Clarín’ ACA14-19). DNA efficiently contributes to detect and understand marine invasions. In 2014 the potential biological pollutant pygmy mussel (Xenostrobus securis)was observed for the first time in the Avilés estuary (Asturias, Bay of Biscay). The goal of this study was to assess the stage of invasion, based on demographic and genetic (DNA Barcoding) characteristics, and to develop a molecular tool for surveying the species in environmental DNA. A total of 130 individuals were analysed for the DNA Barcode cytochrome oxidase I gene in order to determine genetic diversity, population structure, expansion trends, and to inferring introduction hits. Reproductionwas evidenced by bimodal size distributions of 1597 mussels. High population genetic variation and genetically distinct clades might suggest multiple introductions from several source populations. Finally, species-specific primers were developed within the DNA barcode for PCR amplification from water samples in order to enabling rapid detection of the species in initial expansion stages

    Get PDF
MAIN OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to recognise the importance of the nursing care of terminal outpatients being treated at home. METHODOLOGY: Information has been obtained from several official WebPages, magazines and related database during a six-month period (December 2015 to May 2016). ARGUMENTATION: Palliative care are aimed at terminally ill patients in order to improve their quality of life and that of their families. These should be applied progressively as the disease advances. The nursing staff provides integral attention to them and orients the families in the actions to be taken so that the last days of these people can be good and their needs can be met while also being cognizant of the expense this would mean for the hospital and the social security system. One of the main conflicts that arise in the home is the family claudication, which is avoided by providing suitable care to the family. CONCLUSIONS: It goes without saying that, most patients all over the world would opt for spending their last days at their homes, surrounded by their beloved ones. It is more human and natural than being in a hospital.OBJETIVO: Conocer la importancia de los cuidados de enfermería al paciente terminal en el domicilio.

Objectives: Describe the correct conservation, storage and elimination of drugs, as well as the legislation regardingmanagement of medicines collected from other patients. Get to know the attitudes and beliefs of professionals in a Health Center regarding medicines collected from patients in the query. Method: A bibliographic revision has been made using different data bases (Pubmed, Uptodate, Cochrane library and Fisterra) also Google search engine. And it has been done an observational, descriptive, transversal Study in El Llano’s Health Center in order to get to know the management of drugs collected from other patients in Primary Care consultations. Results: Medicines must be stowed in places that allow to have optimum conditions of temperature, light, hygiene and security, all this is needed for an adequate conservation. That is why Spanish legislation in force does not allow the use of medicines returned by patients as all of these conditions are not guaranteed. Spanish legislation establishes that is necessary to have controlled strategies to do away with medicines, creating the Integrated System of Management and Collection of packets. The Study shows that 41.4% of professionals do not know the legislative frame for management of medicines collected from patients and that 82.4% states that they have collected, sometimes, medicines at their consultations. Conclusions: After the observed results, we consider that it is necessary to spread out the legal aspects related to this topic and to raise awareness in professionals about the conservation of medicines, as it is a key point for the security of patients.

Structural Basis for Phospholyase Activity of a Class III Transaminase Homologue

Pyridoxal-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes catalyse a re- markable diversity of chemical reactions in nature. A1RDF1 from Arthrobacter aurescens TC1 is a fold type I, PLP-dependent enzyme in the class III transaminase (TA) subgroup. Despite sharing 28% sequence identity with its closest structural ho- mologues, including b-alanine:pyruvate and g-aminobutyra- te:a-ketoglutarate TAs, A1RDF1 displayed no TA activity. Activi- ty screening revealed that the enzyme possesses phospholyase (E.C. 4.2.3.2) activity towards O-phosphoethanolamine (PEtN), an activity described previously for vertebrate enzymes such as human AGXT2L1, enzymes for which no structure has yet been reported. In order to shed light on the distinctive features of PLP-dependent phospholyases, structures of A1RDF1 in com- plex with PLP (internal aldimine) and PLP·PEtN (external aldi- mine) were determined, revealing the basis of substrate bind- ing and the structural factors that distinguish the enzyme from class III homologues that display TA activity.A.C. thanks the Principado de Asturias for his postdoctoral fellowship Clarín

    Get PDF

3D technology applied to quantification studies of pottery: Eve 2.0

    No full text
In archaeological excavations, pottery fragments are the most common remains. As a consequence, it seems appropriate to propose a methodology that can help in their study. Therefore, we intend to propose a method that will alow us to identify from a fragment of pottery, the size of the vessel it came from, basing on partially completed pieces. This approach is not new, since between the 1980s and 1990s, C. Orton, P. Tyers and A. Vince started discussing about the estimated vessel equivalent (EVE). However, despite its advantages, it is a system which is not fully implemented . On this basis, we have designed a reviewed EVE, adapted to the new technologies (3D) that allow us to go further and talk of EVE 2.0.Investigación subvencionada por el Gobierno del Principado de Asturias a través del Programa “Severo Ochoa” de Ayudas Predoctorales para la investigación y docencia del Principado de Asturias
