Electrochemical genoassays on gold-coated magnetic nanoparticles to quantify genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food and feed as GMO percentage
The integration of nanomaterials in the field of (bio)sensors has allowed developing
strategies with improved analytical performance. In this work, ultrasmall core-shell
Fe3O4@Au magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were used as the platform for the
immobilization of event-specific Roundup Ready (RR) soybean and taxon-specific
DNA sequences. Firstly, monodisperse Fe3O4 MNPs were synthesized by thermal decomposition and subsequently coated with a gold shell through reduction of Au(III)
precursor on the surface of the MNPs in the presence of an organic capping agent. This
nanosupport exhibited high colloidal stability, average particle size of 10.2±1.3 nm, and
spherical shape. The covalent immobilization of ssDNA probe onto the Au shell of the
Fe3O4@Au MNPs was achieved through, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) created
from mixtures of alkane thiols (6-mercapto-1-hexanol and mercaptohexanoic acid). The
influence of the thiols ratio on the electrochemical performance of the resulting
electrochemical genoassays was studied, and remarkably, the best analytical
performance was achieved for a pure mercaptohexanoic acid SAM. Two quantification
assays were designed; one targeting an RR sequence and a second targeting a reference
soybean gene, both with a sandwich format for hybridization, signaling probes labelled
with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), enzymatic amplification and
chronoamperometric detection at screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE). The
magnetogenoassays exhibited linear ranges from 0.1 to 10.0 nM and from 0.1 to 5.0 nM
with similar detection limits of 0.02 nM and 0.05 nM for the event-specific (RR) and
the taxon-specific (lectin) targets, respectively. The usefulness of the approach was
demonstrated by its application to detect genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in
feed and food.Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA

Focusing aptamer selection on the glycan structure of Prostate-Specific Antigen: toward more specific detection of prostate cancer
The development of chemical sensors capable of detecting the specific glycosylation patterns of proteins offers a powerful mean for the early detection of cancer. Unfortunately, this strategy is scarcely explored because receptors recognizing the glycans linked to proteins are challenging to discover. In this work, we describe a simple method for directing the selection of aptamers toward the glycan structure of the glycoproteins, with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a model target. Using this strategy, we identified one aptamer (PSA-1) that binds the glycan moiety of PSA with reasonable affinity (a dissociation constant of 177 ± 65 nM). Interestingly, an electrochemical sensor with a sandwich format employing the identified aptamer as a signaling receptor, provides a tool of discriminating human PSA from the unglycosylated protein, with a limit of detection of 0.66 ng/mL. The sensor responds to different levels of PSA in serum, correlating well with chemiluminescence ELISA used in hospitals even with higher potential to discriminate clinically meaningful prostate cancer. Although validation on a larger cohort is needed, this is the first demonstration of an aptamer-based sensor to detect PSA by focusing in its glycan moiety.Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA

Análisis estadísticos para determinar el grado de estandarización y las unidades de medida en la producción cerámica
Through different samples of pottery from European archaeological sites with disparate cultures
and chronologies, this research tries to outline a methodology to determine the standardisation degree of
these samples and to discover the measurement systems used in the production process. The morphometric
characterization of each fragment, allows us to create different groups with clustering analysis. The
principal component analysis provided information that led us to a deeper understanding of the obtained
groups. The coefficient of variation brought us to the standardisation degree of the productions. Once all
these data are known, we can approach the possible units of measure that governed the analysed production
systems.

Archaeometric analysis of Asturian pottery in XVI-XVII centuries
We offer in this paper the results of the first archaeometric analysis performed on pottery productions elaborate in Asturias (Spain) between the early sixteenth century and the mid-seventeenth century. 10 samples were selected from the most representative types of Asturian potteries from this period. The samples were analyzed using different characterization techniques: X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), for elementary quantification of the components of the different samples and Glow Discharge Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (GD-ToFMS) to meet qualitatively of minor elements present. The supplied data will allow us to characterize and learn about productions that were made in Asturias in the late Middle Ages from a physical-chemical view.

Support Vector Machines to Accelerate Reflectarray Analysis and Optimization
The analysis of reflectarray antennas is substantially accelerated by using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to model the matrix of reflection coefficients in substitution of a full-wave analysis based on local periodicity, the Method of Moments (MoM-LP) in this work. The SVM model takes as input variables two geometrical variables which control the phase-shift for two different polarizations. Thus, the employed model is able to analyze shaped-beam dual-linear polarized reflectarrays. As test case, a shaped-beam reflectarray radiating a pattern for Local Multipoint Distribution Service applications, presenting a squared-cosecant cut in elevation and sectored-beam in azimuth, is presented, showing a high degree of agreement in both the copolar and crosspolar patterns between the simulations of SVM and MoM-LP. Furthermore, the acceleration with regard to the MoM-LP is between three and four orders of magnitude, which demonstrates the suitability of the SVM model approach for reflectarray direct optimization. This work was supported in part by the European Space Agency (ESA) under contract ESTEC/AO/1-7064/12/NL/MH; by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (Spanish Government), under projects TEC2014-54005-P (MIRIIEM) and TEC2016-75103-C2-1-R (MYRADA); by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias / FEDER under project GRUPIN14-114; and by the Gobierno del Principado de Asturias through Programa "Clarín" de Ayudas Postdoctorales / Marie Curie-Cofund under project ACA17-0912th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP
