Selection of Anti-gluten DNA Aptamers in a Deep Eutectic Solvent
Herein, we show the feasibility of using deep eutectic solvents as a faster way of selecting aptamers targeting poorly water-soluble species. This unexplored concept is illustrated for gluten proteins. In this way, aptamer-based gluten detection can be performed directly in the extraction media with improved detectability. We envision deep implications for applications not only in food safety control but also in biomedicine.Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA
Acceleration of Gradient-Based Algorithms for Array Antenna Synthesis with Far Field or Near Field Constraints
This work presents a technique for the acceleration of gradient-based algorithms that employ finite differences in the calculation of the gradient for the optimization of array antennas. It is based on differential contributions, which takes advantage of the fact that when an array is optimized, each element is analyzed independently from the rest. Thus, the computation of the gradient of the cost function, which is typically the most time consuming operation of the algorithm, can be accelerated. A time cost study is presented and the technique is implemented, as an example, in the generalized Intersection Approach algorithm for array optimization in near and far fields. Several syntheses are performed to assess the improvement of this technique. In the far field, it is compared for periodic and aperiodic arrays using different approaches for the computation of the gradient, including the analytic derivative. A reflectarray is also optimized in the near field with the goal of improving its quiet zone. The technique of differential contributions shows important reductions in the time per iteration in all three syntheses, specially in that of aperiodic arrays and near field optimization, where the time saved in the evaluation of the gradient is greater than 99%.This work was supported in part by the European Space Agency (ESA) under contract ESTEC/AO/1-7064/12/NL/MH; by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades under project TEC2017-86619-R (ARTEINE), and through Programa "Clarín" de Ayudas Postdoctorales / Marie Curie-Cofund under project ACA17-09
Uniaxial stress flips the quantization axis of a quantum dot for integrated quantum photonics
The selection rules of optical transitions in epitaxial quantum dots are determined to a large extent by the orientation of their quantization axis, which is usually parallel to the growth direction. This configuration is well suited for single-photon sources embedded in vertically
emitting devices, but not ideal for planar photonic circuits because of the poorly controlled orientation of the transition dipoles in the growth plane. Here we show that, for relatively large and initially unstrained GaAs dots, the quantization axis can be flipped to lie in the growth plane
via moderate in-plane uniaxial stress. By using piezoelectric strain-actuators featuring strainamplification we study the evolution of the selection rules and excitonic fine-structure in a previously unexplored regime, in which quantum confinement can be seen as a perturbation
compared to strain in determining the symmetry-properties of the system. The experimental and computational results suggest that uniaxial stress – already employed for enhancing the performance of integrated electronic circuits – may be the right strategy to obtain quantum-light
sources with ideally oriented transition dipoles and enhanced oscillator strengths for integrated quantum photonic circuits
Modular three-phase ac-dc LED driver based on summing the light output of each phase
This work proposes the driving of high power Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) luminaires in three phase power grids using each phase to drive an independent LED load. The driving is done by means of a boost converter in charge of controlling the current across its LED load. Moreover, each boost converter needs to achieve Power Factor Correction (PFC) to comply with IEC 61000-3-2 Class C requirements. Hence, achieving unity Power Factor (PF) and low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Taking advantage of the light properties, the output of the LED driver will be the sum of the light of each of the phases. Therefore, a theoretical study will be carried out to observe the feasibility of removing the electrolytic capacitor while guaranteeing a flicker free behaviour of the LED luminaire, even if the current of each string is pulsating at twice the mains frequency. In order to validate the study, a prototype has been built comprised of three PFC boost converters disposing of their electrolytic capacitors. The designed prototype operates in the full range of the European three-phase line voltage, which varies between 380 V and 420 V, and it supplies an output light of 42.000 lm at a maximum power of 300 W while achieving an electrical efficiency of 97.5%.This work wassupported in part by the Spanish Government under Project aforementioned regulation, is based on a modular approach, MINECO-17-DPI2016-75760-R, in part by the Principality of Asturias under Severo Ochoa grant BP14-142, Project FC-15-GRUPIN14-143 and Project SVPA-17-RIS3-4, and in part by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant

Optimization procedure of source/sink converters for DC power distribution nano-grids
DC-Power Distribution Systems require DC-DC converters to interface all their elements. These converters should provide a high power quality and be efficient, compact and inexpensive. Furthermore, the characteristics of the loads and sources connected to these converters are not known beforehand and may change widely (there is no regulation about the DC loads, such as IEC61000-3-2 in AC grids). As a consequence, the design procedure is neither standard nor obvious. This work proposes an optimized design procedure for any Bus Provider in a DC-Power Distribution System. It is based on models, hence extensible to different Bus-Provider topologies, and takes into account the main issues in DC-Power Distribution Systems, especially the design conditions imposed by the wide variety of loads, or even sources, which may be connected to the output bus. Experimental results obtained from three designs show a close match with the analytical models and verify that the proposed procedure minimizes converter losses and complies with the requirements.
